@mndandy It was first performed by Peter, Paul and Mary, as the opening track of their album "In the Wind". Two members of the band have songwriting credits.

hey can any one help out!! ive been looking how to get some of these songs and cant seem nowhere to find them does any one know where i can download this song from??
I've listened to a few others too since so many kind Youtubers have educated me on this song. This is the best I've heard so far as well (in my opinion anyway)
@pilesovinyl The Hollies did do a version, it's better than this version, although this is is still very cool. But being the Hollies, the masters of 3-piece harmonics, it blows you away.
The Grasshoppers weren't an actual "Christian" band, they were just doing a pretty straightforward cover of a1965 Hollies LP track, right down to the guitar solo. The other side was a cover of The Searchers Suger & Spice. I recall a pic of them dressed in some goofy outfits.
Lead Singer Jiggs Lee went on to form Cain, whose '75 LP "A Pound Of Flesh" was noted for its gross-out cover & is quite collectable. Jiggs was very outrageous on stage from what I'm told! So much for the Xian angle.....
I hear Folk, Surf, Jazz, the Guitars riffs are Brit invasion blues pop, there is also a sound that was unique to the Elektra label in the late 60's (think B.O.C. when they were 'Underbelly')
Every time I come back to this, I hear something new, a lick or a snippet of something I recognize.
Timelessness the mark of a great recording!
The lyrics are stark, the arrangement is minimal but very effective, and there is a good 'jam' to each of the parts.
Thankyou Taycella Great song and very true It really suites my mood right now. Thanks For Sharing I believe There Is A Judgement Day For Real. I put it in my favorites. KTF
You're absolutely right. This song has elements that are way ahead of their time considering it's from 1966. Their harmony coming out of the verse sounds like what rock groups were doing 5 years later. The chord structure is also intense when they leave the verses and say "Everybody's gonna pray, on the very last day, when they hear the bell ring a world away". The guitar break is great too.
Wow, cool to know there wa s arecord label called Fox right here in Minneapolis, hehheh..
hadn't even been born yet tho when this was released :P

Was this rock version of a Gospel song or something? Does anyone know what genre the original was?
anonUK 11 months ago
@anonUK Probably just a folk song. Peter, Paul and Mary did a cover of it on their album "In the Wind", if that's any indication.

This was recorded by The Grasshoppers. They were one of the best bands to come out of the mid-60s 'bug invasion'. Check out The Katydids
and The Cicadas.

They will pray but it will be too late.
Too bad hardline preachers preached the 60s Christian rock groups to Hell.
They were so doggoned good!
