  • My goodness! Is this what they call the Goddess of Sopranos? LOL! I saw her on BBC 2 during an interview about her music and her show, and she was ask about Britain's Got Talent Winner Susan Boyle's rendition of "I dreamed a dream". And she was so mean, she said, I'm not doing a "whizbang" here. Not only to Boyle but also to Katherine Jenkins. She's too perfectionist! It sounds that she's insecure or what? Well, we have different taste and styles. After all, Ms. Kanawa has a talent.

  • She can do better than this.

  • That was horrid. Thin and reedy.

Was she trying to stop the 'bel canto' voice that really doesn't suit musical theatre?

FWIW, I think Boyle is dire. to judge from her pace and projection, I'd say Boyle doesn't understand the songs she sings.

  • No one ever did it better. No one ever did anything she sings better. She could sing the phone-book and the universe would be entranced.

  • The Dame goes for the easy thing. I'm sure this sort of thing will appeal to a wider public (sentimental fools). Next she'll sing - what was her name - Maria Cary? A proper soprano should not bemean to singing Italian Romantics and almost anything to have followed. Can one imagine Bartoli, Basso, Jaroussky, Mingardo, Invernizzi, Scholl, Prina, Daniels or Semmingsen settling down in that gutter, figuratively speaking!

  • @LeoInterHyenaem quite the snob aren't we . . . by the way it is Mariah Carey. A "proper soprano" . . sounds like a designation . . . is it only "designated" for "Dames"? A true "singer" sings what resonates with her/him, and there is no "gutter" or "proper" music for such. A famous musician once said that there were 2 kinds of music . . good music and bad music . . . . and the Dame has earned the right to chose to sing whatever she wants . . .

  • I agree this is not the best version for such a song.... I don't see why not compare, it's just for discussing on tastes. Of course this woman rocks, but the song's and story's plot goes better with a more dramatic yet less lyrical interpretation in my opinion. I totally prefer susan boyle's

  • This song does not go well with her voice. It's too soft.

Kiri Te Kanawa has a perfect voice for singing arias, not this.

(I go crazy when she sings "O mio babbino caro", btw)

  • and she clapping and clapping and clapping .............for what, she was bad, each

greehorn can hear this song is not her style

  • kiri u killed this song u r so controlled use ur kaha u know your natural talent you need to go back to your roots before you became toffee

  • kiri u killed this song u r so controlled use ur kaha u know your natural talent

  • this is awful i hate the way she kills beautiful music this is rubbish

  • This is a very disappointing rendition!

  • There`s nothing to compare, Dame Kiri is a master. Pathetic is also to compare Susan Boyle to Eileen Page... it was quite embarrising to hear them sing together.

  • I much prefer Susan Boyle's rendition, it gives me goosebumps. Sorry Dame Te Kanawa this lacks emotion and just falls flat. I still think 'A World in Union' is awesome. Roll on Rugby World Cup New Zealand 2011. Go Scotland!!!

  • @islogical But for me, I couldn't stand Susan Boyle, her version is filled with vibrato =__='' It seems to me that she doesn't know where to end her breath. Obviously, it's just my opinion. My ears are not familiar with pop singing, btw.

  • kiri was already old here - when she was in her prime (in the ~1980's) she was really great - and her repertoire was enormous.

  • Swearing at someone shows low IQ...Susan Boyle brings more emotion to this song than Dame Kiri...that is just my opinion....but Dame Kiri is a wonderful singer in her on right...

  • I actually think Susan sings this better...

  • @tigerlilly1073 You have to remember that Susan is a lot younger and has a much wider appeal internationally. It is unfair to compare them, but Kiri has a certain following outside the mainstream experts like Simon Cowell and Oprah Winfrey.

  • please do not compare the goddess of sopranos, kiri te kanawa, with susan boyle. i don't understand why we always need to compare~ just enjoy each musician and each performance separately for its own merit.

  • @timesinger I love Susan Boyle's rendition of this song, and I admire Kiri Te Kanawa in the Mozart recordings I have with her. However, I strongly disagree with her being the goddess of sopranos. If this was true, a postulate I don't think you'll find any musicologist backing, we may wonder why 1) she didn't bother to learn this song properly and 2) why she didn't perform something slightly more challenging.

  • She sings this very well, and yes Susan Boyle sings this great too. These are two different animals altogether. I wasn't too fond of the Orchestration but that's me. This really doesn't do Kiri justice, she is better suited for old school Opera in my opinion.

