Dude back in these days i had an afro & wore blue jean levi jackets with my collar popped while i rocked out ta dis wit my sony walkman. I had moves like Roth back then. LOL
This is the REAL VAN HALEN (Eddie, Michael, Alex and Diamond Dave). The current lineup is a SHAM (it's not really VH without Michael's kick ass bass and harmony vocals, I feel sorry for Wolfgang who is basically a prop). The flaming gong had been done before by John Bonham and Roger Waters but Alex Van Halen was a psycho with the gong at the end as Eddie rocked out the power chords. This was how you finished a show.
I couldn't agree more. Don't you just get hooked on backup singing and pounding bass lines? Mike has always been the deciding factor on VH. The Campbell Soup of the entree.
@Hunkola I am one out of two teens in my county that loves van halen. Im dating the other. No shit we got together because i gave her a ride home and she turned icecream man on on her ipod. "What are you doing later" I havent meet anyone else my age period that likes the music we like :(
@nicklove2011 --- Sounds like Van Halen kicked both your asses into love! Seriously though ---- we need the younger generation to dig Roth-era VH just like us old timers did back in the 80's. You gotta carry on the VH torch! And dont be saying you like that Van Hagar shit ---- GOTTA BE DAVE OR THE GRAVE !!!
@dal3fan88 --- Keep playing the old-school Roth-era Van Halen, bro---- let it flow through your soul like whiskey and gasoline ---- you will always feel the magic if you do that !!
I first saw Van Halen on the 'Women and Children First' tour and although it was a great show, quite frankly, the experience was dissapointing ONLY because our seats sucked. Went again a year later and saw them on this tour and were seated about 40 rows back on the main floor between center stage and Eddie. They opened with 'On Fire' and yes, it was 'Epic!' I'm one of the lucky ones to have witnessed them at the peak of their powers. I'm 47 years old but watching this...I'm 17 again.
Don't want to read all comments! Just want to say thanks for this video! You can't imagine how often I listened at this on a recorded VHS in my teenage years! Almost all guitar players I know were trying to play like VH, and all the others were too lazy and were playing cheap metal music!
Just have 2 questions: is it possible to buy this video? And from what show this footage is from?
@DigiPal why don't you try to just download it from youtube. RealPlayerDownload will work. And just in case you're asking about buying the whole concert, you can't. There exist only three videos from this show, but they're all on youtube.
When this was broadcast in 1982, VH was my favorite band, but I had never seen them play live. Imagine not knowing how your favorite band acted in real life, how they moved, or how they played live. When I saw this song and "So This Is Love" from the same TV show, the affect it had on me was staggering. I taped the show, and studied every frame because it was my only live evidence of the band at its greatest point. I am glad that we can relive this video. It brings back tons of memories.
@DanteCubit3000 If I have seen this in 81 I would have lost my mind . There was nt much Van Halen on T.V. in England back then & most people had no Idea who they were so funny to think that now but it s true .....ROCK ON ED & THE GANG !!! pitty they can t do it anymore .I saw them at the Staples Center In 2006 & they sucked pretty much I guess there backing trax Bass/B.vox got outta sync ..why they were using that I have no idea..I would nt pay to see em again Very sad....
The first concert I ever saw...Van Halen in 1980. I was 14 years old. Totally rocked. Ed Van Halen did not disappoint. D L Roth was the creator of the F-Bomb...Every other word...F...F...F..F....LOL. Saw them again in 1981. The drum kit in this video is identical to the one I saw that same year. Great band... Their albums do not do them justice. 10 times better, live, than in the studio. Hopefully, I will never forget.
@sandiego5150 Beethoven as well, i am pretty sure Eddie cites Ludwig Van as an influence to the same degree, I might be wrong but i am certain he likes Beethoven to a very large degree!
