  • David lee roths version is far better sorry

  • great!

  • for the ones who used to watch pokemon...

    CHARBOK! CHARBOK!

  • I JIZZED IN THE INTRO ITSELF!

  • I love 'em. Mr, Big, the best!

  • I always thought this was cyborg cyborg one more cyborg

  • Billy wrote this back when he was with Talas in Buffalo NY and they were a big regional act then. Me growing up near Pittsburgh , it was a pretty big deal if you had a " Talas " LP. and word of mouth got around about Billy . Helluva bass player and from all accounts , a really nice guy ! I knew Paul a little bit . He was from Delmont , Pa. and he was in a band called " Giant " with Dave Gonzalez and Jeff Coffer and half of the 1st Racer X LP was being played by them .

  • Sheehan is using too much distortion on his bass, listen at the very beginning of the song

  • Best version ever ! Great live video too!

  • ok the ultimate question - VAI or Gilberts version????!!

  • oh this.... video is back now!?

  • i'm sorry but billy has so much more fun playing with paul than steve

  • @SirJamestheIII youre out of your mind

  • it was awesome when billy and paul did a solo together

  • The run at 2:57 is scary... a very few guitarists in the world can run the neck up on a 4 octaves stretch with alternate picking

  • You can't compare this and vai's.

    It's a completly different sound.

But i love both of them!

  • yeah but gilbert is like ways more diverse then steve vai and he doesn't act as gay as vai,and vai does'nt even know what metal is he played like nothing in the form of anything heavy.

  • deep down into the pan is pretty mad though

  • okay,he aint worse either but vai is constantly messin around with his songs, and hate his cd's with singing, the singing on vai it's cd's is really crap.but i have nothin aggainst vai but gilbert plays more and is a technical beast,he does stuff that many just can't.

  • @aryinc Gilbert more diverse then Vai? You are crazy. Vai has done stuff with an orchestra...played with Zappa. Something Gilbert wouldn't be able to pull off in his wildest dreams.

  • @PhilosopherOnWeed

okay so did gilbert,in fact its like vai+ orchestra instead of orchestra+ vai.vai made hard rock and virtuose music and often doesn't finish his ladders, whines around with his pedals while gilbert may be more pentatonic but fools arounds less play jazz blues hard rock metal and the list goes on he plays more various style occasionally and has a tighter and more punching sound.paul is like a alround metal guitarist and vai is just a virtuose like satch.

  • @PhilosopherOnWeed

whos Zappa anyway? a excuse to play sloppy and call it jazz at the time?.let's see vai play any racer x song?.vai is more melodic gilbert is more straight forward,i prefer the shredder gilbert.not that i don't like vai hes a god but hes as much god to me as stach and gilbert is a big influnece for me personal hes a good example for many metal guitarists.

  • @aryinc Alright, you know nothing about music, that's alright. If you call Zappa sloppy you absolutely know nothing. Calling Gilbert more diverse then Vai is bullshit. Gilbert wouldn't be able to pull of a song like Freak Show Excess...let alone write it. And Zappa? He's probably a bit too genius for you to understand.

  • @PhilosopherOnWeed

fuck you man, what are you talking about, freak show this freak show that, does guy do something else then freaks? man those 1000000 per second are as boring on him as they are on jeff loomis as on yngwie malmsteen.i love vai it's playing but serious the guy is to much wah to much pedal to much whammy pretty boring for me.if the guy is a so called god then why are simplistic bands like maiden, mettalica, megadeth making more money.

  • @PhilosopherOnWeed

yeah zappa is to genius, dud depends on what world you come from.for zappa is zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzappa.

i rather listen to deep purple or led zep then some virtuose trying to be that.as for diversity.i listen to any classic rock song from police to mr big to whitesnake to europe to boston eagles, some rave some techno and allot of early metal, flamenco like paco de lucia al di meola list goes on.i'm done with ya.

  • @PhilosopherOnWeed

no playing 100000 the same kind of songs is diverse? gilbert may not be as technical but at least doesn't stutter while imrpvosing watch g3 with vai to see him fail aggainst yngwie with.gilbert asked yngwie to doo a song together, yngwie chickend out or something.Vai is solist without a stable band background more like satch, gilbert did everything from solist satch style to melodic mr big to metal.don't call the guy less diverse then vai.i'm done.

  • @aryinc Making more means nothing. And indeed your done, because you spamming bullshit reactions on me isn't taking you nowhere. You simply know nothing, I already know that. So it's alright, goodbye.

