Don't forget...many of the defenders of the Alamo were ethnic Mexicans. It was a mix of races, creeds, and colors fighting for their freedom (they even had a real Scottish bagpiper who liked to play along the catwalks in the evenings), and to be Texicans; they wanted to form the Republic of Texas (which they did, at least for a short time). Study the war, and the battle; there wasn't any racist garbage involved. It was a group of people wanting freedom from tyranny.
@thisolcowboy21 you guys always talk about freedom, Texas gained independence only to loose that freedom by asking the US to annex them, where is that freedom that was fought for?
I'm scared shitless that Australia is heading the same way as the once great U S of A...WE have the Muslims everywhere in high places ...Our gutless Leaders are to scared and our newspapers are cowards
My comments on this matter are not to disturb the memory of the dead. Simply to show that history as they say is written by the victor. Had the Mexicans won it would have been their greatest victory with Santa Anna a god. People have great penmanship with a gun in their face leaders rarely sacrifice themselves just the peasants. Iraq signed documents exonerating the US of all crimes during the invasion. A cowardly act by the US
Iraq was a hell hole before the United State entered and is still a hell hole today because they are in the grips a bigoted and sexist ideology known as Islam. If the United States has instituted and forced the Iraqi people to accept a secular bill of rights, separation of religion and state, and constitution like we have in the United State it would have been worth it, but alas we did not and allowed the natives to keep their hateful and destructive ideology and beliefs.
When Muslims forget the Quran and Hadeeth as much as most Christians forget the Bible, I'm quite tolerant of them. Until that day comes, Islam as defined in Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Pakistan is the enemy.
To all the history buffs, ALL countries teach the version of history that makes them look good, and vituous. An example would be, the Japanese never mention Pearl Harbour. It is only very recently in history that might does not make right. If you go back far enough almost everyone stole the land from somebody else. Is Mexico going to give back land to the indians, and others? No, of course not. Wars were fought for land among other things. Spoils of war etc.
The truth is The Alamo story is the one of many stories of the freedom of Texas, sadly the movie never does justice to the facts, I"m British and yet no one in Hollywood tells the truth of the fight for Texas to be a Republic. Most of the people who fought and died for that right were mainly of Mexican or European Origin, i think Texas is a great story of men who wanted to live free and fought for it and got what they wished for. I just wish that the story was more factual.
The Truth the Mexicans had allowed US citizens to live in Mexico they decided they wanted the land to be part of the US the Mexicans tried to kick them out. And lost thus the settlers stole the land & it became part of the US. I always enjoy the American version of history always good for a laugh
@TheTabellarius You sir can go straight to Hades! I am a proud Texan, and although I have no Mexican blood I have family that are Mexican. The settlers were invited to move to the land, with hard work they began to make a living out of it, when Mexico decided to increase their taxes to the point they couldn't live they rebelled. Texans won their freedom not the U.S. after we were a country we later became a state. So get your facts straight!!!!
@RavensRequiem Tax or no tax it remains stolen land. I believe the Mexican citizenry were also promised full rights freedom if they came over & helped how's that working out.
I know the War criminal & Draft Dodger GW Bush is a Texan. Someone who also spent a lot of time cleaning the family records in office.
I was not trying to give a full reciting of events. PS found any WMD yet
@TheTabellarius You're an idiot. It is not stolen land. Santa Anna willingly signed it over to save his own skin. Blame him. He should have died for his country.
@F14ace A group of Rogues Scoundrels & Adventurers decided to slice themselves a piece of Mexico. The English stole Hong Kong at gunpoint, Chinese signed to. They would say anything, if not tax it would have been the price of grain or horseshoes they had the option to leave. I know you've been fed the usual US propaganda. The Spanish US war, US new the ships Mag blew up. Vietnam phony Gulf of Tonkin Attack, Iraq phony WMD you idiots will swallow any lie. 4,500 dead for Israel
@TheTabellarius Doesn't matter. If Santa Anna was a real patriot he would have died rather than hand over part of his country. Ultimately it is his fault. Besides, if Texas was still part of Mexico it would be a complete shithole too, just like the rest of Mexico. And it doesn't matter what argument you make. You're not getting it back so get the fuck over it.
You idiot Mexico claimed all sorts of land that the Spanish Empire claimed, so I guess the Mexicans stole the land from the Spanish using you logic. Oh and lets not forget all the Native Americans like Comanche who did not give shit who claimed what, Americans or Mexicans, etc. You see your an uneducated twit, Maybe the Moon belongs to the United States because we planted a flag there first! Using your logic it is U.S. Moon shining down on you right now...symbol of freedom!
No those privateers outnumbered the Mexicans living in Texas at the time. The government those privateers instituted was superior to the government in Mexico city even with the practice of slavery, bad as that is. The simple fact is Texas is more prosperous, wealthy, and free today, than the entire country of Mexico. So in terms who was right, what civilization was better for the future there is no doubt. American progress trumps bogus land claims of a dead Spanish Empire.