  • She can sing, but the notes are wrong and the lines aren't sustained. I don't like this version at all.

  • Listen Kiri is to have a fresh encounter with angels.

  • I've seen Kiri live several times, she's quite stunning. These orchestration is not that pleasent to me. But Kiri does herbest with it. I think with better orchestration this may have been better.

  • I love Kiri T.K. , I like Susan Boyle. Both have their talent. I personally think Susan hasn't got the best voice but she sings in a special way. She looks happy when she sings. I don't think Dame Kiri should sing these kind of songs. I prefer her opera performances.

  • This has all the passion of a wet washrag. Stick to opera, dearie.

  • dame Kiri has a wonderful voice, miles better than susan boyle, but susan sings it with a lot of emotion...the song is almost about her life...this is not dame Kiri's type of song at all.she shud stick to opera

  • I love her countessa but for this kind of songs I much prefer a belting voice

  • Just too clinical for me. No emotion, just technique. Not her type of music at all.

  • I don't like this. It's too jaunty while this is not meant to be upbeat. It's silly to compare opera singers to any other kind of singer. Opera singers are masters of the art.

  • And Dame is singing this all in head voice .. that's why it doesn't sound strong

  • please, can someone tell the piano guy that his is playing a classic from musicals like blues ! oh god

  • this really isnt that good to be honest - do like Kiri but this is pretty average!!!!

  • Considering natural voice, clarity, phrasing, enunciation and emoting Ms. Leah Salonga is the winner - by a long shot!

  • Belíssima Dame.

  • This song shows the 'limitations' of many opera-trained singers, when they turn their hand to musical numbers. Whilst Te Kanawa certainly manages the song easily from a technical point of view her lack of acting ability makes it tedious. Don't get me wrong, Boyle can't act either, but someone like Ruthie Henshall (her version is on here) has the right balance between an excellent, if not operatic voice, and fine acting ability, which Boyle and many opera stars, do not have.

  • Boring. Too careful and articulated. And sung in too high a key.

  • what s hit version of this song she wrecks this song susan boyles version is far better then this screechin sheep rooter

  • I think its interesting how she sings it faster than other versions: It adds a desperation effect that does effectively capture (though differently from other versions) the despondency that the song is supposed to contain.

  • Since everyone is fixated on comparing this version on that of Susan Boyle, let me bring another into the mix. Check out Hayley Westenra's version. It can be found here on You Tube. Though not as emotionally charged as the two aforementioned, it certainly shows a vocal talent at a tender age.

  • Sorry but I'm not keen on this at all-this is not a suitable song for her , opera yes. Sometimes it's best to stay within your area of expertise, (ps. I thought I heard a slightly different melody near the beginning)

  • Wonderful singer is Kiri - BUT - Susan Boyle without professional training is a natural and the public has voted. They appreciate "natural talent" over professional talent which has trained for years and years. Go Susan - Knock em dead!

  • I f that is the best she can do, she should consider giving up smoking!

  • Best View today

  • Why are we even comparing the two??

  • Que lindo canta esta señora!!!!, she is one my favorites of all times!!!, wonderful interpretation...magnific,magnifica,bravaaaa!!!!!

  • and she says real singers don't use mics.....

  • Of course Susan is not Kiri. Who is? However, this should be no objection to her, and she did sing it with true passion. It seems as though Kiri just does'nt really like this song.

  • Too fast! Too fast! but brilliant singing

  • Dame Kiri remains SUPREME! Boyle is just a amateur.

  • what happened to the top of her dress? did it fall off? ooooohh....

  • Being serious. With singing, it is whether we enjoy something or not. It is not technical ability which does that for a lot of people. I am a great Kiri fan, and from Kiri's country also. Kiri can sing nearly everything. We all know that.

As far as this song is concerned, I really enjoyed Susan's version. She did a great job, and it does show that the public is not entirely stupid. Some singers I just don't like. Susan has definitely got something, and the public knows it too.

  • It is so easy to understand the fact that in this case we have the same song but diferent singers:Dame Kanawa is a lyric soprano and did the rendition with all the classical and vocal training she has to do.Mrs, Susan Boyle must be considered as a pop singer with a powerfull voice , and in her rendition she uses the best tecnic for pop rendition. So all we have to do is to accept that they are in diferent fields.

