  • Looks quite good, but I dont think the attack ritual is quite realistic.

  • nice and fairly realistic. back away the entire time, swing as hard as possible, pray you hit their hand. odds are they will protect their weapon and catch you on your miss. distance, barrier, time... best protection from a knife. gun beats knife at 20 feet with training. Legalize concealed carry for law abiding citizens. what does the 2nd amendment say?

  • Wow this is perfect ! so realistic ! i always carry a pair of Nunchuks and other assorted weaponry to counter knife wielding assailants when I'm on a date with my girlfriend.

  • lmao, wtf? (damn, thoz dudes in the vid are either OBESE or OLD--sumtyms both)

  • What if he has a gun?

  • this is so absolutely useless!! first of all not everyone carries a swatty buoy thingy around them, AND I FUCKIN GUARANTEE SWINGING IT AT THEM WILLY KNOW WILL NOT STOP HIM FROM A FORWARD PROGRESS TOWARDS YOU AND YOU WILL BE SO VULNDERABLE TO A KNIFE IN YOUR GUT THINKING THIS BULLSHIT WILL WORK

  • what if you don't have a stick?

  • the best self defense - run away as fast as you can!

  • No offense, but if you work drills like this too much, it is what will happen on the street. In a real life situation, getting your head bashed in and/or begging for mercy won't benefit you at all. You really should never leave your attacker with the weapon, and actually do something to disable them. Just some advice...

  • :-/

  • lol @ 0:39... "Whats in your hand"?

  • fuck they are crazy !

  • this is like monkey training defense right? They are crazy as fuck ..

  • Mr. Kipp, no need to keep responding to these "experts". Their narrowmindedness and lack of research (simply the rest of this comment thread would be enough for most) exposes their ignorance. One drill won't make anyone learn all of it. why are there so may playa hata's. take it for what it is. the man already said exactly what he tried to (and clearly did) accomplish. later

  • What is this crap?

  • ok suposse ur attacker is JASON VOORHIES and ur so fuckin scarred that its him and u freeze up then he slices ur fuckin head off! hahaha

  • You fail to grasp the concept of the drill. Most people freeze when a weapon appears. Adrenal stress response training is about how to defeat the flight or freeze response. This is just one simple drill we use to do this quite effectively and consistently.

  • you are terribly mistaken. none of this garbage would help you against an attacker wielding a blade. if you have that much room why the hell are you walking in circles? If someone pulls a knife, unless you are in a small room or a corner you should run. Not just stand there and and try to hit him with a stick. if he wants you bad enough, your dead. At very least take one or two hits and RUN.

  • Well, i understand some what on what you mean by trying to train people so they won't freeze.

I noticed sticks always seemed to attack the knife hand first, usually enough force to make em drop it or simply break the radius or ulna. But, who carries around a stick unless you are a cop?

  • It is probably not legal to carry a stick in most plces. But there is often something we can use instead. Rolled up newspaper, magazine, umbrella, belt, shoe, and more things have been used effectively. Man is the great tool user and if you can get something in your hand to fight with its a good way to go!

  • I meant "fine-motor control" and not "gross-motor control" ofcourse. The large muscles get stronger in adrenal rush.

  • This drill is the very first scenario in the course. It's not about technique. It's just meant to be an introduction to adrenal stress. "Keyboard warriors" will never understand this clip unless they experience something similar. Personally I managed to fall down on my face (literally), just because of loss of gross-motor muscle control. But you will eventually learn how to "feel the fear, and do it anyway". In a strange way it becomes fun.

  • It's always interesting to see that the most ignorant people (commenting) gravitates toward the two basic categories I learned about in philosophy class: 1. Someone don't care. 2. Someone think they know everything.

I feel that the more aggressive and "black and white" someone writes, the lower the self-esteem/self-worth. It's about compensating for something else.

  • What is the point of that? That defense is garbage. The attacks are unrealistic, not to mention the situation. If anything that is drilling bad habits.

  • Very effective training method to have the rest of the class intensely yell when the defense is initated. This is surface through the persons response and strength when used in a real situation. I'm sure this is just one of the steps in the class.

  • I saw your website...Basically, you got a black belt in Karate and your brother beat you up when growing up so now you are an expert on adrenalin and self defense? Are you a doctor too? My brother beat me up before too...I guess now I'm an expert too and can teach, right?

If you want a real adrenalin rush, I suggest you come to a Dog Brother's Gathering for some full contact stick fighting...Let's see how long you last.

  • You might want to try some Valium dude. Who are you really fighting against?

And say Hi to Crafty Dog, I stayed at his house for a weekend long ago during his camp with my buddy Peyton Quinn. Its great that he is still in it!

