About how he's saying you should ask the lift operators how to get on, when to go... I just want to ask, do you want them to spoon-feed you too? Maybe wipe your ass for you? Go after the chair in front of you. When it comes up behind you, you bend your legs and sit on it. And once you have some experience with skiing, it actually doesn't matter what you do with your poles as long as you don't let go of them. Rules about straps on chairs are for people who aren't used to poles.

i love skiing and the only problem i ever see with the ski lift is when the beginners don't get to the chair fast enough then they have to wait for the next one. then again our ski lifts are much faster then the one he's going on.

Don't worry too much.. everybody falls their first few times. Just try to move away/aside quickly. It's a little easier if you're skiing, you'll need a little more balance (and skate fast) if you're snowboarding. Just observe a while before you try. If you're skiing, keep your poles strapped to your hands so you do not drop it.
