  • last of the men in hats!!

  • Simply beautiful song from the very best

  • Thanks!!;-))) This I do appreciate...

  • masterpiece

  • The best band in the world bar Pink Floyd!

  • Elbow have actualy saved my life, i was so empty before they came along, i started listening to there music and i got concentrated and now i have a level 2 NVQ in animal care and am starting my own business and i owe a portion of that to Elbows inspirational music, i only wish i could have played it to a 14 year old Tim Hanrahan and skiped all that horrid tennage deppression.

  • i understand everything now

  • This is how to describe perfection in about 5 minutes

  • this song is very spiritual, it makes me think about the meaning of life

  • Anyone over 15 who takes this shiite seriously.... needs to get out more and live and learn.

  • As if a song made me cry..

  • @MarkandJeremy You know you sat there and cried like a baby..Then you played it again and really milked that cry a thon for all it was worth. this song has that effect on people. ( Hands MarkandJeremy a tissue )

  • Tomorrow is the first day of my life and I wonder if I should just 'switch off' and let it pass, as if it's not going to happen. Perhaps I should just sit quietly, still and mute and let them take him from me. My son is all that I want in my life, all that I want to love in my older years, but they are deaf and heartless to his wants. I wish all this were not happening, but it is, and my heart breaks that out of love comes bitterness and lies. Perhaps "switching off" is all that I have left Elli

  • Good to see some people still "get" this kind of music. Those who don't, well, would you ever. This is in some of us and is more than simple "happy" and "sad" this is something else, so much of it.

  • Ask 10 Elbow fans what their favourite song is and you will get 10 different answers. The depth and quality of their music covers such a range of tastes. For me, Scattered Black and Whites stops me, whenever I hear it.

  • We hit it off so well after another visit busizz4me.info

  • this, newborn an small hours by john martyn at my funeral

  • @jabba17 The same thought occurred to me, but be careful to remember that the funeral is more for other people than for you. I don't want to create an atmosphere that will potentially make others more unhappy, and the lyrics to this song...wow. If my husband died, this song may trigger me to commit suicide. Painfully beautiful. Newborn is a lovely choice. John Martyn too? Wow good taste. I saw him live in the front row of a tiny hall when I was about 7yrs.

  • fucking awesome song

  • amazing

  • This is easily one of the most underrated tracks by elbow, and one of the best.

"You, the only sense the world has ever made."

    <3

  • The most evocative song writer I have ever heard. My music tastes vary from the death metal to the jazz singers but no one strikes a nerve quite like the lyricism of Elbow. Switching Off is one of the most brilliant songs I have ever heard.

  • My personal favourite Elbow song. I'm so glad someone uploaded this. My Cast of Thousands is being borrowed by someone and I can't believe how much, after just a week, I want to listen to it.

  • There are few artists that so eloquently create musical atmospheres such as Elbow.

The interwoven artistry of lyric, the instrumental sonic bed and timbre of Guy's voice near a perfection rarely achieved in modern music.

To my ear it is as perfect as much of Pink Floyd's work. Truly impeccable.

  • love this band the key word is band guy garvey isnt the only member of the whole thing

  • Haha, fapping at the start!

  • @blisteredwolf Jerking Off

  • @Raidomso it's the same?

  • @blisteredwolf I meant "Jerking Off" should be the title of the song

  • @Raidomso oh, lol :p

  • They are great. Period.

  • Sloth slowly overtaking me, and quiet and still encompasses my world, I'm so tired now... The cold is gone, even the stupor neglects me now, nihility overcomes and the ringing has subsided. Who am I, who was I, what have I become? A dry husk of a man that never was, or a timid greatness with only fact to carry on my name? So tired... My eye lids are heavy, bearing their weight down upon me, mother, father, I love you... So tired...

  • i love the very subtle bassline in the background

  • does anyone know the time signature for this??

  • Elbow blows my mind for real.. refreshing

  • cant stop*

  • this song really touches my soul and stop listening to it ;_;

  • What an amazing song. I did shed a couple of tears listening to it the first time I must confess lol

  • i'v0 enever heard this elbow song.. this is absolutely beuatiful

  • This song is amazing. About a man who chooses the last scene of his life before he dies. Beautiful.