Van Halen in their peak no doubt about it they shined when they weren't too drunk or too high to play...And Sammy Hagar did bring EVH to a different level. Some say backwards I say forward...DLR ego ruined EVH it's apparent in Diver Down. To many cover tunes on that one.
Uh no...Look what they've accomplished with Hagar. Did you watch the 2007 tour? Don't tell me it's the same band. They need to get rid of Roth and that kid Wolfie and bring back Sam and Mike for the real Van Halen. Van Halen with Roth was from 1978 to 1984. Anything with Roth after this is a crock of shit. Face the fact...only Sam and Mike can save the name VH.
Just watching this video somehow reminds me of the scent of hot buttered popcorn. =)) Its music from when attending concerts was like going to the movies!
This has always been the "brown sound" to me ... It sounds like the raw wood of the instrument ... It sounds like crispy, crackling, bark being chopped by an axe ...
@JgHaverty It's called the "Unchained" guitar, this is the only known video of him using it. I believe he only used it for this song, he kept it in drop "d" tuning so it was ready for this song!!
This is the performance called "The Holy Grail" by big Van Halen Fans. Asked by the band some years ago why the whole show wasn`t released, the answer was most of the tunes didn`t come out "to par" but a few, such as this and "hear about it later" and one other we deemed good enough. This is a killer performance. This was when Van Halen ruled the world and they knew it. You came, you got your ass kicked and begged for more, exactly how a Van Halen show is supposed to be.
@Pat9201 true, but Dave says they did infact tape the whole show, but only wound up releasing these three songs because Eddie wasn't happy with the rest. I guess we'll never know.
@wimpyliberalbuster32 there are times when i have thought this band would have been far better off if mike made more of the PR moves,i bet if there was an entire show of this it would have been released long ago.
@Pat9201 I don't, I think Ed is weird enough that he found some little thing about the performance that he wasn't satisfied with, and that was enough for him not to release it.
@wimpyliberalbuster32 well either way you cut it the one thing van halen sucks at is PR.check out the web page, the thing hasnt been touched in a year and a half...lol
@wimpyliberalbuster32 i mean, come on guys...there has to be a ton of cool clips and odds and ends to put on there...even have a section for the solo dave years, van hagar years or whatever..alittle something for everyone but they do absolutley nothing...lol.
David Lee Roth... "Diamond" ... Like a little kid, Dave was constantly into one thing and then on to another. Spandex, boas and loud colors,Karate,Rock'n'Roll,Heavy Metal,Jungle studs,Drugs,Alcohol,Great bod,Humor,Keepin' the Ladies horny. He one true "Rock Star"
@eugvh18 --- Sir Diamond Lee Roth could make the ladies' panties soaking wet......and put chest hair on all the dudes.......that was the magic of classic Van Halen
David Lee Roth... What David Lee Roth ever lacked in vocal range but has a trade mark scream , he more than made up for with an authoritative delivery. Roth was all about confidence.
@Kickstart25 funny,i was thinking the same thing about the pop laced solo roth era that the rothies tend to forget about when blasting the van hagar era.
Funny that you're thinking about Roth while you're playing Van Hagar, period!! Haha
Try not to blowout your speakers while you're "blasting" Love Walks In.. When It's Love.. Why Can't This Be Love.. Can't Stop Lovin' You.. Not Enough.. etc..
@Kickstart25 actually i love roth era just the same but eddie is the man.there were plenty of songs from the hagar era besides those like good enough,AFU naturally wired, judgement day and on and on.my focus really isnt on the singer anyways.
what ever happen to this kind of rock music no tattoos no anger just good ole time rock and roll man I miss this kind of music those days are long gone forever people ,rock is dead
