i've seen this movie before, but i had to come back to it after becoming extremely close with my band teacher. im one of her private flute students, and the impact Mr. Holland had on this clarinet player totally 100% reminds me of the impacts my teacher has had on me. She's my Mr. Holland. :)

That clarinetist is just as horrible as she was before the speech. Horrible film, just awful. And this is 1965, and his great "symphony" would NEVER have sounded like it did if it were written in 1965. But, then again, it took him 30 YEARS to write his 2-minute long magnum opus of pop music shit.
wow i remember when i requested you to make this video (: 2 years ago. thanks so much. i love this movie it's definitely one of my favorites. hope all is going well for you! happy holidays
@johntetzel: It's a cheesy, Hollywood way of saying "externalize the most positive aspect you view in yourself and allow it to personify the melody." I cringed when I heard him say it back when I was 14, but now I can be a little forgiving. ^_^ It was pretty cheesy, though. :P
@ytcomposer it's a teacher finding any way he can to make something work,...sometimes cheese works. notice how no other part of the film is cheesy? You don't think they recognised it when making it?
@TheScrewball1982: I think the underlying message of placing the most positive aspect of oneself into one's work is the most poignant of the movie, actually. I think they probably conceded and made it sound that way because it was the most palatable way to explain it to a mainstream audience. It's just a concession made for the sake of the majority of the crowd, but it's a great message.
I want to become a teacher because of this movie and the fact that I have had far too many teachers really impact me to not want to go into that profession. There should be an international teacher appreciation day. I see kids be cruel to each other and to their teachers and I feel bad for everyone involved. Teachers are human too and they have lives that we might not know too much about.
I played clarinet in middle school I sucked ! lol I gave it up but I was only in band becuase our Chorus got cut :( but I never gave up singing and my band teacher was really cool and would play piano sometimes and we would sing with him.
Mr. Holland reminds me so much of my band teacher, Mr. Wagner. He taught us not to just play to music that was written on the page, he taught us to have fun with it as well. He was the reason I stayed in band for all 6 years of my educational life. He taught me not to give up no matter what. He made us appreciate the music we were playing, didn't matter if we liked it or not, at least we appreciated it.
My favorite part of the movie, because my childhood piano teacher taught me the very same concept during a time of intense frustration for me: "Play the sunset". Thirty-five years later, I remember that moment like it was yesterday, because it was the turning point for my love of music. I spoke those words just as Mr. Holland paused, before he said them himself, and my wife was amazed. All that he said about music, "fun, heart, feeling", is absolutely true. What a great and insightful scene.
I knew exactly how she felt all threw Grade 9....I blew into my flute...and it was horrible, I came to the point of quitting so many times, then come Summer time...it came to me. It just "happened"......it was the most amazing feeling...its like riding a bike..once, you get it...you never really forget.
I would love to be able to have the kind of impact he had with his students and staff! Can you imagine making that kind of difference every day in so many people's lives? The scene at the end of the movie as well says it all!
@Pilotpatty1 All good teachers have this effect on their students. They just might never know it. For myself, when I was about 35 years old, after 2 PhDs and a very nice General Partner position in a major financial services firm, I thought it was time to hunt down a couple of them and let them know. There were 4 teachers that I can point to that had a major effect on my life - I managed to get to three of them - one had passed on (so I'm sure she knows too).
@Pilotpatty1 I have a music teacher exactly like this. Inspires everybody in every genre, instrument and style that they do. =) Hope some day he'll retire and we can perform one of HIS symphonies xD
wow, I didn't realize that was her. She was terrific in The Upside of Anger. And she did that movie 10 years after this one and she was just terrific in both films.
I Loooove This Movie! My Music teacher Diane Williams showed it to me in middle school. I have loved it ever since. She was one of the best music teachers I've ever had.
For me, it was the opposite thing. When I was in the 4th grade I wanted to take up the saxophone more than anything. The music teacher said they were out of saxophones but to take the clarinet because it was practically the same instrument. I stuck with it for a fairly long time but I NEVER liked. At that age, there was NOTHING cool to me about the clarinet. Now, I kinda wish I still had it.
Does anybody know the name of the song Mr.Holland plays for her when he says that they sing the same thing again and play the same three notes or something? If you know Please! Tell me.. :)
Damn, that ginger bitch picked one of the hardest instruments out there. She just pictured a sunset in her mind, and that did it? PFFFTTT If only...

How many music instruments can she play actually?
I used to know she's a talented pianoist.(Started to earn a living by playing piano in hotels at the age of 17. )
It's very hard to find an actress who look amazingly gorgeous and can play many music instruments...
PLus she's a REDHEAD! and a rare one
