I work at channel 5/9 now for 40 years and I remember how the station would pay out serious bucks for a new Station ID look periodically. I guess they thought that somehow made them look fresh and more modern, but for me, I preferred sticking with a classic look and having an identity and trade mark everyone will know and associate with over time. I always wondered if their expense in this promotional area was ever actually rewarded with improved advertising rates.
WABD (then WNEW, now WNYW) in New York and WTTG in Washington was one of the first and the last stations of Dumont Television Network then the two are became Metromedia-onwed stations and they now FOX-onwed stations.

When I was 13, I visited that studio to see a live talk/variety show SATURDAY MORNING LIVE hosted by Gene Rayburn. Ed Ladd announced "FROM NEW YORK! LIVE! IT'S SATURDAY MORNING! AND HERE'S THE STAR OF OUR SHOW, GENE RAYBURN!"
I remember channel 5 WNEW seemed to have more "Please stand by" interuptions than other stations. That seemed to go away after they became WNYW and part of Fox.
Yeah, I remember that too. The funny thing is that in those rare instances when they do have technical problems, they play the exact same elevator music bumper and voice saying, We are experiencing technical difficulties please stand by."
One such example occured in the summer of 1998...due to probs w/the national feed during a network airing of The Simpsons, they ran an old-style telop slide for a little while, then switched to a vintage Movietone newsreel (in Boston, they aired a rerun of Montel Williams from earlier in the wk). Of course, these kinds of problems are extremely rare nowadays...they were more commonplace in the 70s and 80s.

What I always loved about the "tech difficulty" slushy music is that is was supposed to be calming for the viewer. But you can still sense behind the scenes, people are probably screaming at the tops of their lungs, shouting obscenities, and bursting blood vessels.
There used to be a video on here that had the techincal difficulties graphic while airing "Saturday Night Fever", with music playing and the voice-over saying, "We are experiencing operating difficulties, etc."
Would anybody know name of that particular song that played during the tech. difficulty graphic? It was a disco like song. I am looking for a clean version of it.
If nobody has an idea what I am talking about, please PM me, and I'll give you a wav of it.
and before that, they were sharing the airwaves with WNBC-4 when WNYW was WX2WV[an experimental station] in the 1950's they moved to 205 E.67th Street[where they are now]
ajbalfour, check out tvnewsman, he has what I think you were looking for "The choice is channel 5, Metromedia, New York, FIVE!". jingle. I remember that this was the only channel to see reruns of the Six Million Dollar Man in New York during the 70's and The Monkees after school. They also had this weird mad scientist show in the afternoons too, can't remember the name though, anyways, hopes this helps.
Serving the Tri-State Area?!
Isn't that where Phineas and Ferb live? :P

When I was 13, I once dreamed that I made up my own slogan saying
"Move over 11 Alive! My choice is Channel 5!"
I also went to that studio in July of 1983. I was there to see a live variety lifestyle talk show named SATURDAY MORNING LIVE.
Gene Rayburn was the host. Ed Ladd was the announcer.

Yeah, those days are gone, courtesy of corporate greed.

There was another older version of this, sung, "The choice is channel 5, Metromedia, New York, FIVE!".
I was looking for that one which I remember from the late '70s, unfortunately, this isn't it. :(
ajbalfour 5 years ago
I'm pretty sure it was posted here at one time, but it must have been taken down. :(
