Way to over-analyze a statement and come up completely wrong. Anyone who is not a leftist knows that to be black and Conservative or Republican is very hard because of the criticism and condemnation from the left. The reason why Colin Powell escapes most of that criticism is because he is an Establishment Republican. Est Repubs are only very slightly to the right of the Democrat Party and the Democrat party has been hijacked extremists.

Actually, a large number of them were deists..they weren't Christians, in fact one of the things Thomas Jefferson did was to rewrite the gospels and remove all the miracles of Jesus, the virgin birth, healing the blind etc.
The 'Jeffersonian Bible' consisted solely of the TEACHINGS of Christ, without any of the miracles..

@lunac666 The majority of our FF were Christian. Jefferson attended a Christian church his whole life and even organized Christian church services to be held in Congress on Sunday mornings. He didn't believe in the miracle of the Bible but he most certainly ascribed to the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Franklin dabbled with deism in his youth but said he repented. Franklin was a Presbyterian that quit attending church but he never stopped paying tithing until the day he died.

But then you probably don't attend any Christian church on a consistent basis like Jefferson did. You probably don't see the good (despite your Jeffersonian quote) in promoting Christianity, like Jefferson did.
Jefferson most likely didn't loathe evangelicals.

You're Jefferson quote, do you know the context? Was he saying in jest? Was he saying it in all honesty? Did he mean that for all Christians or all religions? To me it sounds in jest. I don't think it was an indictment of all of Christianity.

@HoldingOnToLiberty From my reading of Jefferson, he wasn't the playful man...he was quite serious and quite a thinker..he did after all along with Ben Franklin draft the Declaration of Independence.
Jefferson is of the most-influential revolutionary figures, alongside Patrick Henry and Ben Franklin, who were inspired by the writings of John Locke of the equality of mankind and the abolition of social classes and caste systems.
He and they invented the American Dream, Liberty, and Freedom.

@HoldingOnToLiberty Jefferson wrote that during the continental congress during the initial drafting of the Declaration, one member lobbied for the insertion of the phrase "under our Lord Jesus Christ" and the motion was overwhelmingly defeated...in Jefferson's words this was a true victory for freedom and tolerance and a clear sign that all members agreed that America isn't the safe dominion of a single religion but safe for "Jews and Gentiles, Christians, Buddhists and Mohammedans alike.."

Twice to be exact..
Once the use "endowed by his Creator" (this is where the 'Jesus' motion was made and rejected)
HIS Creator..not THE Creator..as in EVERYONE IS FREE TO HAVE THEIR OWN Creator..
And the second use is a reference to the "Laws of Nature and of Nature's God", clearly this is intentionally ambiguous too. The framers didn't create a Christian nation..

@lunac666 You've got me mistaken for someone else. I never said that our founders were trying to create a Christian nation. They created a secular nation where people were free to choose what they wanted to believe.
It is important to know that they didn't run away from Christianity either. The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 included a charter for public schools. The curriculum for these schools included the Bible with an emphasis on the New Testament.

It would only matter if the Founders were Christian if someone were trying to deduce or infer that Founders of America were Christians, ergo America is Christian in conception, or owes it's existence to Christianity..
If so, it is because Christian intolerance led to the USA.

@HoldingOnToLiberty Yes, for the most part, besides the occasions where they moved from one church to another or protested a specific pastor etc. EVERYONE, nearly EVERYONE in the US went to church WEEKLY..it was more a social expectation, as Washington once said that all men MUST go to church, if for no other reason than to be community-oriented..
There weren't alot of atheists in those days- it was kind of a social taboo if you didn't admit to believing in A GOD, if not Christ..
