  • Actually, this is very good rendition of Der Holle Rache....better than most of nowadays chirping soprano wannabes

  • I'm very surpsrised when I see the negative comments here. I've grown up with Bergman's version of this opera so I guess I'm biased. I agree that there are better performances of this aria (well, obviously, since Nordin couldn't take the highest notes and the voice was replaced with someone's who could) but I still think that the dramatic tension and emotions are perfect here. Like in this scene, look at Pamina's horror when she hears those high notes, the whole aria becomes much more sinister.

  • I love it, but I prefer Diana Damrau!, great work!, thank you uploader!

  • She sound good to me and at the end that's what counts.

  • She sounds and looks like the witch she portrays. Recall that it was Ingmar Bergman who madethe cast and I do not think it was so that the best operavoyce casted in this lauded film version of The Magic Flute... He searched for the character

  • has anyone mentioned the nazis yet on this comments stream? - it seems about time doesn't it?

  • The timbre is similar to Florence Foster Jenkins.

  • @baritonebynight

    You are right

A lot of sopranos in 20th had that timber, This rendition isnt bad,

  • @georgesmokie That chorus singer should have played the Diva card and told them if they wanted her to sing the Fs she would sing take over the whole role. As longs as you don't play it too often, the Diva card can be very helpful to one's career. In my case it just made me feel better......

  • de las peores versiones que he escuchado, esto es horrible

  • its a film?

  • @HConstantine @IntampestusNox Oh! come on don't fight... and just "enjoy" the piece ok?

  • it's wonderful

  • subtitles are awful too...

  • oh mon dieu quelle horreur!! mdr!! meme pour l'epoque c'est de mauvais gout!

  • what language is that?

  • @JohnyWindmill :To answer your qustion. This was performed in Finland swedish,. To Stockholm or Skane speakers, then,it is most annoying!Youtube has Estonian,Danish,Turkish and English renditions. For most, it is best done in thick German, as Mozart intended.Moser,1972 & Damrau,2003 are exceptional, gifted coloratura sopranos.Birgit doesnt have the F6, full voice &according to some she didnt have whistle register, some other soprano dubbing in for the triplet.Yet, HC, below loves it!

  • @JohnyWindmill, Pamina (Irma Urrila) has a Finland Swedish accent, while the Queen of the Night (Birgit Nordin) is singing in standard Swedish with no particular accent. What HaberfieldChiro is hearing is actually enunciation.

Also, I'm from Stockholm and I find Finland Swedish to be both melodious and beautiful.

Not all 'stockholmare' are linguistic bigots.

  • Urm i think she is ok i would like to see you guys get top f's

  • @solly2405 I agree... I've heard way better, but I feel like calling her singing awful isn't fair... I think she lacks a bit of emotion in her singing, but she definitely hit the f's...

  • This is my favorite performance.

  • She'd better sing this aria in American Sign Language.

  • the singing is not bad i'm just not use to hearing it in this language

  • just great

  • great

  • the most perfect version. it shows the tragic madness of vengeance it is not about how to sing nice and kind and perfect. these are real emotions not just playing divas.

  • Isn't she suposed to be horrible to listen to. Isn't she frigthening Pamina? Come one, she is singing perhaps the most difficult arias for a colorathura soprano!

  • @HerrWarja : correct me if I am wrong, but this was made to give swedish children some music appreciation so from the get go it sounds odd being sung in swedish instead of german. As well Birgit is a dramatic soprano not a coloratura so it isnt going to reach the heights of Damrau, Dessay., or the breeziness of Popp or Sumi Jo with their more lyrical approach.Considering these factors then she performs adequately, yet, if you want a coloratura goto the abovementioned or Rita Streich..perfect jk

  • @HaberfieldChiro Alright you;re wrong. Your taunt that it is for children is insulting. The purpose of this was to show what an opera could be like with real acting and with real film-making supporting it. This film is an unparalleled achievement, which makes every other filmed opera look amateurish. Nordin is not the best singer for the role, but that''s really a secondary matter compared to the overall achievement.

