Great song and you're a great singer, but my own (worthless, ill-considered) opinion is that this is a mismatch between you and the song. When you sing a song you really sell it, because your whole thing as a singer is to be warm and passionate. But McCartney sang it almost with indifference, very cool and reserved. In fact now, he can't sing it anymore (his version of it on the Anthology video is awful). This is a bleak song about failed lives. It should be chilling. That's what I think anyway.
