The awareness of breath is certainly pivotal. 3 breaths would be 3 aware moments, here, as life now. Yet, there's more than 3 moments in a day, upon forgetting the breath pulls one back into thoughts, pulling one out of the moment and thus away from ones own self.
Breath in every moment, breathing as the breath, as you, is key. A 4 X 4 X 4 X 4 breath count is highly effective. Meaning breath in for 4 counts, hold 4 counts, then same on out breath. To become the breath of life, equal and one.