  • I love Dame Kiri but for goodness sake stop bashing Susan Boyle .They are not in the same league.Technically,Dame Kiri masters her voice brilliantly and she is so elegant and refine. But Susan's has a lot of rough edges , technically not perfect but BOY she moves me to tears.Aiming to be perfect is fine but it removes the depths and the emotional side.Susan,STAY THE WAY YOU ARE.

  • Boyle brings her own life's suffering into this song..... Dame Kiri has a glorious sound, but it is an instrument. I still think Boyle's version speaks to human experience in ways this technically perfect version does not.

  • I can't believe this woman ditched a tour with John Farnham. Oh no - women might throw their underwear at him!!! lol it's called fans love, people with a sense of humour like John. I am sure it didn't hurt his career.

  • This is the MOST wonderful version of this Song.. Agree?

  • I don't understand how people can compare Dame Kiri with anybody who is existing.

She is the ultimate and with fad and vogue coming here and there, still Kiri Te Kenawa will be like a firmament in heaven, unchanged and brilliantly sparkling.

  • Oh, she's good. I still prefer Patti LUPone tho.

  • I don't understand how anyone can say this version is terrible.....

  • This is an interesting example of how some songs, especially 'musical theatre' songs need people that can ACT through their singing voices and not just cope with the technical demands of the music, notes etc.

Whilst there's no doubting Te Kanawa's remarkable vocal qualities the simple fact is that she can't act and the haunting beauty of this song therefore gets lost somehow. Check out Ruthie Henshall nailing this song in the Les Mis live concert to see what I mean.

  • I love Dame Kiri te Kanawa, but this version of I Dreamed a Dream is absolutely terrible!

Maybe the song and her voice are just not suited?

  • we can't compare Kirir with Boyle...i love both of them....but they have different styles

  • I have experienced first hand that many people like "simple singing", simple music"...

They are not capable of appreciating classical music - In fact they dislike it!

I believe it has something to do how our brains are wired.

Glenn Goulds Bach-interpretetions will never go down well in the pub among the locals. But a live performance by Tom Jones at his best certainly would!

By the way... I like Kiri Te Kanawa, but this version I don´t like at all!

  • @maxhansendk I would take Glenn Gould, Kiri or Tom Jones. All great performers. Of the three, I think Glenn Gould.

  • SHE IS MY FAVORITE SOPRANO, I WENT TO SEE HER AT LINCON CENTER IT WAS FABULOUS!!!

  • How on earth can you possibly compare the fat, ugly cow with Kiri. Boyle is a misunderstanding, product of the total ignorance and lack of taste. Kiri is a DIVA, one of the most wonderful thing that has happened to the world of music !!s

  • @bassoassoluto Totally agree with you and lol @ fat ugly cow!! Troll!!!

  • @bassoassoluto Hi. You have to understand that the British people are very patriotic. To them Susam Boyle is a "forces sweetheart". Kiri is just "foreign".

  • I love how people think they need to compare, compare, compare. Listen to it, enjoy it. Diversity is wonderful. I wish more people would think so. It's time to come out of your box and open your mind to new things. My personal favorite to sing this song is Elaine Paige, but I LOVE this rendition. Yes, Kiri adds more of an opera approach. It's fantastic. Get over it, Susan lovers. Don't like it? That's nice, but keep it to yourself. Please and thank you!

  • As many commentators have already more or less stated, Te Kanawa has a magnificent voice, but this is played too fast and too kitschy to even give her a chance to equal Henshall's definitive performance.

  • What a horrible thing to say that Susan Boyle is a "freak" - it defies any level of civility. Kiri is such an icon, but Susan is a fine singer as well - let's be a little less nasty. They are both great ladies and have fine voices.

  • @taxfundi Bravo!

  • Yes, it is a bit fast, --- but what emotion one finds in Kiri's version.! No cheap gimmicks. Hasn't anyone noticed that the tears start around 150 and she is weeping at the end ?? Of course, being utterly professional "the show goes on" but anyone who knows her can see her pain and knows that SHE knows what the song is about.

  • actually i can't decide wich version i like!! both are beautiful...but they're different :) I love Susan and Dame Kiri

  • Ruth Henshall's performance at the Royal Albert is not something that can be equaled or surpassed.

Kiri's voice, while absolutely gorgeous, is not right for this song.

This version moves along too quickly; like they're impatient to get to something really interesting.

