geeesh, I remember when this stuff would drive me bonkers. Would you believe it if I told you that, I never really attended math class while in High school and in Junior high I went to class but paid no attention. Here I am years later viewing this on youtube and it's seems so easy. I found the love of math by.......having patience and taking it really slow. and you need to know your multiplication table as well. Good luck to those struggling...I feel your pain.

she has same CD for both fraction when you have the same common denominator for both fraction just add the two numbers on the top and then reduce the number divide the 7 by 5 which you get 1 and a reminder of 2 and the denominator is 5= 1.2/5 +12 = 13 2/5

If your are wondering how she got 1 2/5 is by thinking like this: 5 times 1 plus 2 = 7 as in 7/5. Just bring down the 5.

You didn't explain how you changed the improper fraction to a mixed number.

7/5 - 5 goes into 7 once so you put a 1 and it has 2 remainder so you put the 2 over  the same denominator (which in the problem is 5) so your answer is 1 2/5.

@LAREDOTX23 She is saying that you need to add the fractions first so when you add them, you only add the numerator and the denominator stays the same no matter what... unless you have two different denominators.. that's a whole different thing... anyway, when you add the numerators you go and add the whole numbers after (Which are 4 & 8 in this equation) when you are done and you get an improper fraction, not saying you will just saying IF, you simplify it! @LAREDOTX23 I'll tell you....Look when you have to write the answer in lowest term you have to simplify it further......12 7/5 = 13 2/5 in this way:

Multiply 12 with 5 which equals to 60 and then add 7 to it which makes it 67 over 5 (67/5) and then divide it with 5....now the answer is 13 and remainder is 2...you can even write it as 13 2/5 which now is the correct answer.....LOL

So, another example, if you had lets say...9 over 8, that is "improper" because the top # is greater then the bottom #. so, 8 does go into 9 and that is 1 time. so the remainder is 1 and so 1 goes on the top of the new fraction while you keep that 8 on the bottom.

The easiest way to get a mixed number, is simply this. she put 7 over 5 right ? so how many times does 5 go into 7 ? (any time you see a fraction sign-it means divide!) sooo , 5 does not go into 7 evenly, but it does goe in one time and then you have two left over. since you have two left over, that 2 or whatever number in the future, put that left over number on the top of the fraction! always keep the denominator the same. in this case it is a 5.