  • how is it POSSIBLE to write somethings as lyrically and musically beautiful as this?

guy garvey must have been born purely to create works of genius

  • What I like about this song is that it makes you stop for a moment allowing - no, causing you to just relax, calming your mind and freeing you even just for a few minutes from all the thousands of irritating little things that take up so much of your time. It's like a moment of serenity in a storm

  • mooi. ma de wolken zijn een beetje te hyper in verhouding met het liedje, vind ik..

  • randypanhandy referred to a 16 year old getting Elbow's albums. I'm 60 and I've just done that - they haven't all arrived yet so I'm listening to this track for the first time. I made the right choice!

One of the greatest changes in music is the collapse of barriers between generations - my sons like a lot of my stuff, they like a lot of mine. It's great to hear a kid playing something I last heard 35+ years ago. Simon Cowell must hate it when kids make up their own minds - that costs him money!

  • 3:45 haunting but yet it's really beautiful

  • if you were 16yrs old and were given elbow's catalogue of albums. you could probably relate to a third of tracks. and that would feed your heart and head enough to make them your favourite artists for life. you could grow up with them and understand lifes encounters through their songs. if you find them later in life like i did, you quickly realise your life has been played out in song. and alls you needed to do was listen. a sad, comfortable companion they are.

  • Wow...beautifully put my friend.

  • Thank you!...

  • Preach Brother, Preach! ; )

  • @randypanhandy Sometimes music is too sad and life is sometimes too good,X.

  • @randypanhandy absolutely spot on! I found them when I was about 14 and now I'm almost 20 and only growing to love them exponentially every year.

    Perfectly put.

  • @randypanhandy I'm agree with you sometimes elbow's songs make me feel better

  • @randypanhandy I'm so glad I found them at 16. And everything you've said is 100% true.

  • @randypanhandy I saw your comment and felt it necessary to tell you that I'm 16 and was recently given elbows back catalogue as a gift from my dad and you couldnt possibly have summed up the way I feel about them better, for every new emotion theres a track to sum it up and/or help me cope. I've never experienced music before that I could connect with so well.

  • @randypanhandy

i discovered elbow because of ricky gervais

at the same time i discovered

    ryan admas

    and elliot smith

  • @brettkenney You can add Frederik Teige to the list. Ryan, Elliot, Elbow and Fred all know how to write and sing beautiful songs.

  • @Dane66Stew Which artists are you talking about, I would like to hear them? Elliot Smith perhaps? Who are the others?

  • @brettkenney

did ricky gervais mention elbow/like elbow?

  • @jwillchad yes, ricky mentioned that he loved elbow during one of his xfm shows with stephen merchant. not sure which episode. on that show, ricky and stephen would take turns playing their favorite songs. before each song they would talk a bit about why they loved the song they were about the play. ricky's endorsement of elbow was so strong that i was listening to them within minutes.

  • @randypanhandy holy christ man well said. so true.

  • @randypanhandy I am sixteen and just that thing happened to me. i know i have a friend for life... :)

  • @randypanhandy so true, im 17 and your completely right, i applaud you sir

  • @randypanhandy i'm 16 and youre damn right!!! it seems like ive dicovered 2 great bands for my life ahead recently, the other being the natonal!!!

  • @jthorpy07 You just are on the greatest path possible. Great bands to live your life with. I wish when I was your age I had internet and was able to discover bands that in my country no one knows.

  • This is poetry. The opening lines are absolutely defining... the part replayed from a perfect day, and love's first blush. It just goes from early days to later flushes in life. So brilliant. I'm wondering if Garvey slaved over these lyrics.

  • is there an accordion being played on this track?

whatever it is its a beautiful song :-)

  • one of the most beautiful songs ever written

  • i think this song's beautiful!

  • my best elbow song by a long way

  • Quite nice. Like a smoother track from 'Kid A'.

  • i love his voice

    beautifl song<33

  • wow what a video

  • great similarity to radiohead.

  • favorite song of all time

  • Nice work. I love this video. As an Elbow fan, this pays respect to the song, does not detract from it and is quite beautiful in its own right. Cheers, well done.

  • Perfect! beautifull!

  • in the final seconds of the video they should have shown the lighthouse light turn off and played the metallic clanking sound one more time s it did.

