@hornedfrog5 Uhm, I'd have to say no on that one, it's more like 10-18, perhaps 20 mph. These big ships go faster than you believe. On the other hand, bad watchkeeping, a lot of traffic, and perhaps driving at night, can make it hard to spot another ship, even with the radar on, the radar is far from 100% accurate, and sometimes really unreliable, depending on situation. But yes, a good crew should keep from colliding with other ships =)

I have done some sailing delivering yachts where we have left the sight of land. because the wind was the wrong way we motored some days therefore we stuck the boat into autopilot and just sat around, reading books, playing cards, and keeping watch...

...you can see for miles and there is nothing around. now problems occur when a guy falls asleep on watch and wakes up to a thud...
