Next time I buy a laptop from Dell.. I'm going to read all of the reviews.. :/ I regret buying this laptop, the build quality sucks and the left hinge keeps detaching from it self.. I have 2 year warranty and 1 year left, I've sent my laptop again and they have fixed it, this is the second time this has happened to me.. :/
I bought my Dell Studio 17 6 months ago and recently, the HDD completely wonked out. The store where I bought it for ordered a new one from Dell and it's been 3 and a half weeks and it still hasn't arrived.
I have a dell studio 17. Within a year, I noticed a problem with the left hinge detaching from it self. I figured that it was just a small problem until the hinge detached further and now the whole left side of the frame is detached from the screen and now that I'm out of warrantee I can't get this fixed. I researched further into this and found out that this problem is common for dell. I was hoping that dell would have some sort of solution for this problem but none has been given.
Guys, Lenovo is a better and more stable computer. They also cost less and their Thinkpads are ruggedized. Check out my video review of a $1600 W510, equivalent in specs to a $3000 Dell M4500. It's on my channel, here:
Dell should hire some of hp or apples designers, I dont own a dell because they are far beyond ugly and probably never will until they start gettingit right. the ports should never be on the back unless is is a charging port or an interesting idea of a dvd drive.
How's the battery holding up on this ? I have a dell studio 1537 and recently, I have decided to keep in plugged in most of the time than going thru the regular cycles of charging/decharging, charging/ decharging etc....Just wanted to know if any 1's doing wht I have started doing...
I have had my Studio 15 1558 for about 2 months now I really like it and would recommend it. The only problem I have is that I got the optional Blu-Ray drive and It plays 1 of my 10 Blu-Rays. I was told that I had to update the Blu-Ray which dell probably should do before they send it but w/e I updated it and now it plays no Blu-Rays and Dell has not helped me at all to fix this problem
the hinge design is a fail....me and my mom have both the studio 15 & 17 and they hinges are falling apart...other then that the computer is good as hell....but still im real pissed with the design....
Dell is good. My sister has a Dell Studio 17 in the dark purple! July 1 and I get the Dell Studio 17 in black inside. Super good and nice laptops. Greatz Timo
i have a dell studio 1735 and the hinge thing broke, so now every time i go to open my laptop the whole screen basicly comes apart. its helf together by tape hahaahah.
A state of mind: any excuse that Dell gives for not allowing a buyer to customize the Studio 17 with a solid state harddrive when their netbooks, XPS 16 and Alienware come optional with solid state HD's is a sorry pathetic excuse! Some of us CAN'T LIVE with a 16" screen yet we want a solid state HD so I guess we have to shop at HP/Toshiba/Acer. And too the XPS 16's monitor is not a true 16" it's actually smaller than 16 inches!
I have a question about my 17" dell 17 [isn't that ironic X D]---
I feel that my graphics card is lacking severely, and I wanted to know which graphics cards my computer is compatible with...
[and I wouldn't mind upgrading my ram while I'm at it, though i will be saving up for a new processor later on, but hey, I'm not made of cash... anyway, can someone help me out with my upgrading dilemmas?]
If you want to sell computers, get someone who knows how to inflect a little...just a wee bit would make people a little more interested. This dude sounds like he wants to take a nap when he talks about these things.
Yes i own the 15 and 17 windows 7 does come with it now. you can go on dells website to customized what you want on it such as a video card. the 15 i use for work cause it is portible. but if you are looking for a desktop replacment the 17 is the way to go. personally i like my 17 better.
Is the 15 and 17 the same...if not which one is better cause im getting a laptop this christmas and i need to find a good lap top around the $800 range.
IF you;re someone that travels alot i would recommend you get the S15 since its smaller and and more portable with a longer lasting battery but if you just sit back and use up more computer power get the S17 with the bigger/easier to see screen, DDR3 memory and such so its more powerful but takes a little bit more of battery life. =)
They can do same processors and same RAM, though the 17 can do a better graphics card, double hard drives, and is heavier, bigger screen and keyboard with number pad.
