i'm in the industry and here's the deal. 90 percent of customers are just fine, even if they don't leave a good tip! it's that 10 percent that are rude, or high maintenence and leave a shitty tip. the tip is like a grading system, and if you get a shitty tip for no reason it really makes you feel like shit. it's like someone doing their job just as they're supposed to and your boss telling you that you suck. how would you feel?

Sweetheart, I totally feel you. EVERYTHING you have said. Seriously and contrary to what some of the other people have posted- not all servers are are uneducated. Some of us have children, and have to work certain hours so that we are able to care for our kids, some of us are working to pay for our education. I am tired of people talking to me like I am not human and like I am stupid, I am quite intelligent, hard working, tolerant, and respectful. We deserve respect too.

This gal sounds just like my stepdaughter, who is 30 and has been waiting tables her whole life. I think it takes a very special, very *tolerant* person to be a server and keep a positive attitude, especially when you're trapped in the profession. The solution is to go to college when you have the chance, and give yourself other options. By the way, after having servers in the family, I am now a better tipper.

I so agree with everything you have had to say. I work in a fast paced place and get stretched pretty thin where I work at. I HATE when you are the only server with 200 customers in your area and there is always at least one asshole that thinks they are more important than the other 199 people in the place. i'm in the industry and here's the deal. 90 percent of customers are just fine, even if they don't leave a good tip! it's that 10 percent that are rude, or high maintenence and leave a shitty tip. the tip is like a grading system, and if you get a shitty tip for no reason it really makes you feel like shit. it's like someone doing their job just as they're supposed to and your boss telling you that you suck. how would you feel?

I'm not unsympathetic to what servers go through. I think the fact that their employers get away with paying them slave wages is contemptible. It's not fair at all. But I see a lot of entitlement on these rants, which isn't very appealing.
I think we need a better system, where customers aren't guilted into subsidizing the restaurant's waitstaff. It really is lose-lose for everyone but the restaurant owner.
