The cyclical temperature changes associated with orbital factors is a slow, gradual change in temperatures over thousands of years. You think that snow means the planet is cooling? lol There's a difference between WEATHER and CLIMATE... weather is short-term and localised (ie: the snow in the UK)... climate is long-term and GLOBAL (ie: the global rise in temperatures seen since the Industrial Revolution).

The very warm November in the US is partly responsible for the snow they had - the warm weather left the Great Lakes several degrees warmer than usual. The cold air then moved over the lakes, picked up all of the moisture and dumped it as snow over the US. The other reason is the Arctic Oscillation went into a Negative Phase, meaning the cold air that is kept in the Arctic during a Positive Phase, spilt out into North America & Northern Europe. Globally, 2009 was the 2nd hottest on record.
