No duet has ever stood comparison. Tammi was the perfect foil for the undisputed prince of motown. If only there were more gems in the detroit vaults.
marvins father was a cross dresser and he hated marvin.he was a mean old bastard who wouldnot work. his mother worked while the old drunk bastard use to ride the bus all the time.his father was an abusive ass hole. you need to read marvins book divided soul.marvin was like must of us. knowing whats right and tryed to do the right thing but you know how we are all pulled towards sex drugs alcohol and rock and roll.marvin was a church boy.pk preachers kid.
Omg I didn't know that she died when she was 24 and that she daid on brain ...... wooowww but I know 1 I love that song aint no mountain high enough .... I just love that <3
I was a real Motown addict in the sixties and seventies. And this tune is utterly sublime. With its wonderful centiment and of cause the superb vocal combination of Marvin and Tammi bringing it to life. Both had notable soulful voices and mixed well together. Rest in peace Marvin and Tammi.
Every once in a while I come to listen to this song. And it never fails to bring tears to my eyes. Its the most wonderful little song and a lasting little monument to the two tragic people who made it happen Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. Rest in peace both. xx
Yep. Tears in my eyes as well. Although Marvin's vocals were dubbed onto Tammi solo track (Also great imo), sounds like 2 people havin' a real good time.
Love this more than I can say for so many reasons (some too personal to mention).
Well what has not already been said about this supremely talented and beautiful lady? What many do not realise is this record also contains a James Jamerson masterpiece that no one has been able to better since - Listen again to this terriffic recording - You'll see!
Motown did not know how to market Tammi Terrell properly. They just didn't realise how good she was, and preferred to promote a smaller group of artists that they thought had more potential to make money. She found a niche with Marvin, but many of those songs they did not sing together in the stiudio, due to Tammis illness. On some duets she did not sing at all. Everyone saw Marvin and Tammi as a perfect couple. Marvin fanccied her like he fancied everything in skirt.
Man, you are brutal at the end with that last line. It is sad they didn't market her better.
I read that Valerie Simpson of Ashford and Simpson is the one who mimiced her by singing through her nose when Tammi was ill. If true, which is the real Tammi Terrell singing? Whatever the case, the songs are great and still hold up today.
Of course ultimately not, but there is such a lot of sentimentality for both Tammi and Marvin - most of it not based in fact. Tammi was systematically abused by James Brown, David Ruffin and posssibly a Motown executive, to the extent that she was probably hit on the head wit a hammer by the hard drug-crazed Rufffin. This was the original version of Two Can Have A Party, and the better one. Much later in the studio they deleted some of Tammi's vocals and got Marvin to sing in the gaps. Why?
You know why - to capitalize on their career as a duo and if she was sick and not on the road or in the studio, a way to keep people interested, make it seem like she was doing well and to make money. Had people known, maybe they wouldn't have bought the records. After she died they tried to pair Diana Ross and Marvin together to recreate that magic, only with a different singer and from what I've read, the public did NOT like it one bit.
Another superb example of MOTOWN MAGIC, total ground breaking music, the likes of which will never be heard again, why ? because the original example is always the best.
Well no...Marvin's father shot him to death because his son, in a drug induced craze, beat the hell out of him. Marvin, Sr. was quoted to say that if Marvin EVER raised his hand to him, he'd kill him. And so, the Rev. Marvin Gay, Sr. made good his guarantee. Sadly, it is true that Marvin, Jr. pushed the situation on just to its violent end.
The other story was the father was beating his wife and Marvin intervened and got shot. Man, there are so many versions of this story, you don't know what to believe.
As happy, uplifting and compulsive as this track is it still makes me want to cry. In the words of Smokey "I gotta dance to keep from cryin". Try not to!
Oh yes!! Mr Hamilton and his Arabians, Baby dont you weep, 'Oh how you used to call my name every minute with a voice sweet as Honey'.....Just love that line, thought it was worthy of Tammi's fantastic voice which still gives me Goosebumps
Well, as far as Northern Soul, dance, late sixties early seventies, this partnership certainly was the pinnacle of duets. There have been others such as Simon & Garfunkel, Ike& Tina Turner and The Everly Brothers,,,all had their own unique sound but for happy music that you can really dance to, Marvin and Tammi take the biscuit. Once again, thanks for posting, , Ive given 5 stars and put in Faves , , thanks
56indy, I can't find any connection between the Elgins & this song. The Elgins disbanded in 1968, eventually becoming the Temptations, so it would have been an early cover.
I am not saying they didn't cover it & I would like to hear it if anyone has it.
I thought one member of the Elgins joined the Temptations, but the crux of the Temptations came from a group called the Primes who sang with the Supremes, then Primettes. Thanks for posting this video, though
The original line up consisted of four members of 'The Distants' & one member of 'The Primes'. Otis Williams, 'Al' Bryant, Melvin Franklin & Eddie Kendricks came from The Distants & Paul Williams from The Primes.
This line up were originally called 'The Elgins' but changed the name when Berry Gordy realised the name was already in use.
The same line up then became forever known as 'The Temptations'.
Oh, I see. I was confused for a moment because I though you were referring to the Elgins with the woman, I believed name Sandra, who sang Darling Baby and the first version of "Heaven Must Have Sent You". They were a group who did not record a lot, ans switched people a lot. And I thought one of those switched ones was asked to join the Temptations or did or something like that. But now I understand. Thanks! Peace and love!
You mean Saundra Edwards who was added to 'The Downbeats' to form 'The Elgins' in 1964. Edwards was replaced by Yvonne Allen before the group disbanded in 1968.
It occured to me that I had not thanked you for your video response to the posting. A very well put together and informative contribution. Best wishes, Doc.
