Win games. You should have won conference and played in the Liberty Bowl when we had Wimprine, Avery, and #20, but the defense couldn't stop anyone, and the special teams were terrible. That is not the A.D's fault, nor the fans.

I restored it & set it in the school PE store, knowing the only person to go in there was our horrible bully sports coach. When it went off, you could hear his screams all over the school. It ripped through muscle, tendon & bone leaving him barely able to walk & unable to play sport ever again.
He left work & committed suicide 3yrs later- I felt guilty at first, but not any more
I was a defensive lineman for this guy in HS football in middle Tn. White County in Sparta,Tn this IS him he is very honest, too honest. Memphis did'nt deserve him.

I was an invited walk-on in 1986, this school with a 56,000 seat "Bowl Stadium", world class practice facilities and a city with no pro football team, could not recruit worth a damn. It has been the joke in the country for over 30 years. They could get ever player that falls through the cracks, every player that is academically challanged, all the southern football players who never got a letter or call from this school...it is just sad.
Larry Porter will be at the podium after the 2012 season, although no fault of his own. They need to invest in the Tiger football program the way they do in basketball.

This is happening to so many mid-major programs right now. I go to Fresno State and it has the same problem. Memphis is right in the middle of SEC region and Fresno State is in the middle of PAC 10 country and we're constantly losing talent to USC, UCLA, and CAL. We have players from Fresno that want to play at USC and UCLA and not even for their hometown university. I'm sure many coaches from mid-major programs are feeling this right now. fans just need to step up and support no matter what
Unless RC and everyone else is fired, and the program is completely rebuilt from the ground up, with younger staff, the football program will continue to be the gutter shit it has been since the 1950s.

I'm a Clemson Tiger fan and Tommy West is as fine a man and football coach as you'll ever find. He wasn't successful as a coach at Clemson but he is remembered here with great fondness. Memphis administration and fans would do good to listen very carefully to what he has to say about your program and follow his advice. Best of luck to you, Coach West, wherever you land.
I am an Alum and I agree that the football program does not get the support it needs to be successful. The man went to 5 bowl games and we run himout of town. No one else has done that at Memphis!!!!
As a Tiger and alumn I say just get rid of the football program and focus all the money into Basketball program. Then maybe they'd let us get out of stupid C-USA.

Houston has a much bigger talent pool to pull from than Memphis does and has a larger city with more "amenities" to attract players. Tommy West is dead on with his remarks. The problem with the Memphis admin is that since they sit in the middle of SEC country they expect SEC level results but will not commit SEC level support and unfortunately they cannot consistently recruit SEC level talent in enough positions to make a huge impact.
Seems like the Nationally ranked University of Houston Cougars, ( and their coach ), are doing a helluva job. This guys had 9 years !!!! Houston's coach has been there 1/3rd of a time. Later buddy. Go coach Division II.
Memphis doesn't deserve a quality man like this coach! It's a dead town, always whining, especially about Nashville. While Nashville could care less about Memphis. Like many other corrupt ass-backwards cities, Memphis has become just what it deserves. A NOTHING, crime ridden rat infested pile!
Tommy hit the nail on the head. There are a lot of schools out there with football teams that they want to succeed but which they are unwilling to help succeed. It takes more than just having a team and scheduling games, you need to commit money and resources to it as well. Coach West was right and I'm glad he said it.
ommy West may not be the best coach in D1 college football but he sure is the most honest. Tiger High is and will always be a joke but at least Tommy tried to make it something better and had more success than most of his predecessors. Those are excuses. Many coaches win and succeed without BCS level facilities or money. It all comes down to coaching. A great coach has the ability to make players better, attract a strong staff, and put together solid game plans. The fans ARE demanding better. It's time for Memphis to spend the money to hire a GREAT coach. The FANS have suffered through 7 mediocre coaches are enough is enough. Like West said, if Memphis won't do that, close it down.
