Wards sucked, Wal Mart isnt untouchable either. Dollar General & Family Dollar has better prices of common items like soap, bleach, deo, and underware.
I used to work for Monkey Wards. Doing small electronics stocking also bring bring some to the sale's floor. They I was a Dock/Stock Personal it sucked, I enjoyed the
small electronics stocking much better and it was much ezer.
I remember when Ward went under. They had some great deals near the end. I picked up my first Tivo for under $200. I kick myself for not buying every one that they had for sale since they were going on Ebay for 2 - 3 times as much as I paid.
Sears is going to be next, along with many department stores like Dillard's, Macy's and many others. Wal-Mart has put much competition to most competitors as the days of the department store is about to disappear. Wal-Mart Make about $20 million an hour as others are going out of business.
@TELEVISIONARCHIVES Walmart dosen't have any books that relate to traveling. I used to shop at Waldenbooks and it had stuff. Ever notice how Wal-Mart only has non Catholic Version of the bible only.
@TELEVISIONARCHIVES Sears is doing fine because they are a "holding" group and own all of their stores, instead of leasing like most other major retailers still do. That means no rent payments after 50+ years paid off properties. That means even low profits are not hurt because of low operating costs. They are even leasing out their own space to retailers like Forever 21 for a tidy profit.
@onedollarphilistine Funny you mention that. Now I'm starting to wonder if the land that an ex-Sears Essentials/Kmart store in Palatine, IL is on is still owned by Sears Holdings, and that they're just leasing the land for a new shopping center on that site with Mariano's Fresh Market.
@YukoAsho Sears and K-Mart are going through another round of closings. Financial problems have plagued both of them for years now. Sears and K-Mart are next and I predict by Christmas 2012 or summer 2013 at the latest, K-Mart and Sears will be dead.
@patsaxon If you're going to pick on Walmart why not go after all the online sellers that sell. Amazon and others. In many cases people avoid sales tax. Walmart is not the problem.
@TELEVISIONARCHIVES, I don't think is the tax where ppl go online, it has to do with more with selection. Wal-mart has more selection from (A-Z) than any stores when they are in a hurry, ppl don't want to wait days for stuff they need right away. None of stores now (2011) even the economy is bad, maintain the goods consumers want like Wal-Mart does. :)
@TELEVISIONARCHIVES I also notice how much a sales tax where we have to pay on top of a product dosen't work. But a sales tax that the business pays works better.
Everybody with this damn anti Walmart thing...did you ever think that it was the business owners themselves that caused them to fail? Not saying Walmart doesn't do damage but I'm getting really tired of everybody blaming them for failures that could've been avoided.
@patsaxon What the hell're you talking about? Wal-Mart's just a giant department store, which only gets the derision they get because of how much space their stores take up, but a well-run business will run well despite. The Walmart round my house hasn't ruined the local Marshal's, Ross, Tiger Direct, Sears, Macy's, or many of the smaller stripmall joints around here.
Walmart's a convenient bogeyman, but most of the time a business's failures are their own.
@patsaxon, of course, Sears charge ridiculous prices on same item, a no brainer. Here in my town, I rather walk to wal-mart to buy the same item for $10-15 cheaper.
They are now an online retailer. So is service merchandise. I think Mervyns is about to do that also. Now circuity city is out of business(ironically this was one of the stores that took customers away from mw and sm). Wards final closing as a shopping store was actually 2001.
I remember Wards very well from my younger years here. Right now, the Montgomery Ward on OBT near the Florida Mall is now a Goodwill Industries and the one on John Young Parkway and Colonial (I think it was it) was demolished and became the Orange County Sheriff's Office HQ.
Wards sucked, Wal Mart isnt untouchable either. Dollar General & Family Dollar has better prices of common items like soap, bleach, deo, and underware.

@heine71 I would've swore Montgomery Ward went out of business in '97. At the very least, that was when the one closest to me closed.

@patsaxon From what I've read, Sears may be either closing a number of their K-Mart stores or re-branding them as "Sears".

This seems like 1996-97, may be from their 1st bankruptcy in 1997? Probably 2000, that was their final closing, but they have the 1992-98 logo.
