  • How does this compare to the McChanson version? Pro's & Con's? Thanks

  • @djtrouserfunk The McChanson is a 5F1 Champ clone, the Ceriatone is a 5E3 Tweed Deluxe clone. The 5E3 has a tone stack, 4 inputs , 2 vols, 12w via 2x 6V6, a 12AY7 + 12AX7 preamp and 5Y3 rectifier. The 5F1 has 4W via 1x 6V6, 1x 12AX7 and 6X4 rectifier, no tone stack, 1 input and 1 volume. The 5F1 is a small sweet amp, the 5E3 is much beefier, louder, with more 'presence' and more tweakability in the sound. 5E3 if you are gigging, 5F1 for running power tube saturation at home volumes.

  • nice tone. i have that thing in my bedroom, and what i can say is that after volume 2, it doesn't actually get any louder. it's just increasing in tube saturation.

wonder if other tweed amps like the twin and the bassman behave like this as well.

    nice legs by the way.

  • @000steelandstone000 A 5E3 (and tweeds in general) should get louder to a bit over halfway - the two vols and tone are very interactive, especially when the tone is open to 9-10. Sounds like your pre and power tubes might be a bit "soft" as well. Are you running a 12AY7 as your first preamp tube? A 12AX7 will overdrive too early.

(That's my work gear - shorts and steelcaps - and it was around 45 degrees C at the time.)

  • @naylaird well, a little louder when i actually hit 12 in fact. i don't think there are any real problems with my amp, i do believe the 5e3 works that way.

Nik sent it to me with the standard 12AX7 + 12AY7 configuration. It seems to work perfectly well for me. Nowadays, i usually plug into Mic Input 2, for a bit lesser gain and more clean headroom.

I love the way the amp responds to my picking hand. And i also love the way it doesn't increase in volume after 2 actually. Easier to use!

  • @000steelandstone000 Tweeds have a little 'step' in the tone around 9-10 with a very clean and louder sound from there to 12.

I like going into Mic2 with Mic1 bridged to Inst2. Curious that yours doesn't get louder though; the vol pots affect the tone/output on both 'channels' even when an instrument isn't plugged in to that input. I usually run the Inst vol around 3 when using the Mic inputs - if you fiddle with both vols you'll find a sweet spot.
