"holes in the bottles and my lungs hurt" refers to the canadian pastime of bottle tokes...also known as BT's or bots or bing banging a couple woohoos!!!
This is like one of those sneaky explicit pop songs you heard a lot in the `90s. The song`s music itself is so joyful and euphoric, you usually miss the references to smoking crack.
What a lovely neighborhood...And everyone is passed out face down on the floor and Sarah seems to be the only one without a hangover?..She must be able to hold her liquir...Look at her roll her eyes at all the drunkin magots on the floor...
reminds me of my brother's basement apartment years and years ago, mostly cause our lungs hurt from all the stuff we smoked, my head hurt from all the drinks, and the fact it was a basement apartment............just makes me think of that time in life, we had some great bashes there
First apt I got was a basement apt.She really has a good voice.A girl I used to chill with used to blast this, every now than I listen to it to remember her.Don't tell the wife
I've seen her in concert. She is a great musician. She played drums for one of her opening acts, and she also played songs she had written which are not on her CD's.
I love this song!! Amazing singer and talent!! If you love to discover amazing new unique talent, take a listen to Brittany Kwasnik and her 2 songs on you tube, THIS THING and BREATHE. She is only 15 and is songwriter, guitarist and singer. She is really really great!! If you love her too, rate her 2 songs, post comments and subscribe to her music videos. I love great music and great talents! :)
I first saw this song the first time MuchMusic played it, 3:30 AM, after watching TV all night underground... my lungs hurt and the furnace wasn't warming me up... I was a jaded 27-year-old warehouser with a BA and it almost made me cry.
I was riding with my girlfriend in the car and this was on the radio. My girlfriend was singing along and doing a pretty good job until I heard her sing "there's holes in all the bottoms of my long skirts." I almost went off the road from laughing. She seriously thought that was the line. I had to replay it a couple times before she would agree she had it wrong.
@olearyp@olearyp That's really funny because when this song was new that's how my buddy was singing it and I was like what?! He sung it the exact same way.
@olearyp maybe she never did bottle tokes? the line makes perfect sense and is easy to pick up for me, but she never did that then maybe she just hears it differently, pretty funny tho
@olearyp LOL... I had to listen to it a few times, but I can see how she heard that... so funny. I was in the car with my boyfriend and my little brother years ago and Pearl Jam's Glorified G and they both sang "Goodbye Virgin and the Pelican"... I kid you not. I have never laughed that hard... and I couldn't convince them either. They were mortally embarrassed when they finally got it...
@lokismistress That's ok, up until a few years ago, Mike McCready thought Kiss's "I wanna Rock n Roll" went "I wanna rock n roll all night, and part of every day". Ed told the story on stage once and the crowd laughed like you wouldn't believe
Dear Sean - I loved being in your basement with you even though I had to take a subway and a bus to get to it. I think I hurt you and confused you but I was 19 and isnt that what 19 year olds do? Thanks for playing dirty BINGO with me and teaching me that the small things matter most in this life.
I agree. Sometimes simplicity makes for a good video. Why clutter it? You make videos so the music and the song is presented to the viewers. That's what's important...not the video itself. You have to look at it as a whole.
Saw Sarah and band opening for Bruce Cockburn in Chico Ca a little while back. The sweetest sound. Bought the cd and she has become one of my favorite female artist. Right up there with Joni, Bonnie, Stevie and Anita..followed closely by everyone else.
Bought CD at BB in 2001."New Artist to Watch" 7.99. CD called "YOU WERE HERE"-1 of 10 grt CDs ever. Pilgramiged(?)to L'pool and seen the Stones & Bruce x times. Live in A'ville, NC. Venue called the Grey Eagle. One day I randomly noticed in weekly hip "City Paper" that SARAH HARMER was playing next evening. Took family, saw best solo acoustic show. Other comp would be PSimon, JPrine, JBrowne, etc. Song "Weakened State" Rocks.
does anyone remember the artist who made a video where she drove down a desert road in a red convertible with the cops chasing her and a panda stuffed animal in the back seat? I thought it was sarah harmer, but its driving me nuts...
Thanks - it actually was Tara Maclean, "if I Fall" - however, My Favourite Game by Cardigans is very similar and just as great a video..thanks everyone.
AFAIK, she is from just outside Burlington but went to school in Kingston (Queen's University). She was in a band called Weeping Tile while at Queen's.
Because the music industry and radio stations are filled with guys that can read ratings charts and sales charts, but don't have a rock and roll bone in their body. I got a chance to interview at the biggest rock station in the country this year and the head of sales used to sell carpet.
Canadians got it all...the hockey, the beer, the land, the music, especially Sarah--what the hell am I doing here? Thanks for responding to my comment!
LOl, no prob;) And indeed, specially after your listing of all canadians good, I ask myself the same question - what am I still doing here (Brazil)?? LOL. Take care;) - C
And she wrote in waaaay back in her early Weeping Tile days. Ever heard the version on the eePee EP? This version's much better, though. One of the best videos I've seen in the past few years. I used to live in a basement apartment and the song nailed the feeling.
