Do you guys know how much harder it is to make an English voicebank than it is to make a Japanese one? Cut them some slack.
I read somewhere that it takes a few 4-hour days to record a Japanese one where it can take anything up to a month and beyond to get all of the English phoenemes and whatever else we have recorded. It's not perfect but they're working on it - there just isn't a lot of market incentive considering vocaloids are used more openly in Japan and Asia than in the Western world.
@StarsingClaw The thing is that barely effect the quality of the Vocaloid, because the language has almost no effect on quality. All Vocaloids are almost equally robotic and understandable. Granted the newer the Vocaloid the better quality they are, but it all depends on the user.
J-loids are just used by more professionals than Engloids.
Plus if someone can make Iku Acme sing, then any Vocaloid can be made to sing well.
English is hard, okay? It's very hard to speak and understand it when humans speak it, so when you make a Vocaloid who can sing perfect, flawless English, let me know.
I kinda like Sonika in this. It's gotta sweetness to it like pineapples. I dont hear a gumminess to it or a cotton-in-the-mouth whatever it is. She sounds pretty nice. The accent makes it a little cooler.

Stop saying that English Vocaloids suck cuz they don't. It's not like Japanese vocaloids are anymore understandable than the english ones. Some ppl think that the Japanese Vocaloids sound better which in some cases I agree but I find that their voices r too robotic which makes understanding hard to understand. @greengale2 There are some english singers much worse than this... ever heard Nirvana? Their songs are so unclear that Weird Al made a parody song about how no one could understand it. And they don't have to be unclear, but many people take that as the alternatives, which is 1) have painful autotune-esque twinges, or 2) spend hours editing each note individually.
I'm an English speaker and I swear I have a far better time understanding the Japanese Vocaloids than the English ones.
I really don't think they did a good job with Sonika. I know that no Vocaloids are perfect and they all have flaws and even the Japanese ones are hard to understand, but really, they could have done a lot better with her. When Luka speaks in English, at least you can understand about half of it and it doesn't sound like she has cotton in her mouth.

The main reason these vocaloids haven't done as well it generally because they didn't spend enough time on the character. All the Japanese ones have a personality given to them and only two English ones actually have original and professional art. Marketing basics...
i've been finding original songs sung by sonika but can't seem to find one. all i found is sonika singing songs of other japanese vocaloids in english. i guess this shows how creative japanese users are compared to us english freaks xD

I don't know about the 20yr. old vegas hotel singer, but I do agree that I really like her new design. Some people may say it looks trashy and not sweet, but I think Sonika's voice/ personality will shine. Her cover art is probably the prettiest of them all.
There's a bit of controversy but apparantly her design was picked before the end of the competition.

Ok now that that's out of the way, I think sonika has potential but from the other songs I've heard of her she's very difficult to use. This song sounds good but in all her other songs she sounds like she's singing with her teeth clenched.
If you follow that logic you basically get Leon. Not to mention there are A LOT of problems with what you suggest.
Creating a male vocaloid is very hard and the fact that PowerFX is trying to make a Manly Vocaloid makes it even harder.
The reason BIG Al was pushed back so much was because they are STILL working on his voice. To say that a company should abandoned something after 2 years of work is really insulting.
Big Al will be completed in 3 weeks and I can't wait to see how he sounds.
Sonika is actually supposed to be able to sing in any language. Instead of syllables, she sings in letters (consonants and vowels). Probably the closest thing to her is Luka who was made to be billingual (english and japanese) but she still had a heavy accent.
Her voice is very iffy to me. I mean...you can tell the Jap vocaloids are singing Japanese. This is the first English vocaloid and you can barely understand her. Tis a bit sad.
Um... this is the 6th English Vocaloid. Also you might want to listen how Sonika sounds when shes in the hands of a good producer such as Cityedge and Giusspe.
This is like, the fourth English Vocaloid. Before Sonika, there was Lola, Leon and Sweet Ann. There might be some more, but I'm too lazy to look them up right now.

I don't know about the 20yr. old vegas hotel singer, but I do agree that I really like her new design. Some people may say it looks trashy and not sweet, but I think Sonika's voice/ personality will shine. Her cover art is probably the prettiest of them all.

There's a bit of controversy but apparantly her design was picked before the end of the competition.

Ok now that that's out of the way, I think sonika has potential but from the other songs I've heard of her she's very difficult to use. This song sounds good but in all her other songs she sounds like she's singing with her teeth clenched.

If you follow that logic you basically get Leon. Not to mention there are A LOT of problems with what you suggest.
Creating a male vocaloid is very hard and the fact that PowerFX is trying to make a Manly Vocaloid makes it even harder.
The reason BIG Al was pushed back so much was because they are STILL working on his voice. To say that a company should abandoned something after 2 years of work is really insulting.
Big Al will be completed in 3 weeks and I can't wait to see how he sounds.

Sonika is actually supposed to be able to sing in any language. Instead of syllables, she sings in letters (consonants and vowels). Probably the closest thing to her is Luka who was made to be billingual (english and japanese) but she still had a heavy accent.

Yep! Luka was voiced by a Japanese songstress .. But she can sing in English aswell as Japanese.

Her voice is very iffy to me. I mean...you can tell the Jap vocaloids are singing Japanese. This is the first English vocaloid and you can barely understand her. Tis a bit sad.

This is like, the fourth English Vocaloid. Before Sonika, there was Lola, Leon and Sweet Ann. There might be some more, but I'm too lazy to look them up right now.
