  • Tracy lost in the quaters to Pam Shriver ( straight sets) at the Austalian Open as well as Wimbledon in 1981, she was not the grass court player that Chris was.

  • Its really too bad Austin got the injury which put her out of the game...She definitely would have won her fair share of matches with Chris and Martina. It would have been interesting to see how she did against players like Graf, Sabatini and Seles too later in her career

  • @mbblover Chris was a far better grass court player than Tracy or Pam, so it would be no surprise that she would beat Pam. Further Andrea is a baseline player, and Pam is a serve and volley player, who's game would be rewarded on the grass surface. Chris's return of serve which was the best in the women's game during her era, would have been quite a weapon against most serve and volley players.

  • i guess tracy losing to shriver was bound to happen eventually, in fact, i believe shriver beat austin 2 more times and both on grass in i think late 1981/1982,just thought it was kind of odd that tracy would play so well this week at easbourne and then lose to shriver kind of routinely 7-5, 6-4. now, if tracy had been playing badly right before wimby then i could see. even then, the straight set score? chris whipped shriver in the next round, how to explain chrissie taking pammie easily?

  • mbblover Well did she really play that well ?, there was no great victory.. perhaps the final.. but she was seeded #1, and Andrea was the one who beat Martina in the semi-final... Tracy beat Barbara Potter... plus Pam was her age group and it has always been harder or the matches tougher when it was an opponent from one's age group. Tracy just wasn't the same kind of grass court player as Chirs, didn't have the variety.

  • tracy played so well to win this tournament and yet, a week later she would lose for the very first time to shriver in the quarterfinals at wimby 7-5, 6-4? not sure how to explain that loss? shriver lost in the semis handily to evert 6-3, 6-1!

  • you shouldnt be so hard on tracy.shriver had a very big serve.and it was lethal on grass.shriver was a very tall woman 6 foot 1.and she beat graf at wimbledon to more than once.

  • @jayfey77 ??? What you`re talking about? Shriver beat Graf only 1 time in Wimbledon and that was in 1985 where Steffi was very young, later Graf beat Shriver 2 times in Wimbledon, in the Semis 1987 and 1988 and both times very clear!

  • @ErdalYildizFan shriver has beaten graf more than once.not just at wimbledon.

  • @jayfey77 Yes but you wrote "and she beat graf at wimbledon to more than once"! But Graf leads head to head 9-3!

  • @ErdalYildizFan ok numbers don't always tell the story.graf had beaten seles 3 times at age 15 and yet seles was dominating her by 1993 even though she had a losing record against graf thanks to those 3 wins by graf in 89.

  • @jayfey77 Yes, but Shriver is no Seles! Seles was a Champion, Shriver was always behind Evert, Navratilova and Graf!

  • How wonderful to hear the voice of the great Dan Maskell again. Growing up in the Uk watching Wimbledon on the BBC and hearing his voice always reminds me of English summers.

  • @jayfey77 Did Martina and Chris enter this tourney?

  • martina did chris didnt, martina was beaten by jaeger. in the semifinals i believe if you look at part 1 at the start it shows the scores leading up to the final for every round.

  • Andrea did beat Tracy twice in 10 matches, actually.

  • two great players who retired too early. then you see someone like navratilova who played until 50.

  • I had forgotten how fidgety Austin was on court...good lord.

  • tracy was such a competitor and gifted player, she would have no doubt won wimbledon one day if she hadnt retired prematurely due to injury, she could obviously play very well on grass ( a surface not suited to her game) who knows? if Tracy had dominated Martina and chris for a few more years then they may have retired earlier themselves? We will never know.

  • Andrea Jaeger is an amazing tennis player. There was an article about her in the newspaper bout how she was so good and how now that she retired from tennis she turned into a nun. it's amazing. her overheads are like bam! and her serves have so much power. she had austin running every which way. amazing!

  • This is amazing that you uploaded this video. Thanks for this, I can remember this match when I was in junior high lol.

  • I wouldn't exactly call a swing volley modern ... couldn't do that with a wood racket... I would call Andrea raquet modern at the time... theh reason she hits harder and seem to have better control .. too bad Tracy and Chris didn't let go of the wood racket early .. especially Chris tennis history might be quite different if she did....

  • i think chris did try the wilson racquet andrea was using and didnt like it....then she went to the mid size later....jaegars racquet was the wilson ultra....it was really a tough racquet to hit with...the head actually seemed smaller than a wood ...

  • Easy to think that one or both of them might have gone on to win Wimbledon one day. That said, Austin won the US Open for the second time later that season. And Jaegar was a finalist at the 1982 French Open and 1983 Wimbldeon. But there were no more major finals for them after that.

  • omg did I see a modern swinging backhand volley on this game? wtf? she is so advance!
