  • Damn, that ginger bitch picked one of the hardest instruments out there. She just pictured a sunset in her mind, and that did it? PFFFTTT If only...

  • I joined the band in the 6th grade. My first instrument was the clarinet, and I owe it all to this movie!

  • My teacher showed me this part. Really inspirational to me as a clarinet player. People im Kind of lonely. You can text me if you want. 808-371-4277

  • @peepzstar So off Jan! You are a really great clarinet player and i am very glad to have known you. :)

  • where can I find the sheet music for this?

  • i disliked it cuz there swasn't enough action

  • What is the name of the song gives the example?

  • @yomegayo

    louie louie

  • i've seen this movie before, but i had to come back to it after becoming extremely close with my band teacher. im one of her private flute students, and the impact Mr. Holland had on this clarinet player totally 100% reminds me of the impacts my teacher has had on me. She's my Mr. Holland. :)

  • @organboi You go ahead and write something better then you waste of space.

  • we're supposed to think this is the red-haired girl at the end of the movie. horrible casting.

  • @organboi fuck you

  • wow i remember when i requested you to make this video (: 2 years ago. thanks so much. i love this movie it's definitely one of my favorites. hope all is going well for you! happy holidays

  • People criticize Dreyfus for being a terrible actor but I think he does a bang-up job

  • How many music instruments can she play actually?

I used to know she's a talented pianoist.(Started earning money by playing piano in hotels at the age of 17. )

It's very hard to find an actress who look amazingly gorgeous and can play many music instruments...

PLus she's a REDHEAD! and a rare one.

  • "Play the sunset." What the hell is that schlock

  • @johntetzel: It's a cheesy, Hollywood way of saying "externalize the most positive aspect you view in yourself and allow it to personify the melody." I cringed when I heard him say it back when I was 14, but now I can be a little forgiving. ^_^ It was pretty cheesy, though. :P

  • @ytcomposer it's a teacher finding any way he can to make something work,...sometimes cheese works. notice how no other part of the film is cheesy? You don't think they recognised it when making it?

  • @TheScrewball1982: I think the underlying message of placing the most positive aspect of oneself into one's work is the most poignant of the movie, actually. I think they probably conceded and made it sound that way because it was the most palatable way to explain it to a mainstream audience. It's just a concession made for the sake of the majority of the crowd, but it's a great message.

  • I want to become a teacher because of this movie and the fact that I have had far too many teachers really impact me to not want to go into that profession. There should be an international teacher appreciation day. I see kids be cruel to each other and to their teachers and I feel bad for everyone involved. Teachers are human too and they have lives that we might not know too much about.

  • I played clarinet in middle school I sucked ! lol I gave it up but I was only in band becuase our Chorus got cut :( but I never gave up singing and my band teacher was really cool and would play piano sometimes and we would sing with him.

  • Hey that's Jessica from True Blood!!!

  • @darqpsyke um no it's not.

  • @carryyouinmyheart I figured it out after I sent the message. Looks like her though if you're near-sighted and refuse to wear your glasses.

  • @darqpsyke No it's not, stupid. Her name is Alicia Witt.

  • This is my absolute favourite scene from this movie. I always tear up watching it.

  • I love Mr. Holland. :)

  • She played a stripper in Two and a Half Men.

  • Dreyfuss was perfect for this role

  • When she closed her eyes, I was half-expecting Holland to get up and grope her.

  • Mr. Holland reminds me so much of my band teacher, Mr. Wagner. He taught us not to just play to music that was written on the page, he taught us to have fun with it as well. He was the reason I stayed in band for all 6 years of my educational life. He taught me not to give up no matter what. He made us appreciate the music we were playing, didn't matter if we liked it or not, at least we appreciated it.

  • Someone told me you're not supposed to use any vibrato on the clarinet.

  • una de las mejores escenas de la pelicula!!

  • Lol next time i'm playing my clarinet i'm fonna "play the sunset"

  • Incredible movie.