  • @HConstantine :ok!Thanks for the clarification.Im sure it will be worthwhile viewing! The remark about viewing for children wasnt meant as a slight.Jag kan tala lite svenska ocksa, tack sa mycket er ha en trevlig dag, john

  • She's not Florence Foster Jenkins. She hits most of the notes right, it's just that her voice is harsh and horrible to listen to.

  • @tcradical I am sure your aesthetic judgments are superior to Ingmar Bergman's! that just stands to reason with a paragon of taste such as yourself!

  • @HConstantine Stop bothering me and other people, we are going to report you if you continue, Nobody is interested in arguing with you, I specially told you. Get a life.

  • @tcradical I am becoming more and more interested int his reporting. Who are you going to report me to, and for what? I wish you'd spell that out so I could fully recognize the dire nature of the threat you are making against me.

  • Comment removed

  • brutto!

  • ESPANTOSO! me quedo con Florence Foster Jenkins!

  • well, she will not displace Damrau or Moser, at least for all eternity......if not longer

  • Nordin has always been my favorite Queen of the Night - she may not be technically perfect, but the verve, pacing, and free-flowing tempo of this version never fails to get to me.

  • wow, the singing could not be worse.

  • @tcradical The acting is bad too. . . .

  • @IntampestusNox There are several ways to to respond to such an ignorant jackass--I think fuck you--is better than you deserve.

  • @HConstantine That's my opinion!! What's your problem???

  • @IntampestusNox This is film is what introduced me to opera. This Christmas my children will finally be old enough to see it. You are blaspheming and too ignorant even to to know it.

  • @HConstantine Yeah ok!!! Whatever. . .

  • @HConstantine :Now dont be shy in saying what you really mean HC.Tell us what you really think of intampestusnoxs opinion!!

  • @tcradical yes it could...Florence Foster Jenkins does it even worse...but this lady is not too far from her.

  • @tcradical i agree.

  • @tcradical

    abosolutely agree....

  • @Dormiglione Thank you!

  • This performance is my favorite.

  • @tcradical wtf is wrong with you? This is one of the best sung versions of this very difficult aria I have ever come across. Where is your culture?

  • @starrbaby74 It is exactly as you say.

  • @tcradical are you blind?

  • I've seen this opera since I was very little, and this is my fav part! I can't understand why you are so negative...

  • @AlskarSebbe It is not being negative, it is knowing what is well done and knowing how to recognize when is terribly done. If you do not know when is not well done then that means that you were not thaught or have thaught yourself to appreaciate good art, who does not know what is bad does not know what is good either, then you have to raise your level of sensitivity through art classes, or going to different shows, eaither ballet, opera, expositions, anyting, and then you'll enjoy art deeply!

  • I found that this work is an exceptionally excellent!!!

I mean the whole series of this swedish magic flute.

Much lovelier than the English version.

First, Swedish still resemble to German and softer.

I would buy it if they issue a dvd version

  • @arpiruk there is a DVD :) I own it and it's awesome. I think it might only be region 1 though...

  • Really not brilliant- Diana Damrau would put her to shame- but then a gain Ms. Damrau's interpretation would be superior to ANYbody else's...

  • @bjnevin So I thought until I heard Edda Moser...that role was made for a voice like Edda's :D so terrifying and thrilling, just incredible, you have to hear it!

  • Kan någon av er sjönga bättre än så? Nej just det, de kunde ni ju inte göra men då så måste ni kränka någon annan i stället som kan det och bra dessutom.

  • terrible voice, terrible interpretation, just violating mozart...

  • From Bo Harding, Copenhagen, Denmark! I remember seeing this on television when I was a child. I will never forget it...it left me with the feeling, that opera is the most most FANTASTIC thing in the world...And now so many years later i know...IT IS!!!

