@Crozarius Submarines cannot launch effective torpedoes during those days while submerged. They have to be at least at near the surface where the periscope can go above water.
That's what I meant, why couldn't they fire torpedoes at periscope depth? I haven't seen the movie, only this clip, so is there a reason that they're fully surfaced?
@Crozarius Ok I see. For success, the need to know where the destroyer is. 2. The Torpedo fired came from the rear of the submarine as well. The torpedoes also go straight, and they would have missed the torpedoes will not go straight to the surface.
To see whole movie search this.. U-571 (2000) Part 1. I am watching it right now its 8 parts total.
Submarines did not need to be surfaced during a torpedo attack in WWII, because of the TDC, (Search it on wikipedia) the 'Torpedo Data Computer' which allowed torpedoes to stay on course and at a specific depth until detonation. Also, I'm not entirely sure how this works, but torpedoes can turn for a short while after being fired, even from the rear facing tube, so the submarine does not need to be facing where they need the torpedo to go.
@Crozarius The Submarine ran out of oxygen, earlier in the film they were below the maximum depth level and experienced pressurized water leaks. And now the Sub had an issue with it's tube so later you see the kid desperately reach for the valve and pull it.
these retarded action movies will not settle for less than maximum overkill. they cant just board the boat, it has to be a massive firefight because apparently everyone on a submarine had a submachine gun. they cant just sneak away or call in support, they have to personally sink a german destroyer in the most dramatically overblown fashion. it cant just blow up, there has to be a giant red and yellow fireball, because thats what explosions look like. shit like this is such lazy filmmaking.
i've ben playing silent hunter 5 and yesterday , i kid you not , i sunk the arizona exacly like that , well only diffrence was that i was underwater , but it also was my last torpedo and it also was the one on the back , one torpedo , one kill , it was beautifull :p
Man I can't understand why always someone tells that this movie is lie or smt. like that, dont you understand this is movie made by hollywood and when they make movie the first goal of their is to attract US audience, and they wont attract US audience if they would make movie about some British or Russian submariners, you better talk about the movie beacause the movie is great
This films a total lie... its was the british royal navy that carried out this mission.. NOT THE AMERICANS, dont belive me.. look it up or look at the very last line of credits in film when says who really captured the machine
@weeleon81 It's a story man, they use a lot of stuff from real life. Like when the Captain told Tyler to "take her down," they were quoting Cmdr Howard Gilmore, who was wounded by machine gun fire from a Japanese destroyer. He ordered his XO to dive his submarine, the USS Growler, so that they could escape, and he subsequently drowned. He was later on awarded the Medal of Honor. But like that other guy said, it's hollywood.
That's a shipload of dead Nazis.

I don't understand. Why didn't they attack the Destroyer while submerged? Was there some problem that forced them to be surfaced?