  • My favorite part of the movie, because my childhood piano teacher taught me the very same concept during a time of intense frustration for me: "Play the sunset". Thirty-five years later, I remember that moment like it was yesterday, because it was the turning point for my love of music. I spoke those words just as Mr. Holland paused, before he said them himself, and my wife was amazed. All that he said about music, "fun, heart, feeling", is absolutely true. What a great and insightful scene.

  • Stranger on the Shore

  • I knew exactly how she felt all threw Grade 9....I blew into my flute...and it was horrible, I came to the point of quitting so many times, then come Summer time...it came to me. It just "happened"......it was the most amazing feeling...its like riding a bike..once, you get it...you never really forget.

  • How touching...How moving...The best message we can have on graduation day..Enjoy watching....

  • I would love to be able to have the kind of impact he had with his students and staff! Can you imagine making that kind of difference every day in so many people's lives? The scene at the end of the movie as well says it all!

  • @Pilotpatty1 All good teachers have this effect on their students. They just might never know it. For myself, when I was about 35 years old, after 2 PhDs and a very nice General Partner position in a major financial services firm, I thought it was time to hunt down a couple of them and let them know. There were 4 teachers that I can point to that had a major effect on my life - I managed to get to three of them - one had passed on (so I'm sure she knows too).

  • @amoskowitz0103 continued... I would encourage you to do that if you haven't already.

and if you're a teacher, keep it up - we do appreciate you - we might just not say it in time. You never know who the governor might be!! :)

    God bless.

  • @Pilotpatty1 Good teachers do this all day long... Change a child's life and you can change the world!! Thanks for noticing.

  • @Pilotpatty1 I have a music teacher exactly like this. Inspires everybody in every genre, instrument and style that they do. =) Hope some day he'll retire and we can perform one of HIS symphonies xD

  • I love it... putting emotion into music is what it's all about!

  • Richard Reyfuss deserved the OSCAR. This is one of the best didactic movies ever.

  • Thank you so much for this!! I love that

song and I LOVE this movie! And I LOVE

    Richard Dreyfuss!

  • This... is my favorite movie. It's just woven together so well and I love the ending.

  • Alicia Witt...love her! In reality, she is crazy multi-talented

  • wow, I didn't realize that was her. She was terrific in The Upside of Anger. And she did that movie 10 years after this one and she was just terrific in both films.

  • The rain, in spain, stays mainly on the plain...those words go wonderfully with this melody. LMAO.

  • my daugher plays the clainet in her high school band. We love this movie and video too! Also the song!

  • I can play that on my saxophone n___n

  • Do you know what the title of this song is? I've been trying to find out for years.

  • Stranger on the Shore

  • stranger on the shore..I love it too

  • @eloosivegem

That is Strangers on the shore by Acker Bilk....it was written for his daughter and is one of the most beautiful compositions ever

  • thats great

  • ...and Mr. Holland gave her the confidence to become the state govenor...I so love this movie! ^_^

  • This film is truly inspiring, but what is the name of the classical piece he encourages her to play?

  • I just love this scene becasue the chick has everything to play music but the teacher shows it to enjoy it

the peace is called Stranger on the Shore by Acker Bilk.

  • Thanks, it is a really great song to listen to isn't it!

  • Thank you.

  • this movie remind me so much of my highschool teacher,he was the best! he made me love music so much.

  • I honestly fell in love with Alicia Witt in this movie !!!!

  • I Loooove This Movie! My Music teacher Diane Williams showed it to me in middle school. I have loved it ever since. She was one of the best music teachers I've ever had.

  • I bawl like a little girl every time I hear this. Umbelievable scene. The reason why I became a teacher.

  • great movie!

  • i actually took up clarinet after watching this but ended up goin on to sax, great movie but

  • For me, it was the opposite thing. When I was in the 4th grade I wanted to take up the saxophone more than anything. The music teacher said they were out of saxophones but to take the clarinet because it was practically the same instrument. I stuck with it for a fairly long time but I NEVER liked. At that age, there was NOTHING cool to me about the clarinet. Now, I kinda wish I still had it.

  • The song she's playing is 'Stranger on the Shore'

Because of that song I wanted sooo bad to learn woodwinds...I still want to learn the clarinet.