  • did you win the mercury award?

  • no, i suppose that does invalidate my opinion doesnt it?

    How many have you won?

  • none, but im not the one trying to second guess a band who did.

  • Zebrahead are musically and lyrically sublime, sorry did i say sublime.... sorry i meant shit.

  • el oh el...

  • maybe the video just means whatever you want it to mean, perhaps the same with the song? For me that often defines a great song anyway, everyone finds their own meaning, just my opinion

  • excuess my ignorence but what is the meaning of this video??

  • its pretty...

  • A beautiful song. Every Elbow song hits a nerve, if it doesn't well ... 7 years ago Newborn got me through the death of my gran. In October at Roundhouse Guy said it was about an old person dying ... but I knew and felt that already (and cried). An amazing songwriter who I truly love (thank you for getting me through). If you don't feel it you never will. His songs about addiction also hit a nerve. Thank you Guy.

  • they played this and screened the video at wembley on saturday. guy explained its about telling the one you love that they will be your last thought, before you die. it strips me of any sense of self, just watching it now - i'm merely a servant of audience again.

  • Stunning piece of music, what an underated band these really are! Stunning, simply stunning!

  • Remarkable art, im touched

  • what an amazing peice of music

  • i love this song.... i remember the first time i hear this son was 4 months aftermy dad past.... sad memories but such a great song...

  • Absolutely breathtaking.

  • yeah agree mate...all their songs produce goosebumps

  • bury me to this song please

  • manimok you have just opened the door

Its a northen thing NO its AN IRISH thing

    DONEGAL AND PROUD Genesis Fan

  • Dear conormilford !

Coming from Austria I don´t know the local details. But I adore this music, wherever

it comes and I hope this sound will spread

    around the world .

  • i'm sorry. did i offend someone? can some on tell me why my comment was bad please. I didn't cuss the band or any of you. all i said was i like this is song but i think they've got better songs - like one day like this and grounds for divorce. i love this song and this band but i prefer elbow's more upbeat stuff. Just coz i said this song isn't amazing doesn't mean that someone should label it a poor comment.

  • Whoever gave your first comment a thumbs down (wasn't me) was only saying they disagree with it, not that your opinion isn't valid.

  • Nothing left to say : after Selling England

by the pound I ´ve waited for along time

but now here are they and I can begin to dream

    again. - wonderful

  • I dont think that anyone else in the history of music has written such a beautiful and more meaningful song. This is a song that truly does leave you speechless and brings you to a stop. You can believe every word, it's completely sincere and just incredibly moving.

  • hmm so nice..

  • good song but no way near their best

  • Hey can you tell me the name of a music video?? it an english band , and in the vid there partying outdoors and the drink out of the moon lol???

  • Nice

  • It's on 'Cast of Thousands'. Good, isn't it? :D

  • yea im thinking of Buying this Album, it's great

  • Go on, buy it. You won't regret it ;)

  • Cool!

  • For those that like this song you may also get a kick out of - (The Cinematic Orchestra - To Build a Home) :)

  • This was their first song at Glasto on the Sunday in The Queens Head, I was totally mesmerised and thought it was the most beautiful song I had ever heard. I'm so glad I made the effort to stay sober enough to hear it :P

  • so bealtiful! elbow is singular!!

  • ;_; puta que linda esta cancion!!

  • Literally discovered Elbow 5 minutes ago. Feel like I did when I heard The Bends by Radiohead.

  • Just found it myself; brought tears to my eyes like when i first heard Coldplay and Sigur Ros

  • Wow..great sound. I was redirected here while watching "The National Live", another freakin amazing band.

  • Gosh. Just saw it right noiw that you sent that to me...

Don't know what to say. It's one of the moments when you better don't say anything...

    and just...

  • i cant believ that only 29000 poeple have seen this video, everybody should har this song, absolute genius

  • Play this at my funeral, Beautiful :,)

  • SO AWESOME ! SO UNIQUE!

    Nauka ... Im thinking of u ...

    You are the only sense...

the world has ever made ...

    miss U !

  • Stop and listen - you'll rarely enjoy a better 5 minutes and six seconds in your life.

  • It seems like no one would watch the video but it is fun to watch. I like how the clouds move when it starts going Dark.

