If noone believed the story, if there were no longer a place for miracles in the world, if every truth were henceforth uncovered in stale laboratory conditions, if a single consciousness no longer had any place in truth, I think that would be sad. God wasn't angry that they were building a big tower, it was WHY they were building that big tower. If you go back and read it the verses actually say the tower is only part of the construction. It was supposed to be at the center of a city. The goal of building one great city was to keep people from having to spread out over the world (as God commanded). If, for a moment, you conceed that there is a God then why would this be such a far reaching story?

The book of Genesis is basically a series of ancient writings relating to Jewish history from 4,500 BC thrown in as a beginning. Almost every argument against the bible is from the first 20 pages of a 1000+ page book (adam + eve, tower of babel, noah, soddom and Gomorra, Joseph, etc).

The thing about the bible (or at least the 1st testament) is that we thought alot of it was completely made up, and then we found out a significant amount of it is either true or at least plausible. Totally agree. I've always said that the Tower of Babel story was one of the most incredibly deep stories in the whole pantheon of Bronze-Age desert mythology. Mostly because of the deeper implications if you read it, as early church fathers like Marcion did, with the idea that Yahweh was actually an evil, spiteful character, doing his best to cutail humanity. Also, the implication of the story is, basically, that if humanity were ever to get over their differences, they could rival GOD HIMSELF.
@bromordra More like Iron Age. i don't think that Babel myth can be dated that early. More like 600BC when they fabricated the myth at Babylon during or after the exile. They probably used the old Akkadian texts to form their story. There is an old Akkadian text which speaks of a tower which Enki or one of the other gods did not like humans to build. I am only vaguely familar with the text, but there are parallels.

God wasn't angry that they were building a big tower, it was WHY they were building that big tower. If you go back and read it the verses actually say the tower is only part of the construction. It was supposed to be at the center of a city. The goal of building one great city was to keep people from having to spread out over the world (as God commanded). If, for a moment, you conceed that there is a God then why would this be such a far reaching story?

The book of Genesis is basically a series of ancient writings relating to Jewish history from 4,500 BC thrown in as a beginning. The thing people often forget about the bible is that most of the early narative is more or less proven to be, at least somewhat, true. Im not talking about Jesus healing leppers and risinf from the dead and all that shit. But many of the cities of the bible have been excavated. Many tomes of the bible have been found. Many events of the bible have been confirmed by other cultures writen records (egypt, persia, mesopotamia). I tried to explain this to someone the other day, and she wouldnt give

For example take the NT, the existence of Jesus of Nazareth, the Crucifixion and death of Jesus of Nazareth are historical. These realities in the NT, are very well established in Ancient historical scholarship as well as NT scholarship.

Totally agree. I've always said that the Tower of Babel story was one of the most incredibly deep stories in the whole pantheon of Bronze-Age desert mythology. Mostly because of the deeper implications if you read it, as early church fathers like Marcion did, with the idea that Yahweh was actually an evil, spiteful character, doing his best to cutail humanity. Also, the implication of the story is, basically, that if humanity were ever to get over their differences, they could rival GOD HIMSELF.

@bromordra More like Iron Age. i don't think that Babel myth can be dated that early. More like 600BC when they fabricated the myth at Babylon during or after the exile. They probably used the old Akkadian texts to form their story. There is an old Akkadian text which speaks of a tower which Enki or one of the other gods did not like humans to build. I am only vaguely familar with the text, but there are parallels.

I try to understand the bible in a non-literal contextual sense usually, because if it all happened exactly as it's written that would be the most retarded thing ever. I'm a christian but I also like to look at things a bit scientifically and know there's a scientific explanation to pretty much everything.

I agree with you sir. However, I am a christian breaking out of the christian shell and soaking up more atheism because it actually makes sense. NOW, I think to hate on christians as a whole is a little pointless and unfair. Like, christians mostly want to 1. Be better people 2. Do what is right 3. Learn the truth. Now, the "truth" is only what we're told since birth, what is "right" is the "truth", we can become better people through the "truth" but it's unnecessary

1.Atheism is NOT a religion.
2.Condemnation of atheists, goes AGAINST the religion anyway.
3.Telling someone to "go and read the bible!" is fucking pointless, because clearly, if you're so stupid that you can't come up with a valid argument other than an imperative that wouldn't prove anything to that person, I really doubt you understand The Bible yourself, and therefore have no right to demand that they do it, when, obviously, you need to do it too.
