Absolutely magnificent. The whole enterprise was superbly carried off. It gave me tremendous pleasure. This piece is the very definition of "uplift"! Bravo all
@cwcaplinger: u're right. Above all the diction should be revised. Then a bit tempo too. However this execution is fantastic! Few singers and few instrumenst. I sung it in a concert with an enormous orchestra and an enormous choir. Live it was fantastic, but in the recording u can hear quite only the orchestra 'cause there was too much space btw the choir and people...then the conductor was absolutely incapable and so...we followed the orchestra and the orchestra followed us! It's been funny!!
The chorus has a marvelous tone, but the room they are singing in is very live. I don't think they compensated enough with their diction for the heavy acoustics of that chapel. Also, I think the tempo could have been a few clicks faster to brighten the movement and to inspire more articulation and energy.
I have a recording in which the bass and tenor begin this movement with a duet and the chorus enters not earlier than after 4 minutes. Does anyone know whether there are different versions or something like that? btw, this together with all bach's music is absolutely the highest achievement in human history.
If I'm not mistaken the one starting with the duet is the first and the one performed here the second version.
Just like the opening chorus of BWV 110 this was originally an instrumental movement. How many composers would have had the ability to add a four part chorus to pieces which are already difficult enough by themselves ?
I'm used to the duet version (the bass and tenor sing Peter and John later on, but the words are suitable enough for them to sing in character). You can really tell in that version that the music wasn't originally written for these words, but the result is still thrilling.
Mr. Herreweghe is by far my favourite conductor in this repertoire. Unfortunately he seems to be the only one of the (to my opinion) great Bach conductors who doesn't want to record all of Bach.
Is this available on CD? If yes where can I get it?

I'm 99pct sure this is the "saint Carolus Borromeus church" in Antwerp, Belgium: built in the grandeur of the Baroque era 1615-1621.

I'm a retired oboe player. I would have LOVED to work for this conductor back when I was still performing. His work is simply impeccable.

the lady playing cello is agneet zweestra.
she´s beautiful and plays magnificent,
heard her a few times.
holding the cello between her knees, so that the cello does not touch the floor.
