Most Metallica songs are pretty well know in the metal community. I think songs like Motorbreath or Escape are more underrated.

St anger does have a few decent songs, so they tried something different and it didnt work...loads of bands do that (megadeth with risk) it helped pave the way for death magnetic which was a true return to form imo

He almost spits out these words with hatred, it's awesome, nowadays the song is sped up almost double speed due to Lar's shitty drumming and James losing his 'edge'

I actually don't blame them for cutting a lot of Jason out in this stage of their career. Cliff just died. They had probably written a lot of this stuff with Cliff already and couldn't bear to hear a new player on this material. Jason is actually heard on Garage Days pretty clearly, material without Cliffs involvement. They may have treated him unfairly, but he got super rich, super well known, respected and will forever be a part of the most popular metal band in history, good for him.

The bass is actually there very much, almost too much. I remember when this came out, the stereo use to have a vibration of just bass, sometimes outweighing the guitar frequency, there was no notes, just bass signal. That's always been my problem with this album. They really should put out a re-master, without touching the guitar sound, because they are so fucking heavy. This album is under-rated in their career, I think this is their best metal album, pure aggression, so metal.

@21jse21 Thats not true. Why would they sabotage their own album to make point like that? The lack of bass in the mix is due to james hetfields guitar tone. The mid levels are almost competely scooped out so whats left is so hefty and filled with bottom end that its frequencey sits right where the bass should be in the mix. The problem is more about the source sounds than it is the mixing levels. Its not as exciting as your story but its the truth.

There are only a few parts were you can hear the bass on Justice and its so low in the mix its stupid. Listen to the slow part int he middle of the song Justice, use headphones and turn it up, not too loud and then you can hear the bass guitar.

I have the original tape released in 1988, and it has very much bass. Maybe you, those who complain the album don't have bass, have some crapy version from the net..... Or something released after 1988.

Anyway : very good album. In fact all the albums from Metallica are good (maybe St. Anger is not too good).
