One of probably many answers to that would simply be: because todays economy depends on oil AND oil sales. One can only wonder how much better would life be if ford hadn't flooded the market with the Model-T as the first vehicle on the road was in-fact an electric car.. did about 15km/h and had a pretty short range, but if we stayed with those and improved them over the years... there would be very little gas/diesel powered machines and cars. but again all the damn money is in petrol sales...
Ok, I know this might sound naive, but why dont the EV advocacy groups, clubs etc in the US, or even in concert with others...americans arent the only ones that want EV's ), petition your president directly? The last time a US president understood Americas dirty oil....problem was in 1976. You may never get another chance, Li-on is a scam, and hes buying it hook+line. I mean, your congress+senate love to have hearings about the most asinine crap. Why not have em talk about chevron for a while
No, NiMH is still better. 1997 they made Ovonic NiMH battery pack which gave about 300 miles per charge. Modern advanced NiMH has quick charge, last longer then the car itself, hold 85% of it's charge after a year etc!
Lithiums are unproven, you need to replace them every 3 years or so just like the lithiums in your cell phone & lap top.
As I said NiMH is better but currently you cannot buy in larger packs. It was being stifled by Chevron but more recently Cobasys (own NiMH patents) was sold so maybe soon. If you want to make packs out of AA get Powerex or Sanyo Eneloops. For lithium I am not positive as they've proven to die in a few years thus not really paying attention to what's available.
I just read on wiki they discharge more, weigh more then lithiums and they have only 1000 cycles...Do they die after those 1000? I don't know if they're that good for cars then? I'm not being ignorant, I'm just considering everything ;)
No they're guaranteed to charge at least 1,000 times, they'll outlast your car. All the original NiMH battery packs in those Rav4 EVs are still in use today. They are a little larger but it's getting smaller & smaller... I think maybe 15% more space is needed. Bottom line is their proven and lithiums are proven to only last a few years.
But 1000 times, if you charge them every night then you only got 3 years? sry for all the questions ;) I know they're good for the environment en so on :D
Well A) You can't possibly drain them everyday B) Say you actually do, they'll be fine. They're just guaranteed for 1,000 charges but will last much longer. Just grab a pack or two of Sany Eneloop or Powerex (ones that keep 85% charge even after a year) and use them for a while to test on for yourself. Get a real charger though, and avoid Energizer!

Fuel is so expensive here in the UK the EV would sell like hotcakes!! The only semi-electric vehicle GM are producing is the Volt and that's not even out until 2011..
Not only that but only get 40 miles on the electric battery seems like a giant step back to me when they had the technology in 1996 to make a suitable EV.
As usual, ignoramuses get their idiotic mistakes straight from Rush, the Oxycoton liar. We make MORE electric than we use via our rooftop solar system.
Really, last time I checked one of these solar pannels cannot even run a water heater throughout the year and the system cost about $3000. Trust me most of the hotels here in Europe have them and they are horrible. We are not there yet buddy. So if we all plug our cars in can you tell me where you are going to get all the energy? Maybe from the methane inside of you, since the cocconuts in congress do not want us to build clean nuclear power plants and burn dirty coal.
"Really" WHAT?? Are you an idiot about technology?? We make over 600 kWh of electric per month with our modest system, driving 2000 miles per month only costs 500 kWh. Study and learn.
@liveoilfree we will have problems with the fast-charge systems. The electricity network should be able to deliver in the worst-case scenario. Which is if all the cars are charged at the same time with a fast-charge system. We can never have those amounts of electricity available. We could make it possible, but then households should be able to generate some of their ev-power..
liveoilfree, do you know for a fact that ther'es enough nickel for a country-wide vehicle fleet? If we did it, other countries would probably do it. Are you sure ther'es enough nickel? Btw, I see that the big value of NiMH is that it's non-toxic and cheaper than lithium.
Yes. Nickel is plentiful, most is used in stainless steel and monel metal; the amount used in a fleet of EVs is miniscule by comparison. Moreover, 75% of our Ni comes from junk metal; NiMH or Lead, unlike Lithium, has a junk value and all the metals in the batteries can be reused.
My theory is they're pumping out atmosphere full of greenhouse gases because they knew our planet would cool down 100 years ago. They knew that our sun was going to shut off in the 21st century - like it's doing now. It'll free fall after the solar maximum. The greenhouse gases will help to moderate our temps.
No, I don't believe this theory, but it helps to make sense of their idiotic choices.
Interesting theory. But the sun is not shutting down...and with greenhouse gases, sometimes the temp will fall, like if Greenland melts and the NA recirculator stops running.
How can this video be shown to Obama? YouTube is planning to stream Obama's "100 days" press conference live, so he must be familiar enough with the medium. Therefore, it stands to reason the information stream can somehow operate in the other direction back to the White House. Obama has indicated he wants an Internet-based, interactive government whereby citizens are involved in the policy making process and can provide feedback. So, what is the method for providing this information to him?
One gets the feeling, the top execs at GM are funded by Chevron, who are funded by the oil companies, who do not want anything on the road that takes away from gasoline sales. Hopefully, that CEO from GM that Obama fired was the idiot who sold the NIMH battery patent to Chevron in the first place. Seems to me the government could forcebly reclaim that NIMH battery patent from Chevron to restore this nation's energy resolve.
I think the lithium battery is the way to go. 1) it is non-toxic. 2) the chemicals are cheap and available 3) Nickel metal hydride battery need nickel which rare and would get very expensive if these batteries were made in large scale. 4) lithium holds more energy. 5) paving the way toward the nanotube lithium battery. 6) lithium has been proven by cell phones, laptops, and now the Tesla.
NiMH is a great battery but lithium is better, imo.
hey doug, imagine anyone trying to beat you in a discussion on battery technology! i agree that nimh is the way. is there any email addresses or phone numbers of people we can call and let them know what we want now? ie. government departments . and what are your thoughts on project better place?
they dont want you to be free and off the grid thats why they are not releasing the electric car. They dont want free people that can suffice their needs. They want you to go after them to fill your basic needs so that way they can control and dictate your life.

How the hell is Lithium Ion a scam? Much better than Nickel-metal-Hydride in so many ways?

The oil companies are buying lithium mines (we don't have much lithium on earth)
Problem is they are the best available to use in batteries :s

all of you got the point.
maybe hybrid still best solution for now.
because if the electric to charge your EV was comes from electric wire from electric power plant, then you are not green enough.

It appears some clever fellow or gal explained this to Obama. Because he discussed it with Rachel Maddow before the election.
