This is awesome! Can you please provide a tutorial on the toe rigging? I imagine there's some sort of procedural rigging going on there or did you manually keyframe their movement?
wow that's amazing!!! Must have taken heaps of time to model it! really really cool! I'm still on the basics and wondering how to create these shapes.. Good job anyway!
To all CG haters and those who love to dump on CG and CG artists, I say, try and do what we do first, model and animate that model, then criticize, but don't come here with your high and mighty attitude and try and take a dump on what we do, it's hard work, maybe not as much as older traditional artists but it's hard work.
@CerrunosStudio Agreed. It's easy to prefer modeling due to the real life textures that will never be achieved by CGI, but until stop-motion can reach the animation levels of CGI, which will probably never happen, or they actually build robots as big as ED-209 that can actually walk/run fluidly, CGI will always remain the best ARTISTIC tool for achieving this.
that model is insanely incredible. i actually think it looks better than the one in the movie. muzzle flashes need improved, but thats about it..Top notch job!
@Camaron47 well it was based off the model from the robocop movie. in the movie, the robot was very cumbersome and clunky, and it wasn't very stable either. if this model looks like its about to fall over then that makes it all the more realistic, since the model in the movie was very unstable since it was just a prototype.
@legendarywar1 True, but he's walking a fine line by not having any weight shift at all and thereby trying to stay true to the movie. If he were to put this on a demo reel, the person watching it would think the exact same thing, the difference being he wouldn't have a chance to explain himself.
Also, how do you know he was trying to model the animation off the movie? The animation in RoboCop was primitive stop motion, this is CG. He has an opportunity to make it better.
@Camaron47 well, although the animation in robocop may have been stop motion, it still portrayed a unit that was still most certainly a prototype. in essence, the movie version wasn't perfect because it was designed that way. it was an experiment. therefore it looked wobbly and unstable, which i think he tried to transpose over into this model here. i could be wrong though.
@legendarywar1 Again, look at his AT-ST walker as well. That also lacks weight shift, and the AT-ST walkers in Star Wars actually had pretty good animation.
I'm not trying to be snooty, but I just got done with the first 3 terms at Animation Mentor, which focus on body mechanics, and one of the things they emphasize A LOT is weight shift. So while I'm no master animator, I can generally pick out when it looks wrong, and this definitely looks wrong.
This is pretty boss. The textures may seem a bit flat, but thats because of lighting issues, not because it's a bad model.

The animation is solid, but you need to learn about weight shifts. The way he walks, he'd fall over in no time.

@Camaron47 well you're probably right. i have absolutely no animation experience, so i really have no idea what i'm talking about here.

@legendarywar1 It's all good :)

@legendarywar1 Also, if you watch his AT-ST walker, he doesn't have weight shift in that either. So in general he just needs to learn about weight.
