I know the trick for get his cleaning on alternate picking. He picks deeply into the strings, if you pick superficially there'll be differences between the attack of the notes and there'll be also a bigger chance of you miss. and of course the hours and hours of practicing
I really don't wanna be "that guy", cause I think PG is a beast and what not. BUT that's really not a great tip for holding the pick if you want clean, clear notes. He makes it work somehow, but if you look at a guy like Steve Vai for instance, or Tosin Adibi...errr w/e his name it. The thumb is bent BACK, not forward. Which basically makes the pick parrallel and causes notes to be clear and full, not thin and tinny. Just my 2 cents anyway, do what you like =).
@SmokeMonster87 sorry dude, but, the way Paul is doing it is the only way. Steve Vai is a legato player. He does not do a lot of alternate picking so the angle of the pick on the strings is not as critical for him to play fast. Also, the tone is much fuller when the pick strikes the string at a 45 degree angle as opposed to 0 degrees (paralle to the string).
@SmokeMonster87 Plainly put, He likes the sound when he picks like that, its most efficient for him, its how he likes it to sound, and it made him famous. thats the most important part of being any musician, create a sound you like, because thats what matters. So go ahead be "that guy" but id still rather take advice and lessons from him over you anyday.
@SmokeMonster87 Not really.Although Gilbert tends to have a tiny tone (Espcecially in the past) it's not because of the pick angle it's because he liked that tiny "aluminum" tone as i call it.This tone is horrible to people who don't play guitars but some guys including me find it addictive and terrifying as fuck.
@mhtsos12 He especially uses that tone for lessons because it's easier for the student to hear what he's doing, rather than using some overdriven zakk wylde tone.
well i dont think its enought to just practice this method. u need to add some music and you need to practice to play some music first, then when u can play songs good, you probably are ready to practice techniques like these.
He's a good teacher, he's giving excellent instruction here.