I saw them play at Seland arena in Fresno Ca. around 81'. This is just as I remember the days, of course.... my girlfriend did'nt like me watching all the young ladies tops come off and thrown on the stage from the first row.... but, what can I say.... I saw it anyway. lol
This was the pinnacle of rock 'n roll genius ----- Eddie slammin' away on his axe.......Mikey slammin' away on his bass.......Alex slammin' away on his drums.......Dave slammin' away on a hot chick's pussy after the show
@6spock5 not all of Anthony's bass lines are overtly simplistic. Also, his stronger than average backing vocals provided a better (for this band in particular) contribution as opposed to merely have an additional soloist (on the bass) in the band.
@miditek Don't get me wrong, I love Van Halen. Truthfully, I wouldn't change a thing they did (except 'Diver Down'! Oh yeah, and Three. Ugh!) And you are right about Anthony harmonizing well with the other guys. It wouldn't have been VH without those distinctive backing vocals.
@6spock5 Dude! Diver Down Rocks! Hang em High, Full Bug, Little guitars, CATHEDRAL! i know there were alot of covers, but you mean to tell me Pretty woman, dancing in the streets, and where have all the good times gon were t killer tracks?
@maxeypad y do people call it van hagar? its not like any of the 2 van halen brothers left the group, or both. so y call it van hagar? never understood it.
btw, hagar is good, but roth is better. hagar sounds better in chickenfoot, but his VH days are respectable
@golyg That gas station attendant is Michael Anthony. If Van Halen didn't want a bass player that wouldn't draw any attention away from 'the Brothers and Roth' he probably would've BEEN a gas station attendant! His bass lines are so simple that I could play 'em!! =)
In this era eddie was just on fire. I put him in the same league as Coltrane or any other artist who absolutely pushed the envelope. His parts are so left field. It is just amazing. And Diamond Dave is a complete legend too
I agree, it was before people started trying to rip him off and before anybody "caught up with him", as some of the media and "experts" put it. Nobody has ever nor ever will catch up with him in terms of pure FEEL for his instrument and the way he conveys what he wants his guitar to say to his listener.
Yeah, I saw the 1984 tour and they opened with Unchained. The stage was dark and then Eddie layed into the riffs, the lights came on and Dave did a huge split off 3 tiers of speakers and at that point I just lost my fucking mind!!
They changed the game for that time. I was 14 when they came out, and everyone was blown away. They did what Zepplin did for their time. If Van Halen hadnt been around, things would have taken alot longer to get heavier in America. You can try and argue that point, but unless you lived it, you would'nt know! ROCK THE FUCK ON !!
@06ruiz Van Halen had the same impact that Nirvana had. They pushed the restart button. Many a band either conformed or disbanded. Ozzy,QR,Motley,Ratt,Dokken,Warrant,BonJovi,GunsnRoses,Skid Row,Poison,White Lion, to Metallica,Slayer(kerryking cites VH as #1 influence),Anthrax,Megadeath,to stev lukather playing VH style solos in hit songs throughout the 80's(Dirty Laundry,Sunglasses at night). Even New Wave had a certain flare that could only come from VH. Holly,Beatles,Zeppelin,Halen,Nirvana.
They changed the game for that time. I was 14 when they came out, and everyone was blown away. They did what Zepplin did for their time. If Van Halen hadnt been around, things would have taken alot longer to get heavier in America. Yopu can try and argue that point, but unless you lived it, you would'nt know! ROCK THE FUCK ON !!
As someone who lived this era back in 1981 as far as american heavy metal goes...this was it. so fuck all monday morning quarterback bullshit...k ? in 1981 and in america this was heavy metal. no 20-20 hindsight. metal in 81 is not metal in 2010............
@ziggy577 wow you saw them in 79 !!! i bow down to you bro !! my mom wouldnt let me go to shows as a kid until 1982. judas priest screaming for vengence tour was my first concert. and an epic one at that !!