  • Dont you know that the queen shall BEE SCARING , she is not a Disney pricess ,she is hateful and Nordin makes that pefect, i didnt think so before but now i know better,

  • are you guys crazy! she is wonderful!

  • @igorTheLabRat Clean your ears.

  • She's not THAT bad... I understand if there are better singers, but if you can sing that song without a tomato thrown at you, you can't be too terrible. Don't be so mean about it o.o

  • @Nonman642 How many more tomatos do you want thrown at this thing when the mayority of the people that have commented on it have said that THEY DO NOT LIKE IT.

  • @tcradical There seem to be may opera listeners who care only about the quality of the singing--which admittedly is mediocre here--without considering that the dramaturgy and montage achieved by Bergman is a level of magnitude above any other film adaptation of opera.

Moser give a nice performance, for instance, but it was so boring to look at, I wanted to start reading the newspaper when it was on.

This is not what Monteverdi intended.

  • @tcradical And if you were dying of cancer, I guess you would a treatment voted upon by a majority of people passing by on the street, rather than taking the advice of a cancer specialist?

  • @HConstantine Blah, blah, blah...

  • @tcradical Fuck You.

  • @HConstantine Let's leave it where it is, I think we are wasting our time, lets end it peacefully. We have different opinions, they may both be right, I think we have gone a little far and things can be explained better, from both of our sides, the thing is that we have not put a lot of thought into this argument, but we probably would't have time either. Lets just leave it here. Have a good night and my best wishes to you.

  • @tcradical Looking at your channel I see the truth. You are a petromusicologist who understands nothing of art or beauty. Away with you!

  • @HConstantine Ok! Really now!!! What the fuck is your problem?????? Can't someone express their opinion??? Shut the fuck up and leave people alone!!!!! That's why we can leave comments!!! And you have no idea if I'm ingorant or not so shut the fuck up and if you bother me again I will report you honestly!!! Get a life than cheking who is leaving negative comments on this song!!!! We can't have the same taste with everyone!!! Get over it!!!!

  • @IntampestusNox You're the one that doesn't wish toallow anyone to express their opinion--threatening to 'report' me. To whom and for what? Disagreeing with you is an actionable offense?

I am am developing a clearer and clearer idea of the depth of your ignorance, marked out by your inability to express yourself without obscenity. Also since Intampestus is not a real Latin word, you might more appropriately change it to in pestifera nocte, referring to your conception.

  • @HConstantine May I remind you that I'm not the one who insulted you first??(@IntampestusNox There are several ways to to respond to such an ignorant jackass--I think fuck you--is better than you deserve.)Your 1st comment to me!! I respect everyone's opinion as long as they respect mine!!! I never said that I was going to report you if you express your opinion but if you bother me!!If you expressed your opinion more kindly in the first place there wouldn't be a problem!!

  • @HConstantine Plus the name was a friend's idea! Not mine! I never heard of this word before!! So tell that to her!!!

  • Interesting in a language other than German. There are some good moments vocally, and her facial expressions are good. Unfortunately she does not seem to possess the stamina needed to see this VERY demanding aria through.

  • Some of you really need to stop acting like you even have a clue, it's tedious.

  • There is a lot of to critisize in Bergmanns Trollflöjten especially the language and the performing of the 3 boys but Birgit Nordin at least did an excellent performance of the queen of the night, terrific.

  • this is just unappealing

  • I am scared of her

  • What language was this performed in o.O??

  • Swedish. The original libretto is in German, but Ingmar Bergman used a translation and made a few other small changes.

  • ok i cant sing what so ever, but her tone is off and she...she seems to harsh in her high notes...not to mention they are actually lower than whats written in the score....shes probably wonderful in other roles though.....

  • Si canta bien, pero muy picadas las notas 1:13, suena algo superficial.

  • Florence Foster Jenkins

  • why couldn't they engage a GOOD singer to appear in the movie?!

  • Horrid!