  • does anyone if this wondefull concert is on DVD?

thanks a lot for the video

    Frank

  • Go listen to her Hab Mirst Gelobt, or her Gluck Das Mir Veblieb, not this musical piece Kiri wasnt meant to sing. And if you've listened to Gluck Das Mir Veblieb or Hab Mirs Gelobt and still say Susan Boyle with her Dreamed a Dream is still a better artist, you should either learn to grow a new set of ears or simply shut up - because opera is not a subjective art form - there are internationally recognized standards and if you cannot weigh that then you have no business saying a thing about Kiri

  • It's quite sublime. Some people have no understanding of this woman's talents.

  • That was....awful. The speed was too fast, the orchestration was terrible and Dame Kiri managed to take one of the most emotional and beautiful songs and perform it without any emotion or beauty. No inflection or anything! Ruthie Henshall sings it the best.

  • The last few notes show why Dame Kiri is not only an internationally accliamed Opera singer (where susan boyle is commercially made) but she has the order of New Zealand and Australia, a Dame of the British empire, 10 honorary degrees, 5 honorary fellowships, 3 international trust dedicated to helping new and emerging artists and donates millions! Whats Susan Boyle done recently and will we remember her in 20 years??? No.

  • @richc20 Susan Boyle will be remembered in 20 years time simply for that audition, thats a fact, the facts about Kiri I agree with you!

  • i did not think this song suited her voice at all.

  • if there was anyone who can sing anything well and make it at most enjoyable...there is nothing like a Dame...one person in life i would truly love to meet before i die...How do i get the chance to do just that?

  • but who sings better? cmon... whatever it might be boyle is so beyond this MULTI YEAR OPERA SINGER....

  • no offense, but this rendition is better than susan's

  • Comparisons between Te Kenawa, my favourite singer, and Boyle are

pointless and insulting to both. Te Kenawa has a life reputation as one of the most accomplished operatic

sopranos of all time and sings this beautifully - but she is not beyond criticism -however talented. Boyle's rendition is at a pace and in a manner which exudes a passion more in keeping with the lyrics They are also both great jazz singers e.g. Boyle-'Cry me a River' and Te Kenawa-' It Never was You.'

  • @golsno147 As Dame Kiri herself would say -"It's all good". ---- the more interpretations of any music the better.

  • Its a bit fast for her. Sounds like it would be extremely difficult to sing like this at that speed. Good Job!

  • sorry i do not like this , rather susan´s boyle. thanks kiri for your participation.

  • @lollipop4111 Well. Kiri did not just "participate". She was singing this song night after night long before Boyle was even heard of. remember. Boyle is a creation of Simon Cowell's marketing empire. Kiri is a creation of sheer talent and hard work.

  • nobody handles their voice like the great one! Thanks for the video!

  • @cathode1990

That's because you have good taste!

  • The Dame sings great opera, but I am disappointed in her rendition here Susan B's version leaves this one in the dust. "Not at ease in the popular register" that's a fine way to put it.

  • Kiri is an opera singer and has a an opera technique.

Susan is a popular singer and has popular singer technique.

The problem is that all popular singers lose their voice with years because they sing with their throat and their body.

  • @sverigech There's no operatic technique here, it's out of tune. Awful.

  • @leahcim38

    Yes I understand.

An opera singer (Kiri is one of the best if you like opera) is never at ease in "popular register".

    This is the demonstration.

  • susan do it better....

  • Dame Kiri Te Kanawa was taught using the same methods as were used to teach Deanna Durbin. I've watched Deanna many times, and now observe that Kiri appears to use the same breathing technique as Deanna.

  • Sorry Kiri but you totally murdered this song!!! You suck!!!!

  • Dame Kiri didn't really make a personal attack at Susan Boyle. She was asked what she thought of her in an interview and replied that she was doing something classical not whizz bang and didn't want to speak further on the subject.

  • Dame Kiri is a very good opera singer and as a trained voice in that genre comes somewhat close to human perfection ... but that is not the style for this piece. I think this rendition is oversung and overproduced such that the lyric value is a bit lost. Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut no ---- Susan Boyle is not the alternative ... (sorry Susan). Who mentioned Patti LuPone ??? Now ya talkin!!!!! Horses 4 courses I say

  • Didn't know Kiri had dissed Boyle till I read this stream. Oh dear...not nice. A real lady would wish only the best for a damaged bird like Boyle. But I've always felt something icy and fake underneath Kiri's gracious exterior...and this proves it.