  • @PhilosopherOnWeed

no indeed but you're a load of craptalk and a forsing opinion like bad wether or something.you aren't the brightest here are you?.Because you're responding to nothing they're both diffrent but to me steve plays boring end of it,it's my opionion.Have a nice and ignorant live bye.

  • @aryinc Go learn to play the guitar instead of reacting on someone on youtube, you have a lot to learn, have a nice day.

  • @PhilosopherOnWeed

coming from you, i can actually write songs that people like,so i don't feel bad about anything.i think it's more a problem of you.you don't have to be a virtuose to sound good.i sound good so i feel fine with that.i'm glad i still got a allot to learn, that means that i got a long way to go,you sound like you're already done.at least i'm done with you.

  • hell yea! played it without a whammy bar, makes me want to go learn it now. awesome song and freakin amazing performance!

  • UGH, why did he have to go and ruin one his racer x guitars..

(wait no, he ruined just about all of them.)

  • Racer-X guitar....

  • sucks i never had a chance to see them live, great band

  • why does it say terrifying ? in the description???

  • terrifying = magnifico!

  • Good point. Perhaps the colour pink causes him to lose control of his bowels or something...

  • @Raffael900me He is from mexico, he meant "bad ass"

  • PINK GUITAR!!!!!!

  • tube un orgasmo!

  • Very awesome!!!

  • Well, I can't say this is the perfect version. Eric Martin is no Diamond Dave (although Dave has a gruff voice). Steve Vai also has the better solo along with the guitar/bass duet and the end which is lacking here. Paul Gilbert is as good as Steve Vai but I think Gilbert played it different out of respect to Vai.

  • Actually, it's almost the same as the original version by Talas, Billy's former band.

  • I didn't think Talas' version had impressive lead guitar like Vai's or Gilbert's.

  • The arrangement is similar, not the guitar work.

  • Did Billy Sheehan sing Talas' version?

  • PERFECT! ^^

  • Pink guitar FTW!!

  • gilbert and sheehan rulez!

  • wow is that the ibanez wilshire with f holes?

  • PG is tha man =)

  • @PROGNUT777 did u try type that or the man ?

  • gilbert and sheehan forever

  • Talas tune

  • this version kicks ass...... great !!!

  • what pickups is PG using in that guitar??

  • Looks like his PAF Pro in the bridge and some minibucker in the neck.

  • probably PAF pros or tone zones, those are his favorites, they're both made by Dimarzio

  • Dimarzio's = loads and loads of shredding tone baby !!!!!!!!

  • @NeoGodHand nope, its his guitar from racer x. it had a minibucker in the neck and a super distortion in the bridge.

  • @rockmanX117 By God, that IS his guitar from Racer X. I looked at it the whole time like a custom hot pink PGM...those F-holes tricked me lol. I stand corrected.

  • @NeoGodHand its all good i knew for sure when i saw the racer x sticker on the back (what happend to that guitar??? O_o)

  • @rockmanX117 I know, right? I've always liked that guitar. Maybe he just wanted to honor Ibanez by always playing the PGM's they made for him. Or maybe some kind of accident happened or whatever. Not sure.

  • @NeoGodHand he did that to most of his racer X guitars, including his telesavalas(es)

  • crap! the video screws up on the best part..paul and billy soloing...damn...

  • paul gilberts goin crazy in this haha for mr big

  • The Vai Roth version is much better I like Paul but his solo adds nothing to the song .

  • o yeah!!

  • that isnt david lee roth singing...

you will find that it is Eric Martin so please correct the info lol.

  • Billy Sheehan is too good at bass.

  • you mean Billy Sheehan is amazing! = D

  • Haha! that bass player's awesome!

  • damn!! no one can play such a drums!!!

  • tapping instead of legato intro

  • Yeah, you guys are right: this version is better than the Vai version. Personally, I like wammy abuse-free songs. The dedicated vocalist also helps, though.

  • I like this version better than Vai's. No offence vai is a great guitarist and he is one of my influences

  • I agree I'm a fan of Vai but this version is way better and the vocal is very nice if you ask me....paul gilbert rocks too hard in this vid

  • love them

  • Sheehan and Gilbert are amazing. I think if they had a better singer and drummer that they would have been an even bigger band! (haha, pun intended)

  • mr big is perfect enough for me! haha...

  • what are you talking about? pat is an awesome drummer. just the right amount, no stupid knick knack. thats rock :D

  • :|:| PINNKK!!! :P

  • i thought this was a steve vai song

  • Actually it's a Talas song, Billy's band Before Dave Lee Roth, great track

  • 5*.