@eugvh18 --- Sir Diamond Lee Roth could make the ladies' panties soaking wet......and put chest hair on all the dudes.......that was the magic of classic Van Halen

@Hunkola and make the kids scream for more...
eugvh18 10 months ago
David Lee Roth... What David Lee Roth ever lacked in vocal range but has a trade mark scream , he more than made up for with an authoritative delivery. Roth was all about confidence.
eugvh18 10 months ago
@eugvh18 ---- Diamond Roth had enough attitude and swagger for 100 rock stars.......that's what made VH spectacular back in the day

I love coming back to this video to cleanse away the pop ballad Van Hagar horse shit smell !!!
NOTHING kicks ass harder than the classic Roth era of VH !!!
Kickstart25 11 months ago 3
@Kickstart25 funny,i was thinking the same thing about the pop laced solo roth era that the rothies tend to forget about when blasting the van hagar era.
Pat9201 8 months ago
@Pat9201
Funny that you're thinking about Roth while you're playing Van Hagar, period!! Haha
Try not to blowout your speakers while you're "blasting" Love Walks In.. When It's Love.. Why Can't This Be Love.. Can't Stop Lovin' You.. Not Enough.. etc..
Kickstart25 8 months ago
@Kickstart25 actually i love roth era just the same but eddie is the man.there were plenty of songs from the hagar era besides those like good enough,AFU naturally wired, judgement day and on and on.my focus really isnt on the singer anyways.

These HQ versions of Oakland 1981 are great! This was the BEST Van Halen tour I ever saw. I was 19 at the time. Great memories!

Can you imagine all the concerts of the early yrs in HD Dolby sound on a home theater!!
Carloscda40 1 year ago
@6spock5 not all of Anthony's bass lines are overtly simplistic. Also, his stronger than average backing vocals provided a better (for this band in particular) contribution as opposed to merely have an additional soloist (on the bass) in the band.
miditek 1 year ago
@miditek Don't get me wrong, I love Van Halen. Truthfully, I wouldn't change a thing they did (except 'Diver Down'! Oh yeah, and Three. Ugh!) And you are right about Anthony harmonizing well with the other guys. It wouldn't have been VH without those distinctive backing vocals.
6spock5 1 year ago
@6spock5 Dude! Diver Down Rocks! Hang em High, Full Bug, Little guitars, CATHEDRAL! i know there were alot of covers, but you mean to tell me Pretty woman, dancing in the streets, and where have all the good times gon were t killer tracks?

People went totally ape-shit when the mighty Roth Halen roared onstage ---- that's just how they kicked ass in those days

Van Halen fucking ruled!
and not Van Hagar....
maxeypad 1 year ago
@maxeypad y do people call it van hagar? its not like any of the 2 van halen brothers left the group, or both. so y call it van hagar? never understood it.
btw, hagar is good, but roth is better. hagar sounds better in chickenfoot, but his VH days are respectable

Why is there a gas station attendant on stage playing bass?
golyg 1 year ago
@golyg That gas station attendant is Michael Anthony. If Van Halen didn't want a bass player that wouldn't draw any attention away from 'the Brothers and Roth' he probably would've BEEN a gas station attendant! His bass lines are so simple that I could play 'em!! =)

lingojaimes 1 year ago 10
In this era eddie was just on fire. I put him in the same league as Coltrane or any other artist who absolutely pushed the envelope. His parts are so left field. It is just amazing. And Diamond Dave is a complete legend too
therizla666 1 year ago 2
@therizla666
I agree, it was before people started trying to rip him off and before anybody "caught up with him", as some of the media and "experts" put it. Nobody has ever nor ever will catch up with him in terms of pure FEEL for his instrument and the way he conveys what he wants his guitar to say to his listener.

this is probably the greatest live performance in history , yes i do think its that great!!!
downincognito76 1 year ago
Yeah, I saw the 1984 tour and they opened with Unchained. The stage was dark and then Eddie layed into the riffs, the lights came on and Dave did a huge split off 3 tiers of speakers and at that point I just lost my fucking mind!!

They changed the game for that time. I was 14 when they came out, and everyone was blown away. They did what Zepplin did for their time. If Van Halen hadnt been around, things would have taken alot longer to get heavier in America. You can try and argue that point, but unless you lived it, you would'nt know! ROCK THE FUCK ON !!
06ruiz 1 year ago
