@Floodlezoot Actually he did plan to do the back story of Starwars years ago because m Mark Hamill said that Lucas had planned the prequels to be made 18 years from now at the time that interview was taken it was around 1983 so he wasn't that far off so people who say he only came up with the idea years later and made everything else up are talking crap he always wanted to do the backstory of Vader and the rest and so on he just couldn't back then.
@charlieiscool1000 I suspect that the idea of prequels came to him after (and based on) the success of the original 2 or 3. Maybe by the time he was making the third one, he was thinking of it. Possibly. I'd have to see the exact date of that Mark Hamill comment. You can really only date the idea of prequels to the date of the first mention of them. Anyone who says "Yeah, Lucas said way back that he was planning on prequels.", to them I say, "Show me the money!!!!"
There is allot of ungrateful gits around here. George Lucas changed Cinema. He created Pixar, he created ILM, he created Merchandising. He brought Digital film making to a whole new level. The man has done tremendous work for film making, and just because of a few Star Wars crazies moaning about the prequels people get on his case, get a grip.
Everyone says he made the prequels for money? That's not true at all! U just they they were different and didn't like them. If he made them for money, why on earth would he pay for everything, episode 3 was written, produced, directed, and payed fir by George lucas, if it was a flop, he would have lost millions!
@Devosimms The prequels are horrible, and you are in denial. I suggest you watch "Redlettermedia" reviews and get enlightened. It didn't flop on a financial level however; Lucas earned hundreds of millions from financing the prequels.
@Devosimms I'm sorry what? My ignorance? Please elaborate. There was nothing factually wrong in my statement except my opinion of the prequels quality which is entirely subjective. I think you're ignorant to the fact that you're just a pathetic 90's kid who only like the prequels because you were brought up with and cuz of the "awesome" lightsaber fights. The characterization is so messed up in the prequels, they are ripe with plot holes. Lucas has become a horrible director.
@Devosimms We don't dislike the prequals because they were different we dislike them because they forgot everything that made the original trilogy so special.
Slap a Star Wars logo on a toilet seat and it'll sell, it was never going to be a flop.
@whattheduck21 The prequels no....but Indy 4 was not as bad as people say. Ford was still in shape and got through the action scenes and had the character. The aliens were fine it was the 50's and sorta a hybrid idea.....the fridge everyone says is too silly but I thought it was just funny and did not analyze it to death. The prequels are different.....they just fell flat of what I thought or hoped they would be. :(
Anyone see this fat pig's newest revisions of the OT?? Jesus. How can anyone praise George Lucas or his now, POS films... after all of the shit he's done to them?
Then, how can you possibly trash an imaginative and artistic masterpiece like Avatar??
@LukeLovesRose Yes, because one cannot fathom a world where someone loves Star Wars (even with the continual changes of each rerelease) AND hates Avatar. I am not sure it's possible. It would be a paradox, I think. The world would surely implode and cease to exist. So, yeah, I see what you are saying.
I remember watching the VHS over and over and over this was always in the beginning. It's nice to be able to look back at the interview though. :D Thanks for the upload!!!
I love George Lucas and I am a HUGE fan of Star Wars. I have been since I was 7 years old when I first discovered my parents VHS tapes. Though...I have never seen George excited about anything. He always sounds exactly the same. heheh
@Weedianazareth the other projects were empire and return. He had written them as one big epic but took the first third because he said h would notget funding for all of it
He He. 2 million. Only 2 million of an 10 million dollar movie went into the special effects. The effects that revolutionized film making for decades was only 2 million dollars He He wow. HOW DID THEY DO THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
George Lucas' plan is to let those VHS tapes wear out over time, and make the re-releases the way the film is remembered. I'm backing up my tapes on DVD's.
FINALLY someone put this up on YT. I watched this hundreds of times when it came out and I was an obsessed fan...
Leonard Maltin is such a retard. A couple shots of him looked like they went back and filmed his questions later; he cannot act. And his beard is creepy.
It's ironic here that he is kissing Lucas's ass. Four years later when The Phantom Menace came out, he ripped the movie to pieces in his TV review. Another Hollywood faker.
It was always so hilarious for me. Ususally a child cant stand boring interviews. But when I was like six years old I was already a STAR WARS fanatic and I remember my father was the one who wanted to fast-forward to the movies.
Behold the man who destroyed his own legacy in his lifetime, I feel sorry for this guy. Now one thing is clear for me, starwars did not came from this guy's head. He had some basic ideas but he hired others who implemented and improve upon them since back then he had to report the studios. So basically this guy took credit of other people's work. We have witnessed what happens when this guy is in charge of something, nothing original comes out of his head, only cheese lines and deus ex machina.
s to make all three original s didn1t realy hae to report to the studios in any way, also he both directe and wrote IV nd had most real power over V and VI.
I remember when we bought this set back in '95 when I was just 5 years old. lol I would always fast forward through these interviews when I was little so I could just get to the movies! Now the set is just setting on my bookshelf with all my other Star Wars collectibles collecting dust. I really need to get me a new VHS player so I can watch them the way I used to. those where the good ol' days, when Han shot first lol. i'm glad they brought the original cuts to the latest DVD release as bonus.
@CalgarSkull George Lucas is a hack and he did not even direct Empire Strikes back. All the rest he's done is trying to emulate Irvin Keshner and he never lived up to that challenge. Also, Spielberg was MUCH more involved than George Lucas in Indiana Jones. george Lucas just wants to milk his cashcow at this point.
@Superphilipp It's living in the real world, buddy; the prequels tanked because George Lucas had precisely all the freedom you ca have in a film without anyone telling him when to stop being such a fat nerd; the only other thing he's done is American Graffiti. So i have every right to say the guy sticks to his one halfway successful movie series and never moved on, which is just embarassing at this point. he should grow up and make a costume drama in the 16th century.
@Regenmacher175 Yeah, I've seen Redlettermedia's review too. Very original analysis.
I hate the prequels as much as the next guy, but I just don't get how you can see Lucas this cynically. I don't see a disgruntled asshole who just wants to make as much money as possible; I see a moderately talented geek who wants to make movies with the bestest space battle ever and has forgotten how to tell a gripping story.
If he just wanted to cash in, why would he put so much personal effort into it now?
@Superphilipp because he knows there are many people, like you, who still have faith in him despte the overwhelming evidence to the contrary and he knows that they will think "he's gonna pull it out of the hat this time". If he cannot tell that story he should try to tell a different one. star wars is hopefully finished now and we can now look at other great film series from more talented directors. I am optimistic for Nolan's batman trilogy but you never know which is what Lucas is exploiting.
@Regenmacher175 I do not have faith in George Lucas nor the Star Wars franchise. I am just not prepared to call him an uncaring sell-out without good reason.
@Skull10 1995. When the orginal Star Wars was on video one last time. The covers were Darth Vader on IV, a Stormtrooper on V, and Yoda on VI. Each with their bodies blending in as a background for the first Death Star, the Hoth system, and the Emperor's throne room. Check out "Star Wars One Last Time" on You Tube.
I own his book Movie Guide 2012 Good Job

In this interview, no mention of Jar Jar Binks... But I thought he orginially concevied of Jar Jar Binks, and developed the storyline from there.
In seriousness, I find it so annoying when people pretend he originally had any concept of the prequels and some kind of trilogy of sequels.
That evolved later when they realized a lot of money would come in. Can't you cunts see that? Seriously...