  • No me gusto.. :S

  • me encanto, y más que este la traducción en español, saludos de Mexico, EXCELENTE

  • I wish they would make a newer version of this!!!

  • uhn.. didn't like it....

  • Doesn't sing in German???

  • in Swedish

  • she sounds like a toy in the coloratura passage

  • Do someone knows more about this singer.. did she do other thing?

  • @sonqualnave Why, you want to continue braking your ears?

  • Could somebody please put up the scene that's after this with her and her father? Please.

  • Not her father, it was actually her Father's best friend, Sarastro.

  • Of course, the singing is not that brilliant, but Bergman found the perfect faces for the movie. I love his actors.

  • It's a rape on Mozart! It was written in German! It should be sang in German. ://

  • Very well done and I also like the way she is gazing; very convincing to me that is.

  • Es en sueco...y tiene subtítulo en ...español?

  • Needless to say, Dessay is a better queen of thenight. But Bergman did change my mind about Mozart with this movie.

  • Ingmar Bergman said "The voice was not as important as the acting. For this was a movie and the acting was therefore more important. The actresses must be good looking"

  • Enough with the "not in Swedish" comments already. This film was made for a Swedish audience in a bid to make opera interesting for children and young people - it would have been hard to reel them in had they not been able to understand a word. If you don't want to hear it in Swedish, just don't hunt down a copy and very carefully don't watch it. Problem solved. Oh, but you'll miss out on cinematic history - but hey, at least you got to brag your opera knowledge to strangers!

  • i have to say that i like it in swedish even though i dont speak it!

  • she really wasn't all that good of a singer...her acting was far better then her singing skills

  • I have to agree--the film and its presentation, overall, was great; but the Queen was definitely one of the weaker characters.

  • nämen fy , det är ju riktigt gräsligt.

  • well, there are a lot of better voices, but this is the best version of Mozart's Zauberflöte (allthough in Swedish). The other singers are better than Birgit Nordin.

  • It's Swedish.

  • Bergman chose the opera singer with the best dramatic acting abilities available in Sweden at the time for this film and that was Birgit Nordin. Had he wanted the best Swedish singer available at the time, he would have picked Margareta Hallin (who also was an excellent actress). Unfortunately, there are only two clips with MH available here and both are from a church concert when she's 76. Still, one can hear and imagine what a stunning singer she was.

  • Been listening to various version of the Aria for decades. This rendition catches the dark psychological dimension better than many productions.

  • muy buena

  • yes it's in swedish

  • Agh... it's not in German! The queen is creepy!!!!! Very good actresses, but I don't care for the queen's high notes during the little cadenzas (around 1:10).

  • Diana Damrau is way better at performing "Der Hölle Rache" then Erika Miklosa. Erika Miklosa doesn't have to flow.

  • Palkooo - I will agree that Diana Damrau has a terrific voice, but I have to agree that I think that Erika Miklosa is my favorite Queen. I saw her live in San Francisco a few months ago, and she absolutely blew me away... and trust me, I am VERY picky about the technique that singers use (totally my voice teacher's fault), and I consider drama to be of equal importance to music in opera. In short, I have very high standards for opera singers, and I still prefer Miklosa's Queen to Damrau's

  • @Cavatina21 Who cares about your high standars.

  • My God, the worst Queen of the Night I have ever heard

  • then who is a good queen?

  • Edda Moser - no... she´s not a good queen, she´s perfect!

  • Edda Moser is the best, a real dramatic coloratura soprano.

    Scary for beginning to end.

  • Have to disagree..... she gets really throaty and whiny on the high notes.

  • .... que ha sido esto¿??

    :S

  • I prefer Mozart's Magic Flute opera to remain in German. And though I appreciate film adaptations of opera, this particular one used too many claustrophobic closeup shots for the Der Holle Rache aria--together with big stage acting--- so the effect is annoying. Yes, I know it's a Bergman film, but I can't help feeling annoyed.

  • FINALLY THE QUEEN IS SCARRRYYY!