  • @jimdivax well if you're only getting your information from comments on youtube then you're a bigger nitwit than the idiotic mammal who wrote that rubbish. oh my life i can't stop laughing at you people and your judgements. kiri te kanawa is the queen of opera and susan boyle reigned on britain's got talent...enough said except i love you kiri

  • there is no way Susan Boyle Can outsing this Legend.........what a stupid thing to say lol

  • @craigisabeth Not Kiri's territory at all. A bit too raw and real for her twittery lyric soprano. Love her 'Merry Widow', though...oh, and 'World In Union'...but Boyle IS THIS SONG now! Even Cameron Mackintosh accepts she's made it her won.

  • where's the passion?

  • Well I heard Dame Kiri had dissed Susan Boyle - so I searched for her version. Because she is a trained classical singer, I thought her version was bound to be superior. But you know what - It is not better. Susan from the common people wins hands down. Dame Kiri should keep her mouth shut - she is not half as good as she obviously thinks she is.

  • @dossery100 what, you personally overheard dame kiri "dissing" as you so eloquently put it, susan boyle did you? my word what rot you people come up with. there's no need for to slander a wonderfully accomplished professional opera singer because in your expert opinion your beloved susan's is better. just say so and leave it at that. oh and i love you kiri lol

  • To be honest, I think both versions have their merits. They're simply sung in different styles. Kiri's is very classy, very operatic, calm and beautiful. Susan Boyle's is much more modern. Her voice is powerful, and in my opinion, injects more emotion into the performance. Personally, I prefer Boyle's, but that's just my taste in music.

I don't think anyone approves of Kiri's cattiness, though. Maybe she should listen to the lyrics she sings and leave other folks' dreams alone.

  • shes a jealous old woka blonde, shes put down others as well shes a maori tryin to be blonde ,

  • Like Juan Diego Florez, she can switch the full opera voice off, which is easy anyway as you have to switch it on in the first place, its not your bath/shower voice!Katherine Jenkins is in her classical voice for all songs(not opera ;))therefore murders not classical songs!and classical come to think of it!:)

  • Te kanawa is my favorite singer of all time for opera --- BUT -- for Les Mis, I'll put Patti Lupone on my playlist.

  • @Rohloffp Excuse me but I'd rather listen to this rendition of the song over Susan's any time, and even if it were Kiri today meaning now in 2010. This is pretty, Susan's in case you haven't listened carefully by being so busy argueing is pushed, forced, and it doesn't even deserve to be compared with Dame Kiri's. And the fact that this video has only had 212, 456 views and freak Susan's 8,041, 996 views doesn't prove that her's it better, it only proves that we're a world full of freaks.

  • @barmanjoe Susan Boyle is not a "freak." She's an ordinary Scottish woman who loves to sing and got a break on a t.v. show. She's also a very musical person with a sweet as well as powerful, but not well-trained, voice who shouldn't be compared to the brilliant Dame Kiri. It's like comparing a talented street corner hoofer with Fred Astaire. But you know what? I like both versions of this song. Both women bring the appropriate emotion to the song, each in her own way.

  • @caraphyllis Finally someone who agrees with me, I don't say Susan's is not nice to listen to, all I am protesting against is when I see people compare Susan with Kiri, and even say that Susan's version is better, and you put it perfectly it's like comparing that with the other. I have sung at an outdoor concert here in Auckland for a while, and at the rehearsal in a huge cathedral that sat the whole 800 people choir we sang a Maori song. Kiri soared over the choir at our loudest, no microphone.

  • @caraphyllis

    very well said indeed sir!!!

You know I was about to elaborate on all the ways te Kanawa is superior to Boyle, but your comment stopped me lol. It's unnecessary.

  • @ShawDAMAN

I'm not a sir, but thanks for your praise anyway.

  • @caraphyllis whoops sorry and ur welcome

  • @caraphyllis i agree with you !! regards from Argentina

  • @caraphyllis I agree with you! Is it better to enjoy the variety...

  • @barmanjoe Unfortunately patriotism comes into it. There are a lot more Euros than Kiwis. The Euros will always support the Eurostates. Also, Simon Cowell is loved in the USA, so Susan will get support there also. Still, I have heard that Kiri is popular in Brazil.

