  • I want to buy one! How did you make it?

  • how about a parts list with numbers and a how to series of videos so the rest of us can duplicate your work.

    Your definitely onto something here...

  • I can tell that you're a Electronics Engineer or have a great deal of experience in electronics. You really should give thought to manufacturing and marketing this throttle system. You're on to something big here. I can say that because I started my railroad career as a Conductor with Norfolk Southern on the Lake Division in 2001. People want what you've created and will buy it. That's why people are asking you so many questions. That throttle is totally awesome!

  • What you can not tell from the Vidoe is that it's hand held. Looks like Bruce has it mounted so you can see it in the video.

  • This throttle is one of the coolest and smartest things I have ever seen for realistic model railroad operation. What a great idea. You did an excellent job, it looks very professional.

  • wow i like it alot

  • An Excellent Demonstration! Thanks! =D

  • Well done Batman. Pity about the NCE cab. Had a friend who had half a 1:1 steam loco cab against the wall, I built a DC throttle, he did the mechanics connecting 1:1 throttle and brake levers to pot's. He would lean out the window watching the layout. Extreme!

  • WOW that is fantastic!! very well done - very impressive!

  • This takes me way back to day one when I joined the group and we were at your house. I still think you need to do an atrical on this. Also it would be great for show and tell on wednesday nights. I do not recall how much of the group has seen your this.

  • How did you make the controler

  • I opened up an NCE Cab04P controller, and wired momentary switches in parallel with the horn, light, bell, and brake (#7), push buttons, replaced the potentiometer, and put it all in an enclosure, adding handles to the horn button and speed potentiometer.

The soldering was a bit tricky and voided NCE's warranty. I ruined one Cab04P in the process.

  • Dear Batman. I get the button parallel wiring, but the liniking of the 8-notch handle with a rotary pot has me confused. Is there a gearbox/arm connection to the stock pot, or did you have to replace the NCE pot with a different one?

  • I removed, (and discarded), the original pot from the circuit board and ran wires to a new pot mounted on a bracket which is mounted on the enclosure. The throttle handle, which has about 90 degrees of rotation, is connected on the new pot, which has about 270 degrees of rotation, with gears. The detent mechanism utilizes the throttle handle gear.

  • Dear Batman, I suspect there's a magazine article in this, if not an actual product. Very Impressive, and a great use fo the technology! :-)

  • Now there's a project for someone. Put to market a "generic" sexy throttle that works with NCE and Digitrax :o))

I use Loksound decoders so that I can use local engine sounds. Disadvantage is that we can't use manual notching, although we can work around it.

Thanks for showing.Seems like DCC sound is going to just keep getting better, and has a long way to go,still.

    comtrain

  • Now that is really nice!

Could you tell us a little about what you have done? The throttle was your star, but of course you locomotive would not have operated so, without some major tweaking. You have notching, and you have brakes.

Brakes usually are preset with CV values . That is CV 3 sets acceleration, CV4 sets brakes. However your brake switch bleeds it off quickly. Very nice controller you have there

    Cheers

    Rod

  • The engine is an Atlas Gold SD24, which came with a QSI sound decoder. CV3, (acceleration),= 20. CV4, (deceleration),=50. The brake handle works the same as pressing the "7" button which essentially cuts the CV4 effect way down temporarily.
