300 languages could easily come into existence among people who had virtually no contact with any other tribes except those in the surrounding area.

As for the scientists, beliefs that people have been hear that long is something from the 50's and 60's. Dating methods have improved since then.

The Anasazi were a pre-Columbian Native American tribe that lived in the Southwest and flourished from about 100 A.D. to about 1300. There was a massive drought in the Southwest around this time which caused them to abandon their cities and move to their present day locations (i.e. Cochiti, San Ildefanso, San Felipe, etc.).

Cannibalism was practiced due to the food and water shortage which plagued the southwest at that time.
