Magic versus Science is a little explored realm, often ill defined. Piers Anthony of Split Infinity explored it, two parallel worlds one of magic and one of science in alternate universes, and a great scientist or great wizard may pass between them: The only real thing in common are the people, all other things are science or magic based upon the universe. Might & Magic allowed some technology with magic. In reality, we see compatibility problems as the illusion is incoherent.
@YamiPoyo I saw that, mixing technology and magic has been hard; because of the fantasy that requires a suspension of disbelief and a fantasy world being consistent, and to enter with "science" is a real problem because we break our disbelief with contradiction with our own world. Many professional fantasy and science fiction authors don't attempt explain the technology, but they do name it with some name, because upon any contradiction with reality they lose their audience.
@WOWJBEOWULF 7 different examples all good, Also Mass effect They find the mass relay which sends ships across space, and it advanced science, but also people developed seemingly magical powers too.
@YamiPoyo Thank you for your feedback. My youthful hobby was science fiction & fantasy, that I have since then put away, but we never forget the stories and lessons. In the end, it is just a story, and then we move forward.
@YamiPoyo I saw a mixture of science and magic in the Might & Magic series, but in the end, the authors decided to go with magic; because the science was an oddity. In the Ultima series, in one of the games, you were combating a computer that generated the monsters, that had to be defeated, as Ultima explained itself as being multi-dimensional across the planes of time & space; thus only the heroes crossed the boundaries even into the magic city that opened at midnight, where time doesn't pass.
@YamiPoyo The fantasy author Barbara Hambly mixes magic and science, she explains her universe creation as having a magic orbit, get close to the magic source then magic dominates, and get far away from the magic source then science becomes the reality: She did it for "Time of the Dark" of a cross dimensional wizard who would travel to the planes of science for safety from magic creatures of darkness that bred humans like cattle, and recruited a new wizard apprentice from our science plane.
@YamiPoyo Advance Dungeons & Dragons does technology crossovers, but they are always oddities and very limited; because you cannot recharge your laser pistol it is limited for the quest and then disappears from game play--this is only done to satisfy the technology urge of our environment, and always placed in a future starship environment, Buck Rogers finds Advance Dungeons & Dragons. This has been explained as either multi-dimensional plane interaction, or science does exist but unused.
@YamiPoyo The famous science fiction author Anne McCaffrey weaves magic into science, not science into magic: It is a universe science, and there are magic genes of genetic manipulation that have been bred out of Earth life or never entered; but upon discovering the starship stardrive came with genetic manipulation of our species, and magic was discovered: McCaffrey isn't known for hard science. The Dragonriders of Pern, the dragons are genetic creations of a lost Earth colony.
@YamiPoyo In the Chronicles of Riddick we see the old science fiction explanation of magic, that any technology sufficiently advanced, then the borders of magic and science disappear; in such an environment we see significant events, some science, but the technology is so advanced and prepackaged that humans and effects to alter the environment have merged, causing science to be decorated with art that appears magical--this is real life, the artist industry adapted science, and we see things.
@YamiPoyo In the game Sims 3, they expanded it to include adventures, and there are some magic artifacts, such as the magic gnomes that teleport around and watch television, among other watching things. These only open up for the hero that enters the hero quests, and the rewards are some expanded gameplay into some supernatural oddities in a world of science: The focus is science, careers include medical doctor, mad scientist, inventor, but flexible for the hero to adventure like Indiana Jones.
@ADRIANAIRE Ralph Bakshi made the film for children, but it has a little cursing and nazi propaganda in it. I don't intend to turn anyone away from the film, because it is one of my favorites, but the point of the movie was to be everything that disney animation was not.
Anyone thinks this inspired the anime movie "Fist of the North Star"? same kind of futuristic animated Sci-fi fantasy loaded with graphic violence set in a post-apocalyptic future where two brothers fight for supremecy as the good one must try to heal the world thing from mutants and radioation.
Eh sort of. I would say Wizards shows what happens after a long time has passed and how society has regressed back to the Dark Ages. It's quite similar to sci fi novels of course like Canticle of Leibowitz.
This story reminds me of the game Breath of Fire 3 actually if you've ever played it.
I'm SOME mutants wanted to be human again (just a thought), and I wish that happen - fairies, elves and dwarfs appearing for real in the distant future (not the nuclear war part)
Ehh, I thought the movie was okay, though the beginning was the best part. Some of Ralhps designs are cools, but almost half the time, there sloppy as well.
Not to mention the rotoscope technique he made, every time he uses it, I just want to pop the DVD or VCR out, cause I HATE the way he uses it. Heavy metal has done a better job of using the technique.
I agree, but have you seen Ghost in The Shell, The X-rated controversial Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend, Fist of the North Star, Perfect Blue, Nausicca, Princess Mononkoke, Golgo 13 The Professional etc.?
You can't really compare the two. It's like comparing heavy metal music like Sepultura with "chart topping" rock bands like Seether--it's not really the same category. That's why anime has its own section at video stores and stuff. The fantasy aspect of the two genres gives them a similar base to start from, but it goes in totally different directions from there on.
You seen those? but you gotta admit Wizards is similar to Fist of the North Star. Same graphically violent Sci-fi fantasy epic about two brothers in post-apocalyptic worlds as one of them wants to conquer it and one of them wants to heal even in a world of mutants and violence. Even the battle sequences are similar.
It's a theme in storytelling that pre-dates the Christian bible. It's the story of Cain and Abel, and before that it was a middle-Eastern tale. The bothers are usually metaphorical--one simply represents good, the other represents evil, and the characters in the story generally represent life being pulled between the two. The movie "Legend" is a great example of that, also.
This was a creepy ass but good movie

@WOWJBEOWULF Back in the 70's and 80's it was the fad fantasy story line.
Final fantasy's 2-7 were magic vs technology, some were magic being the victim some were technology being the victim.