  • Does anyone know if there is a DVD for this "Live in San Fransico" concert. I can only find the "Mr. Big Farewell - Live in Japan"

    Thanks

  • There is only the VHS, sadly. I just got it off of Ebay practically brand new though, so try there and maybe you'll get lucky. It's a great performance from Paul and Billy.

  • @rmc24237 I have the original VHS of this concert

  • This video is so fuckin' AWESOME!!

I want to be there with Mr. Big!

  • paul gilbert is awesome!

  • Paul Gilbert has an awesome guitar.

  • Billy Sheehan wrote this song when he was with a band called Talas. I have that one in my collection, as well as Mr. Big and DLR. I also witnessed Billy and Steve Vai play this live. All I could do was drop my jaw! Incredible!

  • very cool*

  • the best version Mr. Big did of this song that I've seen.

  • Best version? no.

    I miss DLR's band

  • so true!

  • Dave was maybe a good front man, but could sing for shit. lol I prefer the better vocals. Just me though. : )

  • that is very but.. its not DAVID LEE ROTH!!!!!!

  • Dave was maybe a good front man, but could sing for shit. lol I prefer the better vocals. Just me though. : )

  • does anyone know the lyric changes that were made to this version of the song? I can't quite make out some of the changes.

  • SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BAD ASS!

  • oh my god!!!!!

    it's so greaaaaaaaaaat!

  • Wow... sheehan and gilbert... i swear i been living under a rock or somethin..

  • Just head back 15 years!! Mr.Big ruled!

  • hey anybody does anyone know any info on Pauls Pink guitar showed here... is it and epi with a ibanez neck... or custom made ibanez... any info would be great

    thanks

  • According to Gilbert's site it's a custom Ibanez with a Body based on his vintage Epiphone Wilshire solid.

  • it does look like a wilshire lol

  • This is great but I still like Vai's version of the song better on DLR's album. Sheehan wrote the song with Talus first and redid it with Roth and Vai and I like Vai's tone a lot better than Gilbert's though Gilbert shreds the hell out of the song.

  • whatever happened to billy sheehan anyway?

  • He plays with Steve Vai now who used to play with David Lee Roth at the same time with Billy.

  • thanks!

  • Last I knew he was quite comfortable touring with Steve Vai.

  • thanks!

  • He also has some solo albums out if I remember correctly.

Oh, and he works with Tony McAlpine a lot.

  • probably right that Michael batio isn't particularly full of emotion, but is paul gilbert?

the thing what is so extreme about michael is that he can even play the mst abnormal licks slow and knows what he is doing.

  • Got Whammy?

  • I like seeing billy and gilbert play together they are great!

  • COOOOOOOOL!!!!!

  • gran tema!

  • yeeeeaaaaahhhh!!!!!!

  • haha, yeah psychedelicbassist is right about sheenan. he's a fuckin beast. paul is amazing as well.

  • lol is sheehan not sheenan :P

  • Awesome, Paul's playing on the good old pink racer-x ibanez

  • batio is fast unemotional bullshit. weird idiot!

PG and Steve Vai are both great. But in this Song I like PG much more, he plays ,...äähm out of his belly , without thinking to much . Sv is too much calculative an thinking about wehathe is plying. I ´ll Pg in October....yeah ....Rock on dudes

  • you guys all talkin bout the guitars but the real star here is sheehan greatest bassist ever

  • Vai got more the original one!!!

  • paul better than vai....... paul rules

  • Paul should tap more in his playing.

  • like he doesnt that enought,he does it lots of time, hes great.

  • amazing video thx for posting

  • lol everytime ive ever said that batio was the best ive gotten thumbs down for it...which means that i can never stop saying batio is god. gilbert is sick tho i mean he taught the bucket!

  • personally i think their both great guitarist bar batio, batios tops on shred but low on musicality hes really repetitive, i think i'd have to pick i would'nt cuz they both play differently, i just enjoy the music.

  • Who do you think is better Pg or Vai for me its PG

  • Top my ass!

  • Vai is a lot more original and creative than Gilbert, but gilbert really lets you know he has technique. Vais a little more subtle about his technique. Overall, Vai is the winner. I also prefer his version of Shyboy from the Astoria

  • notice how satriani and gilbert, both ibanez endorsee's, have a bunch of their signature in a bunch of different colors or have some different body shape from their signature.