More important Texas was not the only state in Mexico to rebel against Santa Anna, including Coahuila y Tejas (the northern part of which would become the Republic of Texas), San Luis Potosí, Querétaro, Durango, Guanajuato, Michoacán, Yucatán, Jalisco, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas. Several of these states formed their own governments, the Republic of the Rio Grande, and the Republic of Yucatan.
You see it was not Texans who wanted freedom from Mexico City.
Of course not, but I judge who was right and wrong in any conflict by what impact it had for the future of civilization. If it was for the better than it was good and if not, it was bad. The United State's successes have far out paced our failures, and world would be far worse off without the United State than with it. You are just envious and angry at our success and what we have done for the cause of freedom. Never said perfect, but better than the rest...
@RavensRequiem He and all others like him are complete idiots who have their heads lodged up their asses. He's an obvious troll. Just ignore him and he'll dry up and blow away like the pathetic piece of shit he is.
@RavensRequiem actually the texans revealed because slavery from day one of the formation of the mexican republic was illegal and so the texans were not going to let go their free labor, so they fought for the freedom to have slaves. i am a mexican that lived in the US for 10 years (im 18) and i learned alot of american history (i like history a whole lot) and i noticed something particular with american history books and classes, it seem as if americans want to hide this part of their history..
For those who aren't aware, a number of Mexicans also died as defenders along with Crockett, Bowie and Travis. Their names are also enshrined at the Alamo. If you get a chance, visit the Alamo and feel history come "alive". Then you will "Remember the Alamo!".
This is an excellent song and all the negative comments are a sad testimony as to what we have become. Bravery speaks for itself. Those who are critical often have not seen men die for what they believe in. Americans have often been outnumbered in battle, but they have prevailed because they believe in our great country.
@coolpopovic101 I can definitely appreciate that the country has changed and certainly not for the better, however, all we have to do is go anywhere else, and this is still the best country in the world. I don't feel that we need to adopt the attitude that our best days are behind us, we just need to get back on track.
@coolpopovic101 yeah i live in canada and i always defended america because in my opinion you can't say shit about a country you don't live in but lately i've been hearing a lot of what your saying from very proud americans
Living in Texas I've been to the Alamo many times ever since I was a kid and every time I been there I can almost picture exactly what it was like when the Mexicans were attacking and climbing over the walls and the Texans desperately fighting to the last man, definitley one of the favorite battlefields in America i've been to.
@march1836 Hang it in your ear, he and the song, were gt. and so what if they were illegals, look how many are here now. small back them compared to now.
Treaty of 1848 signed by the U.S. and Mexico. Mexico ceded the southwest to the United States to end the war. Any Mexicans that are here now are the illegals. Even the native tribes of this country didn't like Mexicans(Incans and Aztecs mixed with Spanish blood). By coming across our border they have declared war on America and should be treated as enemy combatants. Period.
@janiceholloway9 The native tribes of this country ARE Mexicans you idiot! The only illegals here are the anglos/blacks who are having all those welfare mixed babies that i see everywhere! Janice, how many mixed breed babies do YOU have that I have to support?
@janiceholloway9 You do realize that war and the Alamo were two different wars? After the treaty we had the Gadsen Purchase where we bought part of Arizona from Mexico.
they were americans fighting on TEXAS soil and not on mexican soil. we lost that battle but we won the war. travis, bowie, crokett were all american citezens.santa anna and his men were the illegals! GET YOUR FACTS STRAIT!!!!
I grew up listening to Marty Robbins as he was a favorite of my parents. I remember sitting quietly and listening to this magnificent song. Even as a young child I was mesmerized by the lyrics and haunting guitar. To this day, I cannot hear this song without tearing up. I am a native Texan and this song really gets to me, especially the last verse. Thank you for your talent, Mr. Robbins...and may you rest in peace.
@jmcfx3b2z Alamo...90 minutes to Glory, San Jacinto...18 minutes to Freedom. Alamo and Goliad fallen was avenged in brief and bloody fashion. Many of the 600 or so Mexican deaths was done AFTER the battle was over and the Mexicans was trying to escape. Again many of the 1250 Texans was Mexican and suffered under Santa Ana. The battle plan at the Alamo was brilliant, cannon barrage all night, infantry attacks in day, no sleep for the defenders till the eve of Mar 6. Rest in peace.
@grannydyess Can't say I know Billy Bob Thornton's version of events, but like so many things in the past of all countries, the story of the Alamo has been captured and prostituted by other people to suit their own ends! I live in Australia, and we suffer from the same distortions of history. Thank heavens we have REAL historians who can fossick through the historical record and give us the truth.
@skoalbusch29 actually is was the 1821 flag which symbolized the constitution written in 1821 which the Texans thought Santa Anna was violating, and he was
I made a $20.00 bet with a friend that I could get a Letter to The Editor printed in the Honolulu paper on Pearl Harbor day.. He said "No Way! Bet on!!' So I began the letter,..." From Sentry Pickett Crockett`s Palisade to Signals Bridge U.S.S. Arizona.... San Antonio REMEMBERS!! ' tha`ts all it took, he never even made me mail the letter much less finish it!
