i always listen to "Like a G6" in this car... but no I'm thinking of buying this car 2006 GTP 3.9L v6, if anyone would like to post the fuel economy they get on this think id appreciate it!
Manuals have much better steering because they don't use the numb electric steering. They use a speed sensitive hydraulic assist. The road feel is MUCH better.
@creamyfilling102 From what I heard GM was making too many models and they couldn't afford it anymore. So one of the victims is unfortunately Pontiac. It's a damn shame! Pontiac is a EPIC car! However it is chance Pontiac MAY come back. Know one really knows for sure but I believe they'll be back. There is a saying "Legends never die"
i recently had the dishonor of riding in one of these....it sucked....ass...plastic fantastic...only thing i liked about it was it had some balls for a v6...but other then that...the interior sucked ....go back to the drawing board or just shut down GM ..fuckin suck.
I have the same V-6 motor in my malibu. I get over 30 on the Highway rolling to vegas and hve a heavy foot ans still get over 20mpg driving around in the city. The motor has a lil go in it but really how much HP do you need. Last time I checked cops give tickets if they catch you doing over 80. I wish I could get a turbo in one tho maybe even a twin then sneak up on a few cars.
I have an 06 G6 GTP 6speed manual and love it. Going from 2nd to 3rd is a little clunky. I put a cherry bomb vortex exhaut on it and took the resisinator out. The stock exhaust makes no sound at all.
I think a lot of people arguing about this car are thinking it is more than it really is. I have an 06 G6 GTP. The mileage isn't fantastic, the interior plastics are kinda cheap. But due to depreciation, I got a good deal. Its fun to drive(it may not have 300+ HP like Mustang or Camaro, but it's peppy), it looks half decent. I don't expect much of it, but it does the trick.
nice car, good value, and powerful, but why, WHY does gm always have center consoles that look like they belong in 80's cars, and use cheap plastic everywhere?not trying to insult anyone who owns a gm, but its just fact.

