The guitar work on the original was what made that song great. Not the vocals. Everyone rememembers the picking and plucking but does not remember what that song was about. the lyrics are irrelevant for this song.

I disagree. I've heard some pretty awful live stuff from VM. Consider this: Petty has never released a bad record. VM has more than a few. In fact he hasn't done anything that's moved me since wavelength, and believe me, i've listened to a lot of them. Not to mention that VM is considered to be one of the biggest assholes pre-Axl Rose. Petty is exactly the opposite. But if you like him better, that's your call.
Hum...Zero, old boy, what kind of fans does Petty have anyway.? Jump on here to listen to VM's song and then condemn Van becuz 1 fan said he thought VM did a better job with his own song. Wavelength was the last pop album VM did which must be your thing. VM is transcendental.
TP doesn't seem to give a shit about VMs so called attitude. He sure covers lots of his songs. Ur attitude is not so generous or kind urself. Check urself out for a change!
God I love this song! Tom & The Heartbreakers are just so amazing!! Just seeing his face & hearing his voice brings me such comfort. Anybody have an idea when they will tour again?
bought the runnin down a dream dvd. Brilliant! nobody else like them. Found it so inspirational and this song even he didnt wrote it, he has made it his.

Who would believe Petty would play this song written by an 18 year old Van Morrison when he was with Them. Van played it harmonica based but has never performed it again since he grew up as far as i know. What a song to have been written by a boy so young.

I checked online the lyrics for Mystic Eyes by Them, and they are not the same lyrics (not even close) as this song of Tom Petty's. Are you sure this is a Van Morrison song?
The music is unmistakably Mystic Eyes by Them. the lyrics in the original were just thrown in during recording, but start out "One sunday morning we were walking by the old graveyard". check Toms version at Grand Rapids & see he opens with those words, here he ad libs all the words.
Thanks!! Great tune and great recording, but for some reason it does not do it justice. I saw them do this live two years ago and it was the best song of the show. I doubt we will get a chance to see them do this one again, but it is much much better in person.
Tom is really screwing up this spontaneously ad libbed song written and played with an eerie harmonica intro by a nineteen year old Van Morrison when he was with Them. Why do these old guys like to sing "Young Morrison". Van himself matured and moved on from his young boy songs years ago.
Petty's version of this song is seriously cool.
Shivers down my body every time I hear it.

I like Tom Petty, and the music was done really well, but Petty's vocals seem so weak when compared with Van Morrison's.

Yeah--and as much as I love Tom Petty, the Van Morrison/Them version is superior. It's got that 60's vibe to it that can never be duplicated.