Marty Robbins is the King of western ballads! The 50's & 60's had room for this type of music. A lot of the music today, for all the glitz varied styles can't compare to the basic honesty of this music. If you listen to this particular song, you'll get a great history lesson , along with the emotion of the heroes than fought this battle!
I can't believe this, I played this song for my girlfriend and she said she hated it. Well, she was my girlfriend, until three minutes after the song ended when I played it for her.
A very heroic battle but rather silly when looked with a bit of logic. All Santa Anna had to do was leave 1/4(or a portion of his army) surrounding the Alamo(or blocking escape) and send the rest of his army to find Houston as he tried to hastily gather an army. Not taking away from any of the men at the Alamo they were tough as nails and brave.
@killerdeathmetal18 How do you figure that? I forget the exact numbers of Santa Anna's army(this song isn't very historically accurate) but it was very large. If losing 1/4 of your army is going to lose you the war, you probably shouldn't even fight a battle to begin with, and how do you figure the force in the alamo would overpower a larger one that has them blocked in a fort. Also Houston in real life didn't tell them to stay, The Alamo is not really a fortress, it was a bad military decision
Some records put ol Santa Anna's army at 5500. He lost approx 1500 in the final attack, unknown how many wounded. But a couple months later he tangled with Sam Houston and Mexican forces were only 1250. No doubt some forces was left behind to secure San Antonio but where was the rest of the army? You're correct the Alamo was not a fortress but a fortified church. The Mexicans used as a fort, the Texans took it from them and tried to fortify a known poor position... folly as you stated.
@LouieO1988 Sam Houston ORDERED Travis to destory the Alamo.. But like Fannin at Goliad, Travis thought he was in charge, decided to fight a holding action to buy Houston time. Fannin did a half hearted attempt to relieve the Alamo, but got caught by Santa Anna, who killed him and his 400 men. Now if Fannin did link up with Travis.. having some 600 men at the Alamo, the results would have been the same. Higher death rate among the Mexican attackers but a Mexican victory still.
It isn't the fact that they won the battle of the Alamo, it's the fact that they no longer own the land today as a result of the Alamo, that's what's got them pissed off , and they want it all plus more back in return. like the whole country. and yes , let them come , millions of people are ready, around here they boast of how they will take over by repopulating, A quote from them " we gonna run ya gringo's out like rat's" .
Remember the Alamo! Get ready Americans war is coming again. Log on to U.S. and Mexico and what the politicians in California are saying,Very scary folks the plan is a take over by infiltration. 222 mil. in this country, and we only know of 85 mil. that's 2/3rds of our nations population at this moment, just had a News paper article from the daily Journal exposing the intent.and the fraudulent census that's given. The Mexican people want revenge from the Alamo. No joke! prepare to defend yourself
I was sorely dissapointed with our country's education when our Spanish teacher asked who knew what the Alamo was and I was the only one that raised my hand, and I don't even usually live in America-learned it all from this way cool song
I'm a senior in high school and I only heard this song cause of my mom..Honestly, I think all history classes should listen to this song because i've learned so much more from this one song then I ever did from my book.
Marty Robbins is a boss. Definitely not my typical selection in music,(he was born four years before my Grandfather), and I'm usually into indie and post-rock. If it weren't for Fallout: New Vegas, I would probably live out my life not knowing who he was. The imagery in his tunes is just so vivid; the way he carries a narritive by song. Pardon my generalization, but you can't seem to find anything these day's that holds a candle to the storytelling in one of Marty Robbins ballads.
@mdelair420 hmm, i dont know how we help out. maybe the millions in aid to africa every year? maybe the hugerelief efforts for countries that have had a disaster? and by the way, europe would have been completely screwed had the u.s. not gone into world war 2. true hitler declared war on the u.s. after we declared war on japan, but the U.S. was supplying weapons to the allied forces for years before we entered the war through the lend-lease act
@Bendyournoodle They are americunt scum and they now dead, i like this. Mexico lost the war but not this fight. I would like to be one of those who kill them.
Again, they were TEXAN. TEXAS was not an American State when this war was fought, it was a rebeling Mexican territory. Read a history book, it's sad you don't even know why your country fought Texas in the first place. Sure, they wanted to leave Mexico and they did. But during the war, they were rebeling against Mexico's rule. They were Texans, not Americans or Americunts like you're saying, Beaner.
I'm trolling? No. You're the one calling them names, I'm one saying "use common sense and read a history book." That is NOT trolling. If I was, I'd be name calling back which I did only once. Get over it.
I dunno if he's trolling or just being STUPID. I know whatcha mean though, either way with the trolling. I think he's just being stupid/naive more then trolling. Because his hated seems more biased then just random which is what most trolls use.
@Bendyournoodle Trolls also use persistence every now and again. I think at first they were being biased, but now they think you're getting on your nerves, and they enjoy it, so they're being a bully by trolling. Like I said, don't listen to them, like you said it's history now.
this is what a real mexican-American sounds like!!!