my dell studio 15 has recently been getting overheating issues...it's shutdown 2x so far due to overheating .. and its fan has been running crazy .. anyone know how to fix it?
@HowDoYouMake more specifically Dell uses reliable companies when putting computers together. Dell just puts the computer together and thankfully doesnt cheap out on quality materials
If you didn't personally go in and customize your laptop, the system you chose might not have included that feature. I just ordered my 1555 the other day and it will have the backlit keyboard.
dell aftersale support is pathetic the support you get is non after you purchase.....definately would not recommend.....bcoz i recently bought one greatest mistake i should've gone with sony or hp......
I am about to buy a studio 17 (I think) been tossing up between the 15 and the 17. Do you know if I can get Window's 7 on the 17. Cause looking at the Australian Dell web site it seems to come with the 15 and "new 17". Is the new 17 worth an extra 300 bucks?
I've seen different names for the green version of this laptop on the internet, but on the canadian ordering site where i ordered from there was only the option for spring green. Is Spring Green any different from Lime Green or Neon Green?
I think that the studio17 looks as big as the old inspiron 1520. Dell really shaved alot of weight off of the studio laptops....They dont look that big in person...I have a studio 17 which cost me $2,000, with 8 Gb RAM and intel core 2 duo T9550 @ 2.66 GHz....it looks much smaller than my Inspiron 1720.
i would get 17 as my kids can take it into there room to do coursework ect, plus it`s still a laptop so more mobile than desktop and at same time your getting desktop size screen and as 80% of the time it's around the house it will be plugged in via adapter.
Ordered mine about 5 days ago and it has every thing I need 4 gigs ram 250 hardrive no backlit keyboard I didn't want it on my old laptop I was in the dark a lot and the shine of the screen made it easy to see the keyboard. Over all it cost only about $1,300.
dell has since gotten rid of the troublesome touch sensitive media panel and incorporated the media buttons into the f buttons on the top of the keyboard
i dont know if i should get the 15in or 17in, im going to college in august, and it seems like the 17 will be too big. Can anybody give me some advice please or any suggestion?
personally I would get the 15, which I actually plan on getting because its smaller and a bit more portable and the battery last a tad longer than the 17.
here in the netherlands support is great :).. my motherboard died.. 3 months after the warrenty.. I called and the next morning a mechanic was sitting in my living room replacing my motherboard...
Ive recently bault a dell studio 15 laptop as i needed one for collage, and iv got it with a 512 MB ati Mobility Radeon HD 4570,and i know that it can play games like Fear,COD 4,Doom 3,and Prey with ease, but I was wandering how my graphics card would go up against a game such as assassins creed.
i have a $1,038 dollar dell and it works miracles.. maybe your warranty expired man. or some thing, my studio 15 is perfect. what defects does your studio have?
I cant wait to get it!! But beware.. DELL has pushed back my shipping date 3 TIMES since i ordered it on april 22nd. now it says it ships june 5th!! the comp would be awesome if i ever get it. I wanted it custom so i bought from the site. Expect a MUCH longer wait than the site tells you right off. I am only writing this because the will not help me.. Don't seek out only the good info on the shipping. this is happening to me right now! march 20 2009
i oreder mines on january 15, and they said ill get it. on the 23rd. turns out i got it on the 20th early in the morning, i was like (@_@) bout to kiss the mail man in the cheek man. i got mad happy there
so far i've seen up to 512mb ati radeon hd card on it. but you may have to call and ask for it since the internet configuration site won't show teh 512 card. i'm about to order one and see if they can add that good card.
just got a dell studio 15 couple of weeks bak.jet black.damn cheap when compared with asus,hp and others.and lighthing fast.absolutely reliable.the great thing is keyboard, smooth as Kate Winslet, and Speakers.....good job Dell.
