What I like so much about this video is that, it's not just how Steve plays, but also how they managed to compose with the violins, rhythm guitar, drums and bass. I just get goosebumps after 1:50.
My new fave Vai track. It starts off with the usual soloing over chords but..then it develops into something much better than that,Vai proves with this that he is not just a selfish flashy player but plays for the song, and other band members.I love the attitude behind this song.Vai giving the band a chance to shine.
this is just....awww.....very wonderfully written...great piece indeed....this is the 3rd acoustic song that i've ever heard from Mr.Wild himself,Steve Vai,next to Sisters and All about eve here....Vai is a very gifted musician...never thought that he could have good sound acoustics too...the music is very relaxing.i love the flow of the notes here.cheers to the other 2 stringers, aside from dave wiener, ann and alex just rocks.
Well. This acoustic thing he has going is actually amazing. I can't blame any of you though for not hearing why this is amazing. Most of us are not musically gifted enough to hear the transitions and harmonics he has going. For the select few that can hear it tho, it sounds truthfully amazing. Plus if your used to his electric playing, this is different sounding, but why hate change? Get off the mainstream crap and listen to real music. Unless you compose something better to show, don't hate
@xDSxArcher although i love this piece, saying "most of us are not musically gifted enough to hear the transitions and harmonics" is not only really pretentious, but also a load of bs. Everyone has different musical tastes; learn to respect them.
@ChetZenor I don't have anything against other peoples tastes. And that wasn't directed at people who are only listening to mainstream music. That comment was directed at people who dis Steve and say he should stay on the electric guitar. As far as that comment goes, how is it bs? Because as far as I know, most people don't understand the theory behind this. The transitions you hear in this are set in a way that it fits. Some people would listen to it and say it's crap due to the odd chord/notes
@xDSxArcher i most true that most people don't understand the theory behind it, but the part that bugs me is that you say "most of us are not musically gifed enough to hear why this is amazing". It just sounded to me like you had some kind of inherent sense of superiority to other listeners, but thats just what i got out of it.
@ChetZenor i should have used better words than that. Thus is my mistake, I did intend to mean that if people are hear to solely listen to the music, one may not enjoy this work as people have demonstrated below. And wouldn't comprehend why current parts sound "off" compared to the rest of the song (used to mainstream). When I wrote that comment, I didn't mean to sound like a musical know it all bitch. It just sounded right in my own head at the time than I forgot about it till u commented.
I actually completely agree with your original statement. It's true- people who listen to purely mainstream music do shut a lot of 'musical doors'. My friends listen to mainly mainstream stuff, and they simply don't get anything that has a slightly odd timing or interesting chord progression- that stuff being what I listen too, i.e Steve Vai- Dream Theater etc.
Sure you, could have phrased it nicer but you were honest, and there really are people who cant grasp this kind of stuff.
@StevieVaibanez yes, but music that people listen isn't a "gift" its a choice, and that is the point i was trying to make. This music is more complex, but many people start off listening to simpler music, and then transfer over and learn musical theory, and get into more unique progressions and so on.
@xDSxArcher Well that was the most pompous comment I've read in a while. You can't blame us for hearing why it's amazing? Thanks awfully, it must be hard for you from up there on that horse. Presumably you mean harmonies? Not only is this harmonically simpler than lots of his music - he spends most of the track jamming over the same bass note - its harmonies are far easier to comprehend than those found in even the simplest jazz. Oh, and for the record, I'm not hating on Vai, I'm hating on you.
@db1each Wow. THANK YOU for making my point! You may have misunderstood my intentions here. But for the record, you've proven me wrong. Someone else does understand this song for it's complexity (not much). But there it is... less is more in music (98% of the time). and the fact that something so amazing can come from something so simple... well, yeah. The point is, people don't understand it. You can hate me all you want, but at the end of the day kiddo, life goes on. Thanks!
@xDSxArcher Okay, while there may not be much complexity to the song, there clearly is an awful lot to both of your comments as I now have no idea what you're talking about.
@db1each If you continue reading y replies, you'll notice in the one, that I said I could have said it differently. If you can't grasp this yourself, than please don't reply. :) Thanks!
@db1each Actually, this song is so beautiful that pretentious me didn't even notice that this piece is simple. My tears of joy didn't stop just because it isn't as complicated as "Love Secrets". When music is this beautiful, even musicians don't notice how simple or complicated it is, so I think you guys are missing the point
@TomRoumanas It would sound good on an electric guitar with Vai's usual pickup configuration, as long as he uses the clean channel; no distortion. However, you are incorrect: this song probably uses exactly the same guitar he used 11 years earlier in the studio; this song WAS intended to be acoustic
@Paolo8772 thats exactly what i was saying... by `i dont think so` i meant i dont think its meant for the electric guitar because BJrok made a stupid comment saying he should stick to playing the electric guitar because thats all hes good for. I find his accoustic songs and playing rather genius.
This is not just rock music, this is modern music at its BEST!
