I agree with most of the stuff they were saying, but the comment about making people write better songs seems to lack freedom of choice. I get what John is saying, but at the same time, he has to realise not everyone's into politics. At the same time, I can see where maybe he just wants to open their minds, and that's perfectly commendable.
@corkscrewfoley I don't think John was suggesting anyone get forced into writing anything... he was merely voicing his wish that there be more intelligent lyrics in pop music. We're all bourgeois now.
The best gig I ever went to was McCarthy at The Old Trout in Windsor. Malcolm announced that they were going to play a song about the bloke next door...Charles Windsor. I asked him afterwards where he got his Vox guitar from, he said he stole it.
'The i've lost my girlfriend' bit where he says pop is saying nothing, is so similar to Richey Edwards interviews - he saw this and no doubt took the same view!!
I discovered them tanks to their excellent "NME C86" title called "celestial city" back in 1986.
I said to Tim Gane after a Stereolab show in 1997 that "celestial city" was the most emotional song I heard in my life...

It's crazy that this is one of the only McCarthy interviews on the web. It would be nice to find more.