  • Hopeless singer.. I feel sorry for her.

  • This is horrible!

  • I love the accent, the translation did make a big difference.

Some words are stressed differently and changes the mood.

I hate that the top notes are a little too staccato-ish though :p

  • Jag fick just ståhår över hela kroppen och det händer inte ofta! Den här är underbar!!! Love it!!!

  • the queen is appropriately scary :D Love the lighting changes. Is it just me or are these not the normal lyrics?

  • This scene is from a Swedish (Bergman) TV film, so the lyrics is a Swedish translation of the original lyrics (pretty close to the original as far as I can hear).

  • ahhh...thanks.

  • totally NOT in german.

if it's from a swedish tv film as hlvrmdtfj..whatev.. says, i'm guessing it's swedish lyrics?

  • The Queen scares me. She looks like a bad witch.

  • That what it supposed to bee ohhh ,

  • ok ok. don´t be pissed of. i know the zauber flöte. all i wanted to say is, she is an complete driferent kind of queen. still good.

  • I think it's awesome! Bergmans version of the Magic FLute is the best I've seen... the only one where they could both sing and act...

  • Did you know that it isn't Birgit Nordin who sings the highest notes?

  • Exactly! Ulla Blom is the one singing the top notes, simply because Nordin weren't able to. From what I hear Nordin still thinks it's embarrasing and is trying to cover it up.

  • wonderful acting...pretty good singing...just one of the voices you have to get used to.

  • The camera angles bug the hell out of me...as does her voice. I'm not a fan of this song in Swedish either.

  • I think the singing is fine. And if you are an opera lover, and one who knows the Magic Flute you'll find that this movie does the opera great justice. This is a remarkable video. Watch the other clips.

  • Simply horrible....Sumi Jo come and rescue us!

  • I think this is a welcome change of pace from those other cookie cutter queens out there (i'm not saying Sumi Jo is bad) but, they get boring after a while. And while the notes may not be as "authentic" as one might hope- it is for a movie and obviously she was giving it all she had. Plus, her acting is the best of any queen I've seen

  • what happend to the song??

just absolutely terrible, sound colouratura expression and most of all why did they have to ruin mozarts masterpiece with swedish...should be in german!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'm sorry for Bergman but this is far from his best creation, so pls don't remember him for this. Even though his taste in music was excellent but his best stagings is his Strindbergs at Dramaten, Stockholm.

  • you know bergman, the brilliant director who directed this film, died today. rip.

  • I've heard better of this piece. Still a beautiful melody though.

  • Maybe you would all understand it if you engaged in the characterization and the ability of Birgit to act - she might not be a Sumi Jo songbird but they are ten a penny - this woman can act both vocally and physically and that should be what opera is about.

  • why! absolutly horrible in another language. Mozart wrote it for german...i would listen to mozart. the tone is absolutly horrific....blah!

  • german is the only languge this should be sung in.

  • this is NOT german. that says alot about her diction, whatever this language is. no no no the tone is way too spread!

  • Ehh... That lady doesn't do much justice to this piece with her voice lacking depth, power, and obvious strain and hesitation. She isn't that well trained obviously. Decent try though.

  • The time in this video must be under the effects of Einstein's Relativity... why they do this to Mozart? Dreadful

  • Her acting is far better than her singing.

My favourite Der Holle Rache are 1) Diana Damrau for both acting and singing and 2)Sumi Jo / L. Serra for the quality of their voice and cleaness and purity of it.

    N. Dessay has a great voice too, but she lacks intensity and drama in her carachterization.

  • i watched an interview with Sumi Jo in which she said that she really doesn't like singing Der Holle Rache. but i agree that she does it impeccably

  • this is dreadful. and i can't even explain why.

  • i just threw up a bit in my mouth.

  • This is hilarious.

  • Funny fact:

Birgit Nordin had trouble singing the highest notes (the high F!!!) so swedish soprano Ulla Blom had to sing them instead in this recording...