The studio 15 is freakin amazing. The best laptop I could ever ask for. The cool thing is that if you order a 9 cell battery for it, the 9 cell battery will give it a lift in the back for some airflow instead of a stub sticking out. Probably the only thing I hate about it is dual-booting XP and Vista. XP is not entirely compatible with the SATA used. But it can still run if on IDE mode. BUY THIS!!! THESE WINDOWS PLASTIC BOXES!!! IT'S AMAZING!!!
Arrives in the post in the next week or so. I'll give some feed back when it arrives. I'm comtemplating buying a nvidia graphics express card - should operate around the same efficiency as one inbuilt right?
What I hate most about these Windoze plastic boxes are those much too bright blue LEDs around the topcase. Ever used those plastic things in the dark? They are really annoying.
Second are the stickers you find on them. Four or five are minimum.
Get a MacBook/Pro and e happy with the worlds best OS and no friggin' lighs which burn your eyes.
First of all, Macs are also made of plastic in case you didn't know already. Secondly, Macs are freakin expensive and since the economy is bad, Mac might not be the way to go currently. Lastly, the Dell Studio, in fact, can run OS X as evident from this video: watch?v=DHEgmOsi_vk
I have Dell XPS 1530, I am in Japan and will say, customer service is not trust worthy. Can you believe while placing order and talking to one foreign representative where Dell manufacture computers, she did not agree if I can add stronger processor by paying more because one day had passed after placing order.
No doubt Dell computer could be best they must think about people talking with customers. Improve customer services.
Got me a Studio 17, P8600 (2.40GHz), 4 Gigs of ram, Dual 320 SATA hard drives, Radeon HD 3650 though I wish I could have got a 512 in it. :( 9 Cell Battery, X-Fi Xtreme Sound Card, Backlite keyboard, And finger print. I use it for Traktor Pro. works great!
DONT BUY, it's made in China, it's made of cheap plastic, and when i wanted to return, I had to deal with rude aftersale Indians, and they CHARGED me %15 RE-STOCKING FEE
im just about to order either a studio 15 P8600 (2.40Ghz, 3MB, 1066MHz) with the 256MB ATI Mobility RADEON HD 3450, OR an XPS 1530 with a T6400 (2.0GHz,2MB,800MHz FSB) with an NVIDIA GeForce Go 8600M GT with 256MB, i cant decide any help guys.....
if your into games...the 8600 gt would be the better choice. The ATI radeon is mainly for video playback and such, not games. Depends on what you want.
hey guys i heared these have 1-2 hrs life for 6 cell .. this is bad .. but i chat with them ont he 4th of march and said they will last min of 3-4 hrs .. sum1 tell me if it will last min 3 hrs ? or dell just tryna sell their product
Something everyone should know: If you order graphite gray with blue trim, the blue trim is much darker than the picture shows, and appears black, unless you shine a light on it.
Is the dell studio 17 laptop good for gaming like games like Crysis and battelfield 2142. And if it is good will it play on high with good fps? Also the dell studio 17 is it good for school and wi fi? Also i am spending 1300 for it do you think its worth it??? please message me back ASAP!!!!! all help is needed.
I have the dell studio 17, i dont actually know if it is good for gaming as i only have games with low system requirments. Yeah its good for school, and runing on wireless networks, otherwise how am i writing this message.
Before you go out and buy this laptop, make sure it fits the system requirements for the games you want to play, you dont want to pay all that money to find out u cant play ur games.
I don't know what you're talking about Chaz... I bought a Studio 15 with the same 2.4 GHz processor as the $1600.00 MacBook, more RAM, and the upgraded Video Card and it was still well under $1,000.00...
After adding the essential optional extras to this laptop its nearly as expensive as the white macbook! More expensive if you can get apple student discount. Thats funny considering most people won't get a mac because they are too expensive. But around the same price as a middle of the road DELL running vista. Surly that means macbook is the way to go? At least IMO.
Not true at all. I priced a Studio out and it is $1,300 and a Mac that is comparable to that is almost $2,500. Also, dont forget that overall Macs are fur inferior to PC's and not worth the money at all. imo.
I ordered mine on 11/28/08 and was told that the date it would possibly be shipped would be 12/10/08, and set to arrive between 12/14/08 - 12/17/08. I was a little disappointed that they don't mention that up front before I paid for it. Oh well, I'll be patient.
How come my Studio boots up when I press the dell media direct button? wast it supposed to work without booting the laptop?

