This prop was from the set of "Star Trek: First Contact?" Dude, build a display case and make sure the batteries are taken out when you're done playing with it. That's something I'd never part with!
This was a commerically produced product. But lighting kits do exist for tric kits you can build yourself, Look to join Trek Prop Zone forum or Replica Prop Forum to learn more.
man i cant wait to get mine next week but my question is when you put the batteries in are the electronics exposed as i have not been able to find pics of the insides

No, it;s like most commercial products in that regard, not sure if it can be disassembled further to expose them.
