but i kind of prefer the canaries because they seem smarter to me^^ they always find the entrance of their cage when i let them fly around free in my room while the zebrafinches dont understad how to enter the cage
my finch hates being out of the cage the canary is still a baby so havent let her out yet she sings and dances to music though :-) which is fun to watch
My finches learned that when the lights started going out at night it meant bed time and they would go back to their cages. It's all in the routine you set. For the 1st month I would turn out all but one light and then say "bed time" I would then take a flash light and turn out the last light and spot light one bird turn the light off and scoop up the bird placing it in the cage....repeted for the 2nd bird. This taught them when the lights went low to go to bed.
hope you know that birds always need some real wooden and elastic sticks in their cage aswell otherwise theyre likely to get infections in their hinges and the claws get too long

There used to be 5 but 1 died so Ive only got the 4 they are old now as i bought them from someone who got allergic to them.