  • Not a martial arts class? So, is it a cursing class? Where did you become and "Adrenalin rush" expert? I am a 18 year veteran of the U.S. Army. I have served two tours in Iraq and 2 in Kosovo.

This is the stupidest combat training I have ever seen. It's easy to see that none of your guys on this video have any skill

  • Really stupid!

A bunch of idiots cursing at each other ..clumsy guys with no technique...This is an acting class, not a martial arts class...

  • No it is not a martial arts class Wombat. Thanks for noticing the crucial difference.

  • This is all planed!

  • Do you mean planned? If so, of course it is. The drill has a specific goal in mind, to defang the snake and use the adrenal rush positively.

  • Guys, the concept is to help the students learn to flip the adrenal switch into go for it power, where most people freeze. This drill is just one extrapolation of this concept based traing vs technique based.

  • you learn to overcome freeze response by ingraining responses to real world scenarios, typically by starting very very slowly (step function) then increasing speed over time. The freeze response is defeated via repetition. In golf, they call it 'muscle memory'. the other underlooked training aid is pain. it is cute to practice in a vacuum, but in the real world it hurts to get hit/stabbed. no need for damage, but w/o understanding it will feel, they will likely be shocked by first whack.

  • 1. who the crap is walking around with a big stick/baton?

    2. if you have the big stick, why would you wait to strike someone who has pulled a knife? It is already illegal and you have the right to defend. either attack first or run.

  • Agreed...If u have the big stick, you've already one, cause the stick is a more effective weapon than the knife, so it's kind of dumb

  • Another great clip Bill. The students looked good.

  • yeah nice try but you dindt convinced me. i still prefer to grab a hand with a knife and break a nose with an elbow...

  • Nothing wrong with that strategy as long as you can pull it off. Elbows are my personal fave. Be safe my friend...

  • cheers...V

  • awesome using the figure eight strike almost text book for a gross motor adrenaline drill. onceagain proving you dont need a million techniques to protect yourself.oh i had a boxcutter pulled on me last weekend and i thought about your youtube stuff as i threw a milkcrate at the guy lol

  • I like the way you think...simple techniques do work best in a fight...using that milkcrate was a good example of "monkey-style" kung-fu vs. knife attack: picking up any "sh*t" that comes to your hand & throwing it at the guy while you beat a tactical retreat. LOL

  • im researching the legalities of pre emptive striking and trying to find out how good i would fare in court seeing as my background if i struck first in an altercation any thoughts?

  • Of course a pre-emptive strike is the best defense. But it must be justified and defensible in a court of law, taking in to acct all the variables of the particular situation. But better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6!

  • why thanks for the advice, living in nyc you pay heavy for assault cases but a trip to the judge is better than a trip to the morgue

  • what is the technic? scream as loud as posible?? shit...

  • no he is doing something similar to the ocho cho pattern taught in arnis its a good technique actually and could totally work in such a situation. now for you, the best step would be first render the hand useless then the head

  • Yes...DEFANG THE SNAKE! The pattern of forehand strike angle 1 & backhand strike angle 2 IS taught to police officers...I am a certified ASP-tactical baton instructor. SIMPLE/ GROSS MOTOR techniques are easier to recall/execute under adrenal stress! Nice videos/ good comments by those who understand what is going on here!

  • Actually, yes. Yelling breaks the freeze response that gets most people in trouble in adrenal stress situations. BK

  • WTF!!??

  • Everytime I'm suprised that there are people who post a comment without actually knowing what is all about. In my opinion FAST defense is one of the best teaching methods around when it comes to reality based training. This drill is not actually about teaching defensive skills, but to experience the influence of stress and the application of gross motor skills For that it's an amazing drill.

  • there is no crowd cheering you on in a real fight. the fat guy can try losing 150 pounds, that might increase his chances of survival in a real fight

  • Actually, FAST graduates have reported hearing the cheers from their class in their subconscious mind during a real life assault, and it fired them up to fight harder.

  • you stupid people before you make a comment find out who Bill Kipp is then comment on his work.

Bill Kipp you are a living legend.

Keep up the good work and open the eyes of people towards self-protection.

  • You have got to be fucking kidding me. Your students are all going to die from horrible stab wounds unless you put some thought into your self defense.

  • totally bullshit

  • YES THIS SHOULD BE THE WAY TO TRAIN. Full speed ,full power strikes and attacks. If you have a stick a simple figure of eight strike to the attacking hand is all you need to do to shield yourself. Better if you do some kicks to the groin too. I give this video a 10

  • This drill works well to show how easily the adrenal rush is elicited, and the tunnel vison, auditory exclusion, and loss of fine motor control.