You're one of those typical people that looks only at horsepower per liter, as if they suggests what a good or bad engine is.
This engine revs to only 6000 rpm, makes maximum torque at 2800, needs regular fuel only, and gets 30 mpg on the highway.
It's an excellent engine. Try finding a European or Japanese engine with all those cards. There are a few exceptions, but they are few and far between.
@TheNewMrCool a jaguar XF can get 271hp and 440 ft-lbs of torque from a 3.0litre DIESEL V6. compare that to the 240hp and 241 ft-lbs of torque from the pontiac, and thats from a 3.9 litre PETROL V6. and being a diesel its guaranteed to get higher mpg than the pontiac, and the jag wont be ready for the scrapper after 5 years like the pontiac.
@dan19evans you forgot to mention the fact that that motor has 12 more valves and 3 more cams, and a DOHC configuration. The result is that mechanical efficiencies lost through the pushrods are eliminated. That, and diesel has a higher thermal efficiency than gas (petrol.) Of course it will put up better figures with all those advantages. Considering the Pontiac is a gas powered V6, 30 mpg is very impressive. I've yet to see a gas powered Jaguar do that.
@StickMechanic thats exactly my point about american cars. a single camshaft and 2 valves per cylinder? when will the americans actually learn something about making sports cars? and the reason i compared it to a diesel is to prove how little power the americans get out of an engine, when us british can get more power and more torque out of a diesel engine that is smaller than your petrol engine. and the only reason that engine gets good mpg is because of its pathetic 2 valves per cylinder...
@dan19evans, what i meant to do was suggest that you compare this motor to similarly sized, petrol powered six cylinder engines of v-type configuration from other vehicles. For the reasons stated before, it is very difficult to compare petrol and diesel.
@StickMechanic a lotus evora puts out 276hp and 24 lb-ft of torque. and thats from a 3.5 petrol V6. and the evora gets 32.5mpg. so, more power and more torque from a smaller engine, and gets better mpg....
@dan19evans the Evora is classified as a Sports car, and weighs significantly less than a G6, classified as a Large coupe/mid-sized sedan. If you were to put the Evora's Toyota derived V6 in a similarly sized car (i.e. a Toyota Camry or Solara) you'd see that 32.5 mpg drop to about 26 or 27, regardless of how many valves, cams, etc etc.
This car is difficult to compare to others, as there are so few else in this class that offer the same configurations. The Camry/Solara is the closest.
@dan19evans, this part you are correct, and I will not deny. but again, this particular motor is a derivative of Toyota's mid/full size line up of cars, and was tuned for the Evora. In its original form, and used in its intended vehicles, the engine still produces more horsepower and torque, (268 and 248 respectively,) but cannot provide the fuel economy that the 3.9 liter does. But what I am trying to point out is that this makes a better comparison than a sports car and a large coupe.
@dan19evans, the other thing that was never mentioned by TheNewMrCool was the fact that in 2007, the 3.9 litre OHV was replaced by a 3.6 litre DOHC V6 that produces 252 hp and 251 lb ft of torque. More recent variants of the same motor produce no less than 281 hp and 266 lb ft of torque. Tuned variants get 304 hp and 273 lb ft of torque.
@dan19evans, maybe so, but again, its a sports car. consider the fact that our 3.6 liter is going in full sized family sedans and producing that much power, while other six cylinder family sedans we produce have power outputs of 365 hp from a 3.5 liter.
@StickMechanic it doesnt matter what size car the engine is going into, it doesnt affect the power output of the engine. it will affect performance figures like its 0-60 times yes, but doesnt affect the power produced at the crank or the wheels
@dan19evans i apologize for the delay before. I was dressing a wound i suffered in class today.
I am aware that it doesn't matter the size of the car that its going into. It is simply the fact that these motors produce that much power, and wouldn't normally be seen in that particular type of vehicle.
I suppose its for that little niche that love hauling ass to baseball practice...
@StickMechanic another example of europeans getting more power from is the ferrari 360 - 400bhp. even metro made a V6 version which put out 380hp from a 3.0 litre V6.. and a more refined version of the engine with a couple of turbos put out nearly 550hp in the jaguar xj220....
@dan19evans correct me if I'm wrong, but i do believe the Ferrari 360 has a 3.6 liter 8 cylinder engine. Also, It is built in Italy. I will admit you have us with the Jaguar XJ220 (a personal favorite) but that was produced in such limited numbers. These vehicles I am using to make my point are vehicles that are commonplace on our roadways.
@StickMechanic point taken, forgot it was a V8. although the radical SR8LM puts out 455hp from a 2.8 (V8 i know, but only a 2.8), and its still naturally aspirated. put that engine in a super lightweight body and youve got yourself the current record for the nurburgring for production cars...