  • you can not compare guitarist like vai with gilbert or yngwie with michael angelo you like comparing apple to orange every one has his music style mab shred-yngwie neo classic-gilbert classical basses with heavy metal influence ...peace

  • sure you can. There's just not much point in comparing them :)

  • Paul is on fire during the solos :D

  • When you say gilbert changed vai's licks, Actually sheehan wrote the song and the parts.

    Gilbert is better!

  • More technicaly inclined than vai

  • god damn that was amazing

  • better than vai...

  • That's crazy...just the amount of skill that went into that performance...crazy o.O

  • Are those active pickups that Paul is using?

  • This has nothing on the DLR/Vai version. Paul is a great guitarist, but changed Vai's incredible original licks to generic shred licks, for the loss. :(

  • Holy Fuck!

  • The only reason I called you a prick was because of the format of your statement.. when you make a statement in a condescending fashion over the internet doesn't that sound like hiding behind one's anonymity? Its not like I said I'm going to come and kick your ass or something.

Either way if I had to argue for who I thought the best guitarist was right now it would probably be for Guthrie Govan. Though its interesting to note that Vai considered Danny Gatton to be the best guitar player.

  • you gotta be THAT good to play with a pink guitar or anything else thats gay-looking and Paul is THAT good

  • schmexy as hell

  • I'm thinkin' that this is better than Vai's version. It's alot more exiting

  • Yeah!.

Paul gilbert is a much funnier and interesting guitar player.. world class!

so cool when he and billy sheehan has those cool twin guitar + bass solo fills too!.

    Genious men those 2

  • My first thought was to flame the hell out of that comment. Your saying this is better than Vai's version?

Ok, I will say that there is no issue with you digging Gilbert and prefering this over Steve Vai's playing, hell, I love Paul Gilbert a lot, he is better than I will ever be and has done so many great things.

But better than Vai? I'm having a hard time with that because I think just about everyone will agree, Steve Vai would smoke Paul and just about anyone else.

  • In what way would Steve smoke paul. Are you talking about technically musically or what? Technically somehow I doubt Steve would smoke Paul. I don't know they both have obviously very different styles but from a pure technical standpoint they can probably both play each others stuff fairly easily though paul does do some crazy string skipping and wide interval licks that I've never heard steve do. Of course steve is the master of expression. Either way its not a damn contest.

  • hahaha... xelad1 must think Satriani, Timmons, Van Halen, Hammett, Malmsteen, Friedman, and even Paul Gilbert are all full of it when they say that there is nobody who can keep up with Steve Vai.

Music is a personal thing, you can say you prefer something more than another, but to say something is 'better'? Define that please...

Oh yeah, I would say that musically, Vai slaughters him. Technically? Though Paul is brilliant, my opinion is that Steve is miles ahead of him.

  • I really don't know what you are talking about. Van Halen has stated on multiple ocassions that Holdsworth is his favorite guitarist and Yngwie always says that Vai is too weird for his taste. I also don't know why you're arguing with me since I pretty much said its subjective. But then you went on to say Steve slaughters paul, so is music subjective or not Beausant? The worst part is I love Steve's music but you're being too much of a prick for me not to respond.

  • I'm a prick huh? Ok, sorry... It is always amusing when someone takes a shot at another behind the anonymity of the internet. Whatever floats your boat I guess...

Yes, Eddie has said that Holdsworth is great. He also says the Clapton was huge for him in the early days, more so than others. But when asked who he thinks is at the peak of the game or who makes him sweat, he says that while nobody makes him sweat, Steve Vai is the total package.

  • And Yngwie? He was just at the Dallas International Guitar Show sitting at the Fender booth. We all heard him say that Vai raised the bar, perhaps too high and though Greg Koch wondered aloud about Satch, Yngwie said that Vai was in his words, 'hands down'.

Anyway, yes, we all have different taste, but if you tell me any of them are better than the other, I will respond with my preference. Seem logical?

No, I'm not arguing. I dig chatting with people who love the guitar...

  • They've all really said that.

  • no i don't think so..no way dude! paul gilbert's degree of difficulty when it comes to playing is exceptional! steve vai is great..but Paul is God. Even Vai is intimidated by paul. check out their video in the Ibanez festival.

  • meh, it's not really a competition, like I personally like the tone of vai's guitar better and his solo but both versions have their merit because they are both amazing guitarists.

  • you are correct! rock on!

  • They are all equally good :) You can't say who is better, they are all the best at what they are doing!

    Peace

    Rock On!

  • mr big it seems they came along way , i remember when they used open up 4 rush half the crowed was outside ,they sound good , talented ,but i never got into them
