0:45 - What's wrong with it? How about the fact that it is creepy as HELL, and I have no doubt it would kill me and eat my organs?!? Charles Manson looks cuddly compered to it.
Why does it creep me out? Because (and I think other people feel this way too,) it looks like a human, but has no actual personality. It has no soul, and it has no emotions. That is why it gives me the creeps.
I think the most likely answer to 'uncanny valley' is a mixture of violation of expectations and a defence mechanism for avoiding mentally or physically ill individuals.
The problem is is that we instinctively recognise the simulation as a living creature, and when it doesn't act like one, that recognition doesn't change, instead we instinctively assume they are seriously ill.
i agree with the death theory. the closer they get to the robots on the screen the creepier they get. i feel more comfortable with a far away shot of them in a similar way that i'd feel comfortable being farther away from a threat of some kind (like a rotting corpse or dangerous animal).
I really enjoyed this series. It was very informative and seems as though its references to social psychology (TMT) and neuroscience (mirror neurons) were really spot-on. I disagree with the comments that the speaker was dull. I thought he was quite capable.
I find the robot at 0:37 a work in progress. But my daughter will think aliens will pop out of the skin any moment. Even Santa Clause looks scary to her.
Fascinating subject made boring by the professorial lecture. I am a professor, and I teach linguistics which is very technical, but my students consistently rate me as making the material come alive. Come on, Karl. You should know by now that lecturing is not how to do this
I agree that he'd be a poor presentor in an academic context. However, here, appropriating the academic genre makes him seem intellectual, credible, rational
(in a space that is usually sensational, incredible...etc).
Anyone else cannot stop thinking about John Fowles and De Deukans' Mirabelle? ;)

I was waiting for the twist ending, that the narrator was a robot. He looks like one.

all of the robots are at the bottom of the valley..
if the valley proves their creepiness why are they still being made?!

It's not his fault you teach linguistics.

Robot 1: The way she was acting, she looked like she was gonna vomit.
Robot 2: She would only would seem strange if you didn't know she was a human.