@dan19evans, LM, standing for LeMans I'm assuming. Any car in LM trim is going to have ungodly amounts of power, regardless of engine size. However I do believe that it is a Porsche that currently holds the record at the 'ring, with a sub-7 minute time. I have the records somewhere... though they may have changed since then.
@dan19evans either way, Mazda owns us all, with their 2.6 liter naturally aspirated rotary motor producing 700 hp... admittedly, this comment was off the wall, but i just felt like pointing that out...
@StickMechanic yes but if the mazda ur talking about is the 787b, it wasnt a road car. and yes cars have done sub 7 seconds laps round the ring, but theyre werent road legal production cars, like the radical sr8 or sr8lm
I'm impressed you knew what I was talking about. While you are right that it was not road legal, the fact that it merely exists proves that, while not entirely practical, It could be done. As for running the 'ring, no car has or ever will run the ring in 7 seconds. 7 minutes yes. As of 07 it was a Porsche that held the record @ the ring. It was a road legal vehicle, but not in America, due to safety restrictions. I believe second was a Lamborghini, and third was the Corvette Z06 (C6)
Still, would be interesting to see that... seven seconds to travel 13 miles... to pull it off, the car would have to travel at about 700 mph or so to pull it off.
Feel free to correct me, as I was doing this in my head.
@dan19evans, meh... it doesn't matter. Its safe to say that the G forces generated by acceleration would most likely kill the driver, so by the end of the first second, the next six wouldn't much matter.. -.-
@dan19evans diesel always gets more torque and milage, wtf is petrol and i know pontiacs that have 450,000km on them and they still look and feel new you fuck
the 3.8l's had alot of problems. and yes if you have one and you'll tell me you havn't had any. but you prolly have and want to prove a point. but if you dont you will.. The transmissions are famous i w-bodys for going. along with the engine catching on fire because the supercharger makes too much heat for the engine. along with the crank pully coming loose
I dont know why everyone bash's the g6. I own one. have a lifetime engine warrenty and also installed turbo in it, 425 horse power for my g6 gtp coupe. instead of 250. fuckin homo JUST believe euros the only way! GM will have a come back. believe that
this pretty much took over the Grand Am's place, still has its problems but i've never ridden in such a comfortable car its amazing and it hugs the road, when i drive this car i know im in control
I agree, it has an amazing 3.5L V6 but has a bunch of faults. such as faulty power steering, bad tranny's, faulty ignition, and their brake pads go out like none other. but i still love the car doesnt matter what problems it has, and i own one
um actually no its not my first car thank you i own 2 vehicles a 89' mustang gt and this car. sure its fast but thats not the main reason why i love it, i love it because how responsive it is, how comfortable it is, and how stylish it is
American Manufactures aren't trying to produce power, we are trying to provide more safety with how many car accidents there are these days, while Europeans are producing cars that provide more power and less safety, I think i'll stick with something that will save my life
please don't be stupid...... european cars aren't safe wtf...... VW, volvo, Saab just a few affordable cars cuz i won't include bmw and merc cuz its not fair to....
I bought this car over my 2005 cts I have a 2007 with the sport package. it is the same as the 2006 gtp. this is a much better car and willing to be pushed in the twisties lol. I am a former street racer and yes this is a car to be reconed with I am happy that I own one
I have a 2007 g6 gt + sport package the same as the 2006 GTP which is why I bought it. I can say this after a year of ownership. FAST FAST FAST but look out for the brakes they wear out fast too. I love mt 6 and don't look to replace it anytime soon. by the way I have the 6 speed manual transmission
yeah you know why you buy hondas, toyota's, and nissans? because their cheap boxy. i mean come on look at the Nissan Cube that was the worst thing Nissan ever built, and the Honda Clarity? sure its nice, but its only sold in southern california, so they made no money off of those, oh and how about the Honda Ridgeline worst Chevy Avalanche knock off. as far as for MPG Ford Fusion just took the imports off the charts for getting 45mpg at 750miles to a tank!
Actually, I own the Honda Odyssey, which costs around $40 000 and the Honda Accord, neither of which are boxy.
Gas is cheap, who the hell cares about gas mileage when my van gets over 30 mph? Only a scant few of gm's products have the mph of a ford fusion. Most of them are below 20 mph.
@adiosk8r91 I owned an 05, G6. I got about 16 city and 22 highway. The car has been good to me. So don't think I'm a hater. Here are my pros and cons. "Cons". Terrible mileage too much road noise. Rough ride at times. rough idle steering clunk "Pros" Reliable. Decent HP comfy seats that give a real sports car feel. decent rear leg room small things such as EX temp, Digital MPG ratio, and other dummy integration. Decent factory stereo. I traded mine in two weeks ago. Accord all the way.
@adiosk8r91 Hes just jelous he doesn't have a poniac lol. i got a 2006 grand prix gt and its so nice. I did the instant mpg going 65 with cruise and it was up to like 40 lol.