  • @barmanjoe Totally agree....except Susan's just Susan, and not a freak, necessarily, just herself. Which is an odd self, but herself nonetheless....and the original video of Boyle's performance has over 95 million views. Even more astronomical than quoted here.

  • @barmanjoe .......Susan Boyle is better any day.... Susan is too good ...

  • @eddiespotty That's fine, you can listen and appreciate what you choose , but don't try and tell me (which I didn't say you were) to appreciate something more over something that is so far superior than it. I appreciate the artistry of Dame Kiri, and when Susan is compared with Kiri and even called better it is offensive, and the reason we differ? Education; another one, trained ear. The list could go on and on really but I don't want to get too offensive.

  • @barmanjoe Of course, - it's ridiculous to say one is better than the other. They're so different--- and "its all good". kiri will always be the constant superb artist; and Susan the natural surprise talent. The gods smile on both

  • @barmanjoe I know. If Wayne Rooney sung it, it would probably get 62,000,000 views. Does that mean Wayne Rooney is a great singer? Well. Maybe.

  • All right, chill out, there, mister High and Mighty. Who are you to judge what's right or wrong when it comes to singing? I've been a choir director for 20 years now, and I can tell you that, listening to both of them, Susan Boyle's version is full of passion, and her voice is just right for musicals like Les Misérables. Kiri Te Kanawa's voice, although it's clearly very fine and equally passionate, sounds kind of out of place here, whereas it would sound more appropriate singing, maybe, Mozart.

  • @orphan567 I don't disagree with you one single bit and was only talking about the style of singing and that I have been spoiled with Dame Kiri, but I am glad for Susan's break that she got and I certainly wish her all the best. I think also that lately her singing (despite of what happened on the View) has been refined. I thank you for your time to comment.

  • this is far far superior to Susan Boyle. Susan Boyle has a beautiful voice too but the only reason she became famous is that English-speaking audiences find it incredible that an unattractive person can sing, we are so wrapped up in superficial beauty.

  • @MERRITTRich

You hit the nail on the head.

  • @thechinadesk .........Susan Boyle sang this song THE BEST ...... EVER!!!!

  • Kiri critisized Susan Boyle. Sour grapes, sour grapes!

Kiri is a 'Little Sister' who never fulfilled her promise. She is a trained opera singer, Susan Boyle is not, she is a 'Belter' and a good one at that!

Get over it Kiri. Susan singing this has had nearly 43 million hits, this has had 210 thousand.

  • @yumyummoany I'm sorry but that last part of your comment got to me and I had to say to you that there's more people in the world who will agree with you than with me. The trouble is that it is a majority full of idiots and musical ignoramuses!!!!

  • it sounds as if they're trying to rush the song through... WAY TOO FAST!!!

  • dream on Kiri for you have killed your own dream

  • Does anyone if this wonderfull show is on DVD???

    please, let me now

  • This old gal sounds like she's constipated - she would be best to listen to Dame Susan Boyle sing this beautifully.

  • I'm sorry, she's a great singer, but this is very average.

  • @rogmofreakymar

Ruthie Henshaw does not exist. It's Ruthie Henshall! You are certainly entitled to your own opinions, but the Broadway production (1987) was not the original. The premiere was in Paris in 1980, followed by a West End performance in 1985. Only then did the musical come to the US. It's always best to have your facts (and your spelling) straight. Good day to you!

  • indeed mrs. dame kiri te kanawa has agreat voice (nobody can deny it), but, in term of this song, ... well, i only see a great singer, but not FANTINE (the cast). in my opinion, ruthie did better in bringing out the desperado of fantine..

  • Too fast; i think she's great, but i don't like her version.

  • wtf is this?

im not hating! but she gave this song no meaning.

she should just stick to opera!!

  • am a New Zealander who admired and respected Dame Kiri for many years -

she has lost my respect because she uses her New Zealand heritage as a convenience, not having lived here for 40 years (and rarely visits), and her abuse of younger singers is unacceptable. Andre Boccelli, Hayley Westenra (our own) and now Susan Boyle. Kiri, Dame Mary Leo would be embarrassed by your outbursts. hey ' Jeffomil' - there is emotion in Susan and none in Dame Kiri - and is not music about emotion.

