To charles0322mrsdani. Your response shows me your own socialization skills are lacking. You make my point better than anything I could say myself. I feel sad for you that through your own fear, your world has become so small. BTW, Your child may experience something negative, even scary in public schools, but bad or scary things can happen anywhere. You can't put a thick enough security blanket over them without eventually suffocating them. Hiding is not the answer, communication and trust is.
How is being out in the real world with real people (both good & bad) hiding? How is having them interact with people who do NOT share their own religious or political values putting a secuirty blanket over them? They interact with people of all backgrounds, races, religions & so forth. How is that "world" small?
They are in the real world already. Why wait until they graduate from HS to experience it?
@kenmaunder - My husband and I were also concerned that our children would miss out on the socialization available in the public schools...so once a week we take our kids into the bathroom, cuss at them, push them around, steal their lunch money, and offer them drugs, and that seems to take care of it. As for under educated, my 11 year old is in her fourth year of Latin, Biology and Algebra 1. Nuff said.
Most Home School kids are under educated and socially awkward. I would home school my kids if I thought the school was to dangerous and I didn't have the ability to move, but I would never want to rob my child of the experience of going to school and making friends if I didn't need to.
So let me see if I understand what you are saying. You are saying a child that spends 180 days a year with kids that are within 5 months of their own age, are generally like them (because lets be honest, most people tend to live with others like them), are allowed to talk for 30 min or so at lunch (providing they don’t get too loud) and 30 min at recess& few min between classes, (continued)
is more socialized than a child who generally finished their work by noonish and is with kids of all ages (from baby to adult) and adult (in all stages of life) from all backgrounds, religions, and economic brackets in a variety of events (like cultural events, museums, zoos, stores, clubs, volunteer charitable work, classes, sports teams, play dates, just to name a few). (continued)
Think about it. Homeschooled children are out in the real world with real people all day long, not stuck in the four walls of a building with the same children and adults all day every day.
Does it REALLY make sense that a child who is out in the real world every day interacting with people would be socially awkard? As opposed to a child who sits behind a desk all day and repeatedly told, "Quit talking. You are hear to learn not socialize." or maybe it was jut me the teachers told that to in school?
@kenmaunder You quickly take sides based on stereotypes yet you lack any empirical research. The likelihood that you personally know any homeschooling families is low. Your mindset shows a limited and upside down world view which is most likely the product of a public education. The only thing robbed from these children is the garbage the public school system would expose them to.
This is AWSOME! I've always wondered the same thing. When the news said that the schools keep an eye on kids who otherwise slip through the cracks, but statistics say Child Abuse more often begins by 3 yrs of age....so who keeps watch? LOL And summer...hmmmm....the horrors children face in the summer....too funny. Great vid! And my kids attend public school, but I have no problem with homeschoolers (with exception to some of the looneys...the minority not majority)