the 3.8l's had alot of problems. and yes if you have one and you'll tell me you havn't had any. but you prolly have and want to prove a point. but if you dont you will.. The transmissions are famous i w-bodys for going. along with the engine catching on fire because the supercharger makes too much heat for the engine. along with the crank pully coming loose

Decent car. The 3.9 is a good engine, but I'd prefer the DOHC 3.6. The 5800rpm redline here doesn't cut it for me.
ambientflier 2 years ago 2
YEP,, THAT 3.6 IS DOHC.

Well... this pisses me off. I buy my 2000 Grand Prix GTP for $6,000 and have to pay it off, but yet my girlfriend gets a 2008 G6 GTP for nothing!

I love the look of the car, I wish it is is as reliable as how well it looks though..
vernong1992 2 years ago
it is. they say Pontiac came out with it's greatest cars at the wrong time.
Turquoise66 2 years ago
no it is not. Take a look at consumer reports.
Zorrachus 2 years ago
what? they are saying this is Pontiac worse car?
Turquoise66 2 years ago
Yes, actually, and if Pontiac made quality cars, which don't exist, I might add, then I wonder why people buy a random car, especially a pontiac.
Zorrachus 2 years ago
this pretty much took over the Grand Am's place, still has its problems but i've never ridden in such a comfortable car its amazing and it hugs the road, when i drive this car i know im in control
adiosk8r91 2 years ago
I agree, it has an amazing 3.5L V6 but has a bunch of faults. such as faulty power steering, bad tranny's, faulty ignition, and their brake pads go out like none other. but i still love the car doesnt matter what problems it has, and i own one
adiosk8r91 2 years ago
why do you love the car then? Because its fast? Its your first car? what's the reason?
Zorrachus 2 years ago
um actually no its not my first car thank you i own 2 vehicles a 89' mustang gt and this car. sure its fast but thats not the main reason why i love it, i love it because how responsive it is, how comfortable it is, and how stylish it is
adiosk8r91 2 years ago
I love the new G6's great looking cars but why didn't they just name it the Grand AM they about look like one and are basically the same thing

american cars are so wasteful... 3.9 litre V6 with 0-60 in 7 sec? man europeans can do so much more with that kind of power.
popspie 3 years ago
Yes but many ignorant domestic fans will argue that point even though they cant get shit per litre.
Mikew995 3 years ago
UNDER 7 sec....LARGE coupe category. it weighs 3600lbs
justinl67 3 years ago 2
American Manufactures aren't trying to produce power, we are trying to provide more safety with how many car accidents there are these days, while Europeans are producing cars that provide more power and less safety, I think i'll stick with something that will save my life
adiosk8r91 3 years ago
That's just pure BS adiosk8r91, EuroNCAP crash tests are harder than the US standard crash tests

I bought this car over my 2005 cts I have a 2007 with the sport package. it is the same as the 2006 gtp. this is a much better car and willing to be pushed in the twisties lol. I am a former street racer and yes this is a car to be reconed with I am happy that I own one
doyle20eyes 3 years ago 7
I want that car! I think they look great, and I love the idea of a 6spd manual. I've seen as low as 14.4 in the 14th mile. They're quick.

the grand prix line was resurrected in the G8, but I'm hoping that the name "Grand Prix" was killed off so it can come back in a big splash.
ejouie 3 years ago
Grand Prix GTP is better.
ajl227 3 years ago
too bad that the end of the GP is near... I sure hope that GM is killing the GP just so that they can "resurrect" it.
ejouie 3 years ago
The GP already ended. It was resurrected as the G8.
ajl227 3 years ago
I have a 2007 g6 gt + sport package the same as the 2006 GTP which is why I bought it. I can say this after a year of ownership. FAST FAST FAST but look out for the brakes they wear out fast too. I love mt 6 and don't look to replace it anytime soon. by the way I have the 6 speed manual transmission
doyle20eyes 3 years ago
Very Reliable Car. only you need to watch out for the power steering and brake pads
adiosk8r91 3 years ago
Please don't lie. Every single pontiac model has failed in reliability. You don't buy pontiacs for reliability, you buy hondas, toyotas, and nissans.
Zorrachus 2 years ago
yeah you know why you buy hondas, toyota's, and nissans? because their cheap boxy. i mean come on look at the Nissan Cube that was the worst thing Nissan ever built, and the Honda Clarity? sure its nice, but its only sold in southern california, so they made no money off of those, oh and how about the Honda Ridgeline worst Chevy Avalanche knock off. as far as for MPG Ford Fusion just took the imports off the charts for getting 45mpg at 750miles to a tank!
adiosk8r91 2 years ago
Actually, I own the Honda Odyssey, which costs around $40 000 and the Honda Accord, neither of which are boxy.
Gas is cheap, who the hell cares about gas mileage when my van gets over 30 mph? Only a scant few of gm's products have the mph of a ford fusion. Most of them are below 20 mph.
Zorrachus 2 years ago
dude are you fucking kidding me?!? i get fucking 33 mpg on the highway in my G6 dont say they get 20mpg if you dont own one
adiosk8r91 2 years ago 22
I said most, I did not say all.
BTW, if you buy any GMC product now (2009) in midst of their uncertain future, then you have a screw loose.
