Clearly the uploader of this video (shaunconnell) doesn't have a clue what socialism is. Let me explain: It is, fundamentally, socializing the means of production. Trade, exchange, distribution, etc. are on the second level: they are just the ways of circulating the wealth that is already generated through exploitation of labor. So, defending capitalism as a "just" way of distributing wealth misses the point. Treating only the symptoms, is not a remedy.
He's not really a socialist. The United States has always (yes, ALWAYS) been a mixture of capitalism and socialism. We have never (yes, NEVER) really been capitalist. Just because Obama wants a bit more government control doesn't make him a socialist. I would say he's a social democrat. The simplest way to sum up social democracy is basically what they have in France and Sweden and Finland.
The multiple cultures of America deserve this kind of government, they have been treated like shit for hundreds of years, i can see why theyd want state where eveyone is equal.

First of all universal health care wasn't Obama's idea, the idea has been around a long time and Obama was just responding to the fact that the majority of Americans wanted a universal health care system. Obama has lower taxes, lower corporate taxes, more corporate support and a much larger military budget that Reagan would have ever dreamed of. Socialism? Get real. I think it's an ingenious system that uses market forces to correct the most serious problems in the healthcare system. How is that sacrificing freedom or liberty? It gives you more options in who you can buy insurance from and prohibits the insurance companies from lying to you about what you're buying.

But the health insurance industry, who we've tried to slowly help get their shit together for decades, have proven that without intervention they will run healthcare in this country into the ground. I used to be a Libertarian but I was always skeptical of the belief that voluntary charities could adequately take care of the poor, but then I realized it's much worse than that & the banksters & wall street elite are actually robbing us by exploiting our infrastructure and labor.
Second: While you make valid points, Skydancer, I disagree. But then, I look at this whole thing differently and that would be quite the lengthy discussion. I'll simplify it by saying I'm in favor of the Fair Tax, and if that cannot be had, then a flat percentage rate for all income brackets.
Third: My problem with Obama's thinking is that he's FORCING empathy. He says "we should all help our neighbors." I agree; but we should not FORCE people to help..

I don't think you understand. It was a bonus. On top of my normal $92,000 a year a salary. I earned it because I helped my company improve their efficiency so they could lay off a bunch of my fellow co-workers. So, instead of that $13,000 going into other people's pockets, it went into mine. And I'm saving it which does nothing to stimulate the economy! That's how cancer capitalism works. I also earned it by having NO life other than work. I have no family, and no desire for one, which means my health-care is also cheaper, and I can work 17 hours a day. @Skydancer365 Actuallly, saving is good for the economy. The money either gets invested in stocks and capital or it goes into the bank. The bank loans out that money to small busineses. It is still in circulation. If spending were the only thing that made th econom go, then unemployment benefits and food stamps should make the economy explode with growth...

You know, the funny thing is, I contributed $3700 to Obama (primary + election) and yet I'm listed as a contribution from the Medical Industry (because I work for them) even though I'm strongly in favor of Single Payer Health Insurance.

Generous unemplyment benefits, high marginal tax rates, and rigid labor markets (dominate by unions) is why France has such a bad economy. They don't work very much. The average American works 7 hours more per week than the average Frenchman.

Trade, exchange, distribution, etc. are on the second level: they are just the ways of circulating the wealth that is already generated through exploitation of labor. The first principle of economics is that trade -- or commerce, business -- is not zero sum. In other words, two people can benefit from the same trade and transaction.
Once you understand this, the rest will follow.

I think it's an ingenious system that uses market forces to correct the most serious problems in the healthcare system. If he was a socialist he would have pushed for single payer or at least a public option instead of trying to lower cost by increasing competition. And it reduces the deficit without raising taxes.

How is that sacrificing freedom or liberty? It gives you more options in who you can buy insurance from and prohibits the insurance companies from lying to you about what you're buying.

But the health insurance industry, who we've tried to slowly help get their shit together for decades, have proven that without intervention they will run healthcare in this country into the ground. Second: While you make valid points, Skydancer, I disagree. But then, I look at this whole thing differently and that would be quite the lengthy discussion. I'll simplify it by saying I'm in favor of the Fair Tax, and if that cannot be had, then a flat percentage rate for all income brackets.
Third: My problem with Obama's thinking is that he's FORCING empathy. He says "we should all help our neighbors." I agree; but we should not FORCE people to help..

First: Think less in terms of parties, and more in terms of an individual's actions. Each man and woman thinks and acts for themselves, so let them stand on their own merits. I don't think you understand. It was a bonus. On top of my normal $92,000 a year a salary. I earned it because I helped my company improve their efficiency so they could lay off a bunch of my fellow co-workers. So, instead of that $13,000 going into other people's pockets, it went into mine. And I'm saving it which does nothing to stimulate the economy! That's how cancer capitalism works. The rich get richer and everybody else gets poorer

It is still in circulation. If spending were the only thing that made th econom go, then unemployment benefits and food stamps should make the economy explode with growth...

@Skydancer365 By the way, living on unemployment is not a sustainable path. If nobody is working and everybody is living off the government, then nothing gets produced. The math just doesn't add up. Generous unemplyment benefits, high marginal tax rates, and rigid labor markets (dominate by unions) is why France has such a bad economy. They don't work very much. The average American works 7 hours more per week than the average Frenchman.
