the halftrack probably wasnt a recon. the recon im talking about is different: assuming its a motorized company, a single attached infantry squad would need to be spaced ahead of the main force (the tanks and mass of infatntry that got slaughtered in an ambush) at 50 metres in an urban setting to clear out/detect enemy forces and prevent ambushes. all forces in a company are organized in a column- infantry/halftrack first, a connecting squad, main force, supporting force, reserve

You use the tanks to both rip through infantry barricades and as a demoalizer to the ground troops. If a tank came rolling up to me when i was behind cover, i would break cover for a new location, leaving the infantry to pick me off. Think about the tactics man.
