@strawberries404 You've got a point. Dot could certainly tap. But there's an artist we rarely hear about these days, unless the Schomburg Library in New York has rare footage of Jenny Legon, who's career years take place about the same era as the Nicholas Brothers.
Seen in the context of the entire clip, this is really once of the greatest bits of big-bandery every caught on film. The first few minutes (which aren't presented here, but which can be found elsewhere on YouTube) are really a straight "white" version of Chatanooga Choo-Choo. This clip is really a wild whacked-out comment on what had come immediately before. Seen as one piece, the whole thing is amazing -- sort of an extended play version of one of the greatest big band tunes of all time.
Who's singing for Dorothy! I saw the Harlem dancing girls on TV back in the 70s. They said that in SHOW BOAT a white girl sang for Dorothy. One of the Andrews sisters they said was a great mime! She could sing Black!
@dorothyjeandandridgeI Thought I may have confused Dandridge Sis with Andrews Sis. But I was sleeping on the couch in the 1970s. Woke up to A SHOW BOAT documentary. A fat matronly White Lady sang a course of CANT HELP LOVIN THAT MAN OF MINE. ("BLACK") style. I, went, WOW, that was the most Beautiful thing. That must have been an aged ANDREWS. & SHOW BOAT requires Great" NEGRO SPIRITUAL operatic type singers I guess.
@dorothyjeandandridge Yes, that's Dot singing. There's a signature in her pronunciation. Take a listen, for example, to her singing "Whatcha Say?" with Louie Armstrong and you'll hear it. I so wish she hadn't gone to Hollywood. A waste of her time and life!
Thanks for posting. She was a great entertainer. I was aware of her talent but only discovered the Nicholas Bothers on YouTube. Wow they are great - I really love their routines. Thank you for posting.
Thank you so much for this upload. What a wonderful treat. The Nicholas Brothers & Dorothy Dandridge............dancing to the jamming music of Glenn Miller. It's hard to sit still watching this.
Pardon me boy? Yes, yes. Is that the Chattanooga choo choo? That’s the Chattanooga choo choo. On track twenty-nine. Twenty-nine? Uh-huh That’s on the Tennessee line. She said the Tennessee line, Jack. She means that she can afford I can afford to board the Chattanooga choo choo What have you got in that?! I’ve got my fare, You say you have? Uh-huh But not a nickel to spare Well I do-oo declare
i THOUGHT that the 2 dancing males had a ridiculously fine chemistry with Dorothy in this clip...and then I read up on her and realized one was actually married to her! haha, that was his adoration for her shining through then I guess

right at the end you hear some faint applause. If I'd been there I'd have been wooping and stuff.

You leave the Pennsylvania station bout a quarter to four (quarter to four)
Read a magazine and then you’re in Baltimore
Dinner in the diner, nothing could be finer
Than to have your ham and eggs in Carolina
When you hear the hoof hoof blowing into the bar
Then you know that the Tennessee is not very far
Shovel all the coal in, got to keep it rolling
Wooo Chattanooga that’s where you are
Chattanooga choo choo there you are!