  • I saw Elbow last tuesday at Brixton accademy and they were amazing, their better live than on the computer, this song was so relaxing. ELBOW=INSANE

  • Please, please never ever compare this to Hey Jude, which is one of the worst (overrated) songs written in the history of the world. This is beautiful, meaningful music. Hey Jude is just crap

  • only found out about elbow today and have realized how amaxing they are, buying the album tommorow for sure

  • OMG, that kind of reminded me of Hey Jude by the beatles because it was so hypnotic, atleast the video, I was content to just stare at that light the whole time...

  • Ok, i've only heard 4 elbow songs (Grounds for divorce, forget myself, fallen angel, and obviously, swithcing off) and i think they're all crcking tunes, but i want to hear more. Can any elbow fans help me and reccomend me and album before tommorow (im going cardiff shopping tomorow, perfect opportunity for album purchasing). Cheers much for any reply

  • soldom seen kid(2008) and leaders of the free world(2005) are spot on m8

  • *seldom

  • Thanks a lot man, if a little late. Ended up buying Cast of Thousands and wasnt dissapointed. Cracking Album. Seldom Seen Kid next. thnks for the reply anyway *thumbs up*

  • Get "asleep in the back" instantly theres no looking back after that it's a perfect album they are all amazing albums though

  • i'd never heard of Elbow until today, and im bloody surprised about that as they're amazing. and the lyrics... phwoar. Helluva band.

  • i'd never heard of Elbow until today, and im bloody surprised about that as they're amazing. and the lyrics... phwoar. Helluva band.

  • the song is about having a fantastic day with a loved one and deciding that this moment is the one you will remember when you are about to die(switch off) your very last thought. A quite beautiful love song.why the hell they support muse and snow patrol i will never understand.

  • Muse, my favorite band, and Snow Patrol is alright. This band is awesome but I still like Muse better, I think it's just music of the gods.

  • i always fort it was about euthanasia, 'chosing my final forts' 'switching off with you' plus if you watch the video the lighthouse beacon represents a life support machine, flat lines at the end. what i think anyway.

  • I went to see Elbow tonight and Guy explained this! He said, that he was talking about how you see your life flash before your eyes before you die. So he said that if that's the case, then if you want you can choose the moment you see flash before your eyes last, and it is the moment mentioned in this song.

  • "final thoughts"

How come you can spell lighthouse but not thoughts?

  • Well done. You can grammar-pick an amazing idea without making a single comment on the absolute beauty of this song.

  • golden girl, I was commenting on a user refering to " final forts" I rather than thoughts.

  • This is the most beautiful song I have ever heard. It's true what Leonmpi says- it's about chosing the what will "flash before your eyes" before you die but. It's just so perfect.

  • Apparently, this song is about the theory that if your life flashes before your eyes, you can choose what your final memory will be. So deep & so beautiful.

  • this song goes into my soul and leaves an impression of grace

  • amazing song! the video fits perfect to the mood.

  • Just stunning and heart felt, The whole album "A Cast of Thousands" is a true work of art and is easily one of the best albums in the last 20 years. I'm from Manchester and we've had a lot of bands over the years to be very very proud of and Elbow are up there with the best of them!

  • completely agree!

  • i need her, but i hurt me

  • This track and Powder Blue have a permanent spot on my favorites play list.

  • Fantastic use of the word "elegiac" by the way. I'm going to make it my "Word of the Day" for the next week. Kudos.

  • Did anybody say the lighthouse is Cromer, Norfolk. I know it well (I have painted and photo'd it)

  • Can anybody hear the similarities between them and Gwar?

  • Odd enough, yes. One part Absinthe, one part mescaline, one part 211 Steel Reserve, served at room temperature with an IV push of 10cc of kerosene. Enjoy. . .

  • Awesome! Did you forget the Medellin speedball? Go 70/30 for the bigger picture.

    Thanks!

  • they remind me of coldplay lol

  • what the fuck is possibly comedic about "they remind of coldplay". You don't have to type the word lol after every last pubic hair of decrepid information you people devulge upon the world. On a lighter note what a song.

  • I bet you feel quite intelligent after telling someone off on youtube. Amazing you simply stunned me with your words. But in conclusion i have to say write a book because even then noone will truly give a damn over what you say
