  • On the std gauge Spurn Head Railway the Lifeboatmen had trollies fitted with sails. nothing as genteel as in this video

The usual means of stopping was dropping the sail and then dropping a old sleeper (tie) in front of the wheels if speed needed to be shed really fast.

As they were reckoned to be capable of up to 60mph in a strong wind one incident records that the wheels of the trolley cut the sleeper 'like a steam saw'.

The riders then elected to jump off.

  • Certainly a new meaning for the expression 'boat train'!

  • Marvellous! More please (half of this vid was credits!)

  • I'm building one railsail to cross the Atacama Desert in Chile (Metric Gauge)

  • Blimey, that thing was going!

    Cheers for the vid Bill

  • Could this be the logical solution to rising fuel costs? Brilliant idea but I bet it's got a few drawbacks, tunnels and bridges spring immediately to mind.

  • lol at that last pic! Great video, you should do an on board when you are old enough to ride on the boat

  • How often does that interesting contraption run, and when will it run next? Because I've never seen it before, and on my last visit to the Ffestiniog in August, I wasn't able to find it. Either way, good work, 5*