  • @indah007 Kiri is just tellingf it like it is - the people she mentioned are just wannabees- not serious singers nor could they ever be - Caruso once said you must be honest when critiquing a voice you find objectionable -- if not they will say you know nothing about the art of singing - It may not make you any friends but it is necessary to be honest

  • I am a New Zealander who admired and respected Dame Kiri for many years -

she has lost my respect because she uses her New Zealand heritage as a convenience, not having lived here for 40 years (and rarely visits), and her abuse of younger singers is unacceptable. Andre Boccelli, Hayley Westenra (our own) and now Susan Boyle. Kiri, Dame Mary Leo would be embarrassed by your outbursts.

  • @indah007. Why would her New Zealand heritage be a convenience in a European and American opera world ?? NZ is not in the news much you should know. She returns to New Zealand for several months most years, so wrong about that as well. Bocelli, Westenra etc are not opera singers, which is what she is reported to have said of them. A simple statement of fact, so therefore cannot be abuse. I know that you are now embarrassed by your outburst.

  • @stradevarious It does not matter. You are right. Kiri is not well known in the America or Europe. However, she is well known and admired in places like Brazil, Japan, Spain, Canada, Hungary, Sweden, Russia and Australia. They love her in these countries. She doesn't need to worry about the Europe and America.

  • Rant Part 2

There's a difference between making beautiful sounds ( which this song does NOT need) and understanding the lyrics, and how to express to the audience what the lyricist meant when he wrote this song. This is not a song about beauty, and should not necessarily sound beautiful. This is a song about loss, about bitterness, about disappointment. No need to make it "beautiful." No need to show us your beautiful voice.

  • Rant, Part 1

Y'know, I've heard at least 8 female vocalists sing this song, and seen the written comments on this site and I really think most of you are, if you'll excuse me, MISSING THE POINT. All the other vocalists, including the much-vaunted Ruthie Henshall, have far better, more trained voices than Susan Boyle. But NONE of them sing the song as well.

  • i think Kiri should get vocal lessens from Susan boyle lolz

  • @Annasavi really? do you prefer that shrieky yelling belting garbage that susan does with her panty vibrato? Personally, i find kiri singing this song (which is probably as far as you can get from her specialty) much better than susan's little 5 minutes of fame. I'd personally enjoy watching Susan Boyle attemping the music of Richard Strauss, Verdi, Puccini, and Mozart. Oh right, and when do you think Boyle will achieve the title of "dame" like te kanawa? right, never.

  • Agreed that Ruthie Henshall owns this song, but we love Kiri either way! Now for my plug ... if you're an Aussie or Kiwi fan of this song and want to help us get Ruthie Henshall down under to sing it live so you can hear for yourself, please join our FB group "Ruthie Henshall Rocks Australia" and help us make it happen ;-)

  • susan boyle is better

  • @270270wsm

    LOL!!!

  • sucks. go be a waitress.

  • OMG she's fucking terrible! To think all that crap she was saying about Susan Boyle. There is nothing arresting about this performance at all. Maybe she should just stick to Opera. This is awful!

  • This is TRUELY awful and if she were auditioning for the part, she would lose!!!

What's with the pseudo Irish accent? Kiri has a strange phrasing and this is her language. Oh Help!

  • I like Susan Boyle better.

  • Oh well ! ..........I suppose a duet with Subo is out of the question then !

  • This is a horrific transfer of the music. The speed changes, It should be removed. Or suspended! Why is this here?

  • Good Lord - I know which version I prefer. Kiri sounds like she has a sore throat. Susan's version has so much more feeling and her voice has more power than Kiri's. I know I will listen to Susan Boyle again and again but I certainly will not be listening to Kiri's version again.

  • @Kady2008Princess , spot on with your comment , i had to have a listen myself after reading she had a pop at susan boyle as a legitimate performer , i suspose you have to pity her really , pretty sad

  • @Kady2008Princess Strangely enough all the criticism of Kiri is coming from the England. You are from there also. When has the England ever produced a singer like Kiri? Answer - never! Kiri doesn't need you peasants from England. Kiri is loved in places like Brazil, Russia and Japan. Even some people in the US like her. Kiri is right. Simon Cowell and his stupid show are talentless.

  • @SugarTomAppleRoger I am so sorry if I offended you by prefering Susan's rendition to Dame Kiri's effort. I am not actually english although I am from the UK, I am also not a peasant though if I were it would be nothing to be ashamed of. I am very surprised at the tone of your comment as everyone I have met from New Zealand has been lovely but I expect every country has both pleasant and unpleasant people living there.