By coming across our border they have declared war on America and should be treated as enemy combatants. Period.
janiceholloway9 1 month ago
@janiceholloway9 The native tribes of this country ARE Mexicans you idiot! The only illegals here are the anglos/blacks who are having all those welfare mixed babies that i see everywhere! Janice, how many mixed breed babies do YOU have that I have to support?

@march1836 So I'm assuming you're 100% native, with no Spanish heritage?
Glyre777 1 month ago
@janiceholloway9 You do realize that war and the Alamo were two different wars? After the treaty we had the Gadsen Purchase where we bought part of Arizona from Mexico.
Bear44mc 1 month ago
@march1836 Actually the Alamo men were invited to settle in Texas by the Mexican government of 1824. Do catch up on your history reading.

they were americans fighting on TEXAS soil and not on mexican soil. we lost that battle but we won the war. travis, bowie, crokett were all american citezens.santa anna and his men were the illegals!

@RocketsFan11392 Oops...you are correct. The Texians fell at Goliad, too. Hence, "Remember the Alamo!" and "Remember Goliad!".

@jmcfx3b2z Yep. Addressed that in the previous post.
mrich1976 1 month ago

@favfern1 love wayne's version of the alamo but billy bob thornton's version is more historically correct.
grannydyess 2 months ago
@grannydyess Can't say I know Billy Bob Thornton's version of events, but like so many things in the past of all countries, the story of the Alamo has been captured and prostituted by other people to suit their own ends! I live in Australia, and we suffer from the same distortions of history. Thank heavens we have REAL historians who can fossick through the historical record and give us the truth.

LouieO1988 3 months ago
@LouieO1988 but if the 1/4 was somehow overpowered the battle would be lost
killerdeathmetal18 3 months ago
@killerdeathmetal18 How do you figure that? I forget the exact numbers of Santa Anna's army(this song isn't very historically accurate) but it was very large. If losing 1/4 of your army is going to lose you the war, you probably shouldn't even fight a battle to begin with, and how do you figure the force in the alamo would overpower a larger one that has them blocked in a fort. Also Houston in real life didn't tell them to stay, The Alamo is not really a fortress, it was a bad military decision
LouieO1988 3 months ago
Some records put ol Santa Anna's army at 5500. He lost approx 1500 in the final attack, unknown how many wounded. But a couple months later he tangled with Sam Houston and Mexican forces were only 1250. No doubt some forces was left behind to secure San Antonio but where was the rest of the army? You're correct the Alamo was not a fortress but a fortified church. The Mexicans used as a fort, the Texans took it from them and tried to fortify a known poor position... folly as you stated.
Bear44mc 1 month ago

DisgorgeKILLusa 5 months ago
@DisgorgeKILLusa

I dunno if he's trolling or just being STUPID. I know whatcha mean though, either way with the trolling. I think he's just being stupid/naive more then trolling. Because his hated seems more biased then just random which is what most trolls use.
Bendyournoodle 5 months ago
@Bendyournoodle Trolls also use persistence every now and again. I think at first they were being biased, but now they think you're getting on your nerves, and they enjoy it, so they're being a bully by trolling. Like I said, don't listen to them, like you said it's history now.
