No, it's the original shareware version for MS-DOS. As far as I know, the music didn't work on most machines, that's why almost nobody remembers it. However, it works in DOSBox :)
In fact, SpuarePulse was the one who did this video. He didn't "simulate" an AWE32, he just captured the MIDI output with DOSBox and synthesized it with TiMidity.
I don't know why but everytime I use TiMidity's synthesizer and not the actual TiMidity program, it tends to chop up rather badly at times.. I'm guessing it's a sound buffer issue that and my laptop is like less than 1 GHz processor...
Speaking of capturing MIDI output, has anyone made a player compatible with the DRO that DosBOX generates? I like to record Descent 1's music in raw OPL3, but AdPlug can't play it back now.
Abuse is one of my favorite games for the pc. I still have my old copy of the game and it still plays well. I actually just started doing a game play of it not to long ago. Hard game but fun as hell!
Well, he was often responsible for both the music and the sound effects. Bobby said once that some death screams in DOOM was actually him yawning in the morning. I'm not sure if he was serious or not.
Most sound effects back in the day were just standard studio audio CD's or something weren't they? I mean half the games back then all shared the SAME explosion sound effects, even today.
That's funny though, I wonder which deathscreams, are you sure it's not the sounds of the mancubus? If you take the pain sound off the mancubus and speed it up by 50% and reverse it, it sounds like someone saying "Ow!".
Or maybe not reverse it, don't know. It's been awhile since I messed with the sounds.
yeah I heard the intro song in some of tatsurdcacocaco's playthroughs

Holy shit, I love you for putting this up. I got it too, and was surpriser over how fast you run, shoot and the enemies are.
But it seems like it is normal gameplay here :o

Is the music tracked? Or is it ADPCM? I wonder if anyone's ripped the music off this game, because it's awesome.
I only know of one MS-DOS game that used ADPCM music but it was mono, and that's the first Command & Conquer you did a video of.
gyiyg996 2 years ago
It uses MIDI, but you needed a Sound Blaster AWE32 or something to hear it.
CuteFloor 2 years ago
Ah.. That explains why it sounds so awesome, I guess you used TiMidity++ to simulate a AWE32? Or do you own a real AWE32?
Can Abuse use the GUS for music too?

You'd have to wonder why the hell they credit the guy who did the music as also the guy who did sound effects.. That's always confused me.
Bobby Prince was a awesome composer, I have alot of his .MID files on my harddisk, like the ones from Duke3D and others.