i dont know if i should get the 15in or 17in, im going to college in august, and it seems like the 17 will be too big. Can anybody give me some advice please or any suggestion?
Chris385261 2 years ago
I would recommend the 15. 17in is a bit big to carry around campus.

15 has more battery
so more mobile
misteraznboy 2 years ago
personally I would get the 15, which I actually plan on getting because its smaller and a bit more portable and the battery last a tad longer than the 17.

The speakers on those laptops suck as hard as Dell's quality control and tech support.
Spend your money on anything but a Dell.

Hi guys
Ive recently bault a dell studio 15 laptop as i needed one for collage, and iv got it with a 512 MB ati Mobility Radeon HD 4570,and i know that it can play games like Fear,COD 4,Doom 3,and Prey with ease, but I was wandering how my graphics card would go up against a game such as assassins creed.

Dell computers are terrible pieces of crap. I have a defective studio and dell refuses to fix it despite several 'send ins' and phone calls.
1000$ down the tubes, thanks dell. I'll never buy from you again, and i'll spread the word about your terrible computers.

Kaziboi94soton 2 years ago 3
The studio 15 is freakin amazing. The best laptop I could ever ask for. The cool thing is that if you order a 9 cell battery for it, the 9 cell battery will give it a lift in the back for some airflow instead of a stub sticking out. Probably the only thing I hate about it is dual-booting XP and Vista. XP is not entirely compatible with the SATA used. But it can still run if on IDE mode. BUY THIS!!! THESE WINDOWS PLASTIC BOXES!!! IT'S AMAZING!!!
P.S. MAC OS X can actually run on it too.

I recently purchased a Dell Studio 17 MV Laptop.
$4,300 NZD
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66Ghz 6MB Cache, 1066MHz FSB.
Duel 500GB Hard Drives
Sound Blaster X-Fi MB
8GB of DDR2 Ram 1024Mhz
Slot Load fixed blue-ray BD-ROM / DVD +/- RW Combo Drive
256MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650
Arrives in the post in the next week or so. I'll give some feed back when it arrives. I'm comtemplating buying a nvidia graphics express card - should operate around the same efficiency as one inbuilt right?

What I hate most about these Windoze plastic boxes are those much too bright blue LEDs around the topcase. Ever used those plastic things in the dark? They are really annoying.
Second are the stickers you find on them. Four or five are minimum.
Get a MacBook/Pro and e happy with the worlds best OS and no friggin' lighs which burn your eyes.
computerschreck 2 years ago

Improve customer services.

im just about to order either a studio 15 P8600 (2.40Ghz, 3MB, 1066MHz) with the 256MB ATI Mobility RADEON HD 3450, OR an XPS 1530 with a T6400 (2.0GHz,2MB,800MHz FSB) with an NVIDIA GeForce Go 8600M GT with 256MB, i cant decide any help guys.....
mykul062 2 years ago
if your into games...the 8600 gt would be the better choice. The ATI radeon is mainly for video playback and such, not games. Depends on what you want.
krayz541 2 years ago
I'd go for the 1530 if you plan to do any gaming as the 8600GT is considerably faster than the HD3450.
If you don't game and just do media like movies, go for the Studio as it has enough power to do 1080p HD using the HDMI.
Also I'm in a similar situation as I can't deicde between the Studio 17 (HD 3650) and the Vostro 1500 (8600 GT)

Blankwarrior 2 years ago
I have the dell studio 17, i dont actually know if it is good for gaming as i only have games with low system requirments. Yeah its good for school, and runing on wireless networks, otherwise how am i writing this message.
Before you go out and buy this laptop, make sure it fits the system requirements for the games you want to play, you dont want to pay all that money to find out u cant play ur games.
Anyway are you paying $1300 or £1300?
I got mine from currys for christmas :D

I don't know what you're talking about Chaz... I bought a Studio 15 with the same 2.4 GHz processor as the $1600.00 MacBook, more RAM, and the upgraded Video Card and it was still well under $1,000.00...
TopThrillSteve 2 years ago 2
After adding the essential optional extras to this laptop its nearly as expensive as the white macbook! More expensive if you can get apple student discount. Thats funny considering most people won't get a mac because they are too expensive. But around the same price as a middle of the road DELL running vista. Surly that means macbook is the way to go? At least IMO.
chaz4510 2 years ago
Not true at all. I priced a Studio out and it is $1,300 and a Mac that is comparable to that is almost $2,500. Also, dont forget that overall Macs are fur inferior to PC's and not worth the money at all. imo.
